Hello! :mitch:
I have just read that Microsoft update to Windows 10 will be free for Windows 7 and 8 users.
(The Greek link I read: http://www.naftemporiki.gr/story/904885/aifnidiasmos-apo-ti-microsoft-me-dorean-upgrade-sta-windows-10-kai-olografiko-headset-upologisti )
Is this true? I would appreciate some more information.
From http://blogs.windows.com/bloggingwindows/2015/01/21/the-next-generation-of-windows-windows-10/
"We announced that a free upgrade for Windows 10 will be made available to customers running Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows Phone 8.1 who upgrade in the first year after launch. [* Hardware and software requirements apply. Feature availability may vary by device. Some editions excluded. ]
This is more than a one-time upgrade: once a Windows device is upgraded to Windows 10, we will continue to keep it current for the supported lifetime of the device – at no additional charge."
Ok, thank you! So, we will wait!!
"It is our intent that most of these devices will qualify, but some hardware/software requirements apply and feature availability may vary by device. Devices must be connected to the internet and have Windows Update enabled. ISP fees may apply. Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 Update required. Some editions are excluded: Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise, and Windows RT/RT 8.1. Active Software Assurance customers in volume licensing have the benefit to upgrade to Windows 10 Enterprise outside of this offer. We will be sharing more information and additional offer terms in coming months. "

Windows 10 Installs Automatically On Windows 7 And Windows 8, Microsoft Guarantees Success
Build 9926 of the Windows 10 Technical Preview released last week can be downloaded and installed via Windows Update on Windows 7 and Windows 8... For now this method comes with a caveat: a small (additional) file is needed...

When I booted up this morning, I found that waiting for me.... And... being half asleep...I "reserved" my copy without thinking enough.
When I didn't see anything about it on other forums, I started to worry about being the victim of some "social engineering".
I hope it was legit.

Right clicking on the newly appearing icon gives you these choices:
Get Windows 10
Reserve Your Free upgrade
Go to Windows Update
Get to know Windows 10
If you launch Windows Update, you'll see a nag screen there as well ...

Thanks for the links to 2 good articles Corrine.
First I'll test one netbook with CPU - Z to see if it has the things necessary then I'll look over what will be removed and decide if I'm willing to give that control over Windows updates up.
This pretty much will give you your answers for Windows 10 MS official US site.

If you reserve a upgrade to Windows 10. it will set an icon in the taskbar, you can remove your reservation as well.
I know media center is gone, if I upgrade. I do have three 8.1 pro systems with media center and two 8.1 versions. It's my understanding 8.1 pro would move to Windows 10 pro. Win 7 pro or ultimate will move to Windows 10 pro.
:o (//http://:o) Surprised yesterday also, I had just turned on auto update
I'm considering removing the Win 10 Icon from my tray and getting MS updates when I choose

The Windows 10 icon disappeared in July. Why? Can I get it back?
Hi, Panos.
Had you "reserved" Windows 10?
You may want to take a look at KB 3080351, How to manage Windows 10 notification and upgrade options (http://www.sysnative.com/forums/windows-10-a/15551-kb-3080351-how-manage-windows-10-notification-upgrade-options.html#post117634) as well as this article at The Windows Club: Get Windows 10 app icon is missing or not showing in taskbar (http://www.sysnative.com/forums/redirect-to/?redirect=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thewindowsclub.com%2Fenable-get-windows-10-upgrade-app-icon-taskbar)
Hi, Corrine.
Yes, I made my reservation, when the icon appeared on the task bar. But some days after it disappeared. I thought that this is normal, till I saw the icon on the task bar of my nephew's computer. I search for the update KB3035583 in Control Panel but I didn't find it. I ran the command dism /online /get-packages | findstr 3035583, mentioned in the article above, and I got the Package Identity as appears on the image, with one exception: the numbers at the end (6.1.1.29). I didn't made the other step with the notepad, because I wanted to tell you first.
As far as I can tell, I believe that the 6.1.1.29 is for Windows 7 and 6.3.1.29 is for Windows 8.1.
There is also a fairly long topic with an update provided by Susan Bradley (trusted) and an additional update provided by Barb Bowman (trusted) for non-English language systems. See I want to reserve my free copy of Windows 10, but I don't see - Microsoft Community (http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-win_upgrade/i-want-to-reserve-my-free-copy-of-windows-10-but-i/848b5cce-958b-49ae-a132-a999a883265b)
Ok, so the last thing I have to do is the script with notepad. The fact is that I reserved Windows 10, when the icon first appear. I don't know.
P.S. I started getting angry with my computer, because small things there and there create a strange behavior! I have a leg in the plaster for more than a month now, with everyday temperature almost 40 degrees C (yes, this is our summer), and must have this stupid thing makes its own! I think I will download something ...really bad to completely break it! :Win73:

