Title: Cisco to purchase OpenDNS
Post by: ky331 on June 30, 2015, 01:59:33 PM
Today, Cisco announced its intent to acquire OpenDNS, a privately held security company based in San Francisco. OpenDNS provides advanced threat protection for any device, anywhere, anytime. The acquisition will boost Cisco's Security Everywhere approach by adding broad visibility and threat intelligence from the OpenDNS cloud delivered platform.

I don't know if I like that. I typically configure my routers to use OpenDNS (https://store.opendns.com/setup/?__utma=247635969.2093386621.1435334534.1435334534.1435673912.2&__utmb=247635969.3.10.1435673912&__utmc=247635969&__utmx=-&__utmz=247635969.1435334534.1.1.utmcsr=r.duckduckgo.com%7Cutmccn=(referral)%7Cutmcmd=referral%7Cutmcct=/l/&__utmv=-&__utmk=116947717#/) instead of those provided by my IPS. If Cisco leaves it alone, all will be good. But I fear now Cisco will dink with OpenDNS and ruin it. :(

FAQ about the buyout:
https://www.opendns.com/cisco-opendns/

Among other things, it says:  The free service will continue to operate. It's part of who we are, and Cisco loves who we are. We wouldn't have entered into this agreement if we believed our free service would be in jeopardy. On contrary, Cisco's commitment back to you is to maintain OpenDNS's DNS services exactly as it is today. In their words: "This level of service for all users is a priority."

Well, that is good news. I guess now it is wait and see. Thanks.
