Today's Firefox update to version 38.0 enhanced use of HTML5 Video, as it:

Implemented Encrypted Media Extensions (EME) API to support encrypted HTML5 video/audio playback (Windows Vista or later only); and
Automatically download Adobe Primetime Content Decryption Module (CDM) for DRM playback through EME (Windows Vista or later only)

Having a sandboxed DRM [Digital Rights Management] solution built-in to the browser that plays nicely with the HTML5 standard means users can watch their videos (e.g., from Netflix and similar services) without having to worry about installing plug-ins (e.g., Adobe's Flash and/or Microsoft's Silverlight) and the security issues that come with them.

While advantageous to many "average" users, Mozilla was NOT happy with this particular implementation, because it makes use of proprietary "closed source" coding --- Mozilla would strongly prefer to work only with "open source" solutions.

Users who are UNhappy with using Adobe's CDM (Content Decryption Module) in Firefox have several options:

1) They can either disable or uninstall it:  https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/enable-drm  ; or

2) They can download a separate version of Firefox that comes withOUT Adobe's CDM:  see http://download.cdn.mozilla.net/pub/firefox/releases/38.0/win32-EME-free/  and download your appropriate language version (e.g., en-US for English in the United States).

via siljaline:  How to disable Pocket in Firefox - gHacks Tech News (http://www.ghacks.net/2015/05/14/how-to-disable-pocket-in-firefox/).

I agree completely with the quote below from the above article:

QuoteThere seems to be a disparity between what Mozilla does and what Firefox users want, and the integration of Pocket is just the latest feature that highlights that.

If you elect to go the route of editing about:config, I suggest also toggling browser.pocket.useLocaleList to false

In addition to, you can also deep dive Pocket via Classic Theme Restorer (for those that use the tool)

Also added today:  Clean formatting for articles and blog posts with Reader View

If you're open to an "article" and you see a book icon (in blue or gray) toward the right of the address bar, clicking on it will enter "Reader View" mode (book icon turns red) --- removing much of the surrounding "clutter", making the remaining text "easier" to read...
and if you then click on the (red) book icon, it will toggle back to "normal view".

This pocket feature (which I am not going to explore) sounds very similar to the "Stash" feature of the newer Opera browsers (starting with version 15).  I never explored that feature either but supposedly it allows one to stash web pages to be looked at later.  If this is similar to Pocket then it seems that browsers are definitely copying from one another (of course we know that that is true already) and moving in similar directions.

Comparing Microsoft Edge, I opened the same page and then clicked on the book icon for Reading View (Ctrl+Shift+R), followed by clicking the pencil icon To Make a Web Note.  From there, I had the option to exit or Share it as listed in the right side panel when I clicked the share icon.

Hoping the image capture isn't too large since I have Windows 10 on the desktop which has a 25.5 inch display.  (Edit Note:  It resized for a smaller display)

For what it's worth:

I followed the "updated" information in the gHacks post:   I first customized the FF toolbar, removing the Pocket button from it.   I then applied the about:config adjustment.   Having done both, in this advised order, I still find the "View Pocket List" entry on my Bookmarks menu --- on two systems, Win7x64 and 32-bit Win8.1   Anyone else?

There was an update posted to the gHacks article, ky331.  You'll need to reverse the about:config changes and then remove it from the Bookmarks menu via customize.  Then make the about:config adjustment again.

Corrine,

I did that.   In fact, before ever seeing the gHacks article, I had already gone to the "Hamburger" icon to select Customize, and I dragged the Pocket icon off the toolbar [placing it along with other "unused" icons available in the customized area].

Following that, upon learning about the gHacks trick, I implemented that as well.

But "View Pocket List" is still present in my bookmarks menu (and seemingly locked there).

Okay, I finally figured it out:

When you hit Customize, and drag the Pocket button off FF's toolbar, there are two potential areas to which you can move it:

There are the "primary" tools & features area, on the right-hand side, surrounded by a blue border.   That's where I initially moved the Pocket button, and doing so leaves the "View Pocket List" entry in one's bookmarks.

But there's also the larger Additional Tools and Features area, on the left.   If you move the Pocket button here, then it will remove the "View Pocket List" entry from one's bookmarks.

My 'Pocket' disappeared completely from the Customize page, I eventually removed it from Bookmarks using about:config input 'pocket' > bottom result and removed it from the UI entry manually.

Can't see the entry name now to give it, doesn't show up listed in about:troubleshooting >  Important Modified Preferences either.

OK, found the name = browser.uiCustomization.state

Nor will I but it does allow for the eager Beavers a sneak peek - (all the caveats) are there.  You don't run Firefox as a Browser, last I checked

I was under the impression you had stopped running Firefox completely and had moved over to the Pale Moon platform altogether.

Despite the hoopla - reviews are not good (http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Mozilla-Firefox-for-Windows/1032985422/1) as it would seem many are not pleased with what Mozilla has been serving up and continue to serve up.

If it continues this way - I personally will be looking for a Gecko platform Browser other than Firefox.

Same here, but then again I always keep everything patched and updated whether it is a primary program or not  :rose:

I don't use Firefox nor Internet Explorer but both are on all Win 7 computers and I too keep them fully patched.
I use Palemoon in Windows all the time.
In linux I am using SeaMonkey for the first time. It has more than I need because it is a suite but it reminds me of the way FF used to be so I'm very happy with it.

Those looking for a FF replacement, I suggest giving Palemoon and Seamonkey a look to see if either works for you.

I fully endorse plodr's comments completely.  I run many different browsers in rotation (except for Internet Explorer and Chrome) on a Windows XP computer and keep all of them updated as Corrine, Winchester, and plodr have indicated.  But as far as Gecko-engine browsers are concerned Pale Moon and SeaMonkey win hands down.  I have set SeaMonkey to be my default browser.

It is now amazing that at this point even though SeaMonkey is a full suite of programs as plodr mentioned (like the old Netscape), its download size is now smaller than Firefox!  It did not used to be this way.  Firefox comes in at 39 MB and SeaMonkey is at 31 MB.  Pale Moon at 17 MB comes in at near what Firefox used to be before they went berserk with their accelerated update and revision schedule.  When the browsers are actually running SeaMonkey seems to carry the lowest memory footprint of the 3 which is why it is now my default browser.

So yes like Corrine said I will be updating Firefox when the official release appears.  I will not be an "eager beaver!"  (Smile)

Noted and thanks for this. You live by Mozilla's early CDN (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Content_delivery_network) you die by it as well and get shamed by your peers for having announced it. Corrine will know what I mean by this.