No Windows 10 for me.
I ran the command from the notepad script. It took 40 minutes till now, with no result.
I have genuine Windows 7, I have Installed KB2952664 and KB3035583, I made my reservation when the icon appeared in the taskbar.
Now, no icon in the taskbar, and nothing about Windows 10.
Be patient.
Not everyone is getting the update even letting computers on for 24 hours.
You might still get it offered to you.
If you don't want to wait, you can do an official download from here. You can choose to download and do a in place upgrade, usb install or DVD installer. This worked just like the WIN 8 original upgrades.
You can choose to wait for the Windows update server, which is guaranteed to be working overtime right now. I was wrong when I stated you had to wait for the update download. The install is a official install by using either method.

This is what I get from Eset (see attachment). But when I go to the system updates, no Upgrade to Windows 10 Home exists. What can be the reason?
What is the exact model of your computer?
Corrine, it's a DELL XPS L502X.
Dell hasn't tested that model yet for compatibility. I suspect the delay is for Intel drivers.

QuoteUsers with hardware that did not have problems got the update sooner and users with hardware that has known compatibility problems with Windows 10 are getting it when they are confident the problems are resolved. Many people who aren’t getting the notification are forcing their computer to 10 when it’s really not ready for it and are thus having problems.

It would have been better if MS had explained why some people get the update immediately while others are still waiting!
BTW, have you installed all of the updates from the screen capture and why are you using ESET to check?

When updates are available, ESET warns me that my perating system is not up to date. When I click for information, I get a screen similar to the screen capture I attached.
I only installed the critical update, not the optionals.
Well, if you're wanting to upgrade to Windows 10, you will need to install the optional updates. In addition, I suggest you check that you have the most recent drivers for your system. Techie found this article that he thought might be helpful for you: Install compatible Windows 8.1 drivers for computers upgrading to Windows 10 | Dell US (http://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/19/SLN297952).
I must install compatible Windows 8.1 drivers, even if my Windows is 7?
What Techie experienced upgrading a bunch of computers to Windows 10 was that he didn't have any issues with drivers written for either Windows 7 or Windows 8. However, if Dell won't officially support your device the only option may be to stay with Windows 7 or attempt upgrading with the Media tool provided by Microsoft.
Have you gone to the Product Support page I linked above to see if your computer has the most recent drivers? http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/product/xps-l502x/drivers
You may also want to read the references on this Dell webpage: Upgrade to Windows 10 | Dell US (http://www.dell.com/support/contents/us/en/19/article/Product-Support/Self-support-Knowledgebase/Windows-Operating-Systems/windows-10-support/upgrade-to-windows-10)
The response by the Dell Rep in the only forum topic I found regarding the L502X seemed rather heavy-handed. It makes me feel as though Dell decided on an age cut-off for Dell devices and decided not to validate so they could push more people to purchasing a new device. support for windows 10 upgrade for XPS 14(L502X) - Windows 10 - Software & Operating Systems - Dell Community (http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/software-os/f/4997/t/19631808)

You may not need to do a install of any compatible drivers. Once Win 10 is installed, if you have a driver say Video card not right, you would then need to install a driver Win 8 compatible or Win 7 if no Win 8 drivers are available.
If you are having trouble getting the reservation or you don't want to wait, you can begin the upgrade manually. Once it is downloaded you can do your upgrade. There really isn't anything magical about how you get the upgrade. The upgrade tool performs the same function regardless if it comes from updates or the media creation tool. If you choose you can begin the upgrade as soon it downloads, and will not have to make a dvd or usb.
It checks for updates and compatibility before you install. You do need to know if you have a 32-bit or 64-bit Win 7 installed. It has to be the same. I would recommend to run the media tool upgrade, if you want Win 10. You may never get a reservation if Dell doesn't certify it. It doesn't mean it will not work.
How to use here.

