Title: A logic problem!
Post by: DR M on April 15, 2015, 02:07:46 PM
Hi, all LzD Friends!

In the picture below there is a problem from a Mathematics Competition in Singapure (SASMO 2015), yesterday. The problem is very challenging to everybody, so, I post it here for you.  :mitch:

By the way, if I want to paste a picture in my post, what can I do?

By the way, if I want to paste a picture in my post, what can I do?

Here are two easy methods:

If it is an image on a website, paste the link in your thread, then highlight all of the link with your mouse and click on the 'insert image' icon underneath the bold face icon at the upper left (above the smilies).  That will add the formatting to display the image.

If it is on your computer, click on the +Attachments underneath the area you are typing in.  That will open up an 'attach' box where you can browse your computer for the file and attach to your thread.

I will try to make it easier:

Could Sheryl tell A that her birthday is in May?
No, because if so, there was a possibility for B to know (19 May, as number 19 appears only once).

Could Sheryl tell A that her birthday is in June?
No, because if so, there was a possibility for B to know (18 June, as number 18 appears only once).

So, her birthday is either in July or August.

After A's response, B knows. So, Sheryl's birthday could not be on 14.7. or 14.8. (14 appears twice, so how he could know then?)

After B's response, A knows. Sheryl's birthday could not be on 15.8. or 17.8. (August appears twice, so how he could know?)

So Sheryl's birthday is on July 16th.

One can only quote from Joseph Wambaugh's "The Choir Boys"...

QuoteLieutenant Treadwell, after his hair started falling out in tufts, earned his way back into Commander Moss' good graces by authoring that portion of the Los Angeles Police Department manual which reads:

Sideburns: Sideburns shall not extend below the bottom of the outer ear opening (the top of the earlobe) and shall end in a clean-shaven horizontal line.
The flare (terminal portion of the sideburn) shall not exceed the width of the main portion of the sideburn by more than one-fourth of the unflared width.

Moustaches: A short and neatly trimmed moustache of natural color may be worn.
Moustaches shall not extend below the vermilion border of the upper lip or the corners of the mouth and may not extend to the side more than one-quarter inch beyond the corners of the mouth.

It took Lieutenant Treadwell thirteen weeks to compose the regulations.

He was toasted and congratulated at a staff meeting. He beamed proudly.

The regulations were perfect. No one could understand them.