Thank you, Corrine and techie.
Basically, I don't make all these questions because I want to install Windows 10 now. I just want to know why my computer has a different behavior from my friends'. It's the only computer I know that has not yet received the message of Windows10 upgrade, although I made my reservation. Since then, the Win10 icon disappeared, and no news at all.
At least now I know that the model of my computer is not compatible. But if it is so, why do you suggest the use of Microsoft Tool?
It doesn't men your computer will not run Win 10. It means that Dell isn't going to provide a certification or test your model or provide additional drivers. Has Dell really provided any new support for the computer in last couple of years? When you use the MS tool, it runs through a process after it is downloaded to see if there is any compatibility issues. i.e. drivers, hardware, apps, etc.
The upgrade assistant is in the installation package, it allows you to see if there is a problem, before you commit to actually installing the upgrade.
A quick test wold be the Win 8 compatibility test, they say if you can't run Win 8, you can't run Win 10.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/upgrade-to-windows-8
I was told one of my PC wouldn't run Win 10 because of a video driver, what, it ran Win 10 preview, it was running Win 8.1
I simply used a previous Win 7 driver. As I set here telling you this, I am using a 10 year old laptop running Win 10. It is simply a test machine, 2.13 GHZ single core cpu, 2GB memory and a wddm video card, meets or exceeds the minimum requirement. It runs Win 10 without a problem. Do you think HP is going to certify it?
I have a little more additional knowledge to add. Your microphone may not support Cortana and your camera may work with facial recognition.
Is this your PC and specifications?

Related to Dell's verification process, a friend who is employed by a major company doing computer repair said:
QuoteMy next door neighbor bought a brand new Dell w/W10 a day or two after the release. As I attempted to ensure that the drivers were updated, I noticed that the system was not certified by Dell for W10!

I would say your system reservation was removed because Dell isn't going to certify your system. MS has to move on because so many people are waiting on upgrades. It doesn't mean it can't run Win 10. It means that Dell isn't going to support it. Dell has told you this. Dell has also told you what you may need to do if you choose to upgrade anyway, you may need to upgrade drivers to Win 8 or Win 7 after the install
Your system meets Win 10 minimum system requirements, meets MS COA as genuine, is Win 7 service Pack 1. You have until next July to decide. The method I recommended will give the option to check your system, tell you if there is any hardware issues, software issues before you upgrade if you choose or make a DVD to upgrade later.
It is of no benefit for manufactures to certify any systems that aren't under warranty, or more than a couple years old. It's more beneficial to them to sell you a new one.

Your system well exceeds the minimum requirements. Hp software not needed, I believe net framework version 1.1 is obsolete now. I believe the bluetooth and wireless is controlled by MS software, may not be needed, only thing I would review. I know Intel offers a Win 8.1 driver. Deactivate Itunes before upgrade, then reactivate once completed, so you don't lose one of your authorizations. I believe you are allowed five computers per Itunes account.
Dell finger tapes may not have an upgrade. Finger tapes does offer a free app in the Windows store.
Magic disk is a free ISO burning software, not compatible, but could be replaced with other free ISO programs.
Secure boot isn't a requirement, that must be meet, you don't have a EFI bios. You don't have it now. A feature you never had.
The thing is Win 10 is going to run a compatibility check and give you a list before you commit to a final install. I will be in the upgrade software.
Thank you very much, techie.
Whenever I decide to upgrade, I will start a topic here.
Thank you, again. :)
