Some consumers trying to upgrade their computers to Windows 10 have run into a bug that is rendering their machines inoperative.
Instead of being able to use Microsoft's new operating system, they get an error that says their computer has a "missing operating system." Some also said their drives reported having nothing on them after the attempted upgrade...
Several of those who experienced the bug reported using Asus computers. Many also reported having laptops that use flash, or solid-state (SSD) drives.

I had one Acer laptop, that failed. It was a Win 7 home. It never completed Win 10, but left Win 7 where it couldn't boot completely up. It booted to a black screen and no desktops. I recovered it, ran again and it installed. It again failed after it was installed and updates ran. The system became non-responsive. This happened twice. I reset the PC and it ran fine as a clean install. I believe the problems lie in the empowering software Acer used before Win 8.
Thanks for the note about the Acer notebook techie. The only Windows 7 machine that I have is my mother's old Acer Aspire 5538 notebook. I was going to hold off updating for a while anyway. But now I am even more leary. This appears to be something that I will need to pay attention to.

I would uninstall any 3rd party antivirus/firewalls and the e software. It should be fine after that. Backup personal files. If it does fail "alt F10" will put yo intou the the factory software. It's always there as long as don't delete the recovery partition.
P.S. It runs smoother and faster without the e software.

Many Acer systems including some, not all Win 7 systems came with Acer Empowering Technology Framework. It usually included the ability to create recovery disk or a current image, power management software, storage encryption software, and more or less. If it is installed on your system it should be in your start under Acer. The alt F10 option is when you first boot-up a partition for most Acer systems to enter the recovery partition. It's a framework software, which I believe create the problems.

Thanks for the heads up :thumbsup:. Unfortunately I have an Acer and may have to do a bit of homework first.
I did replicate this on two different occasions. Acer support and the systems there supporting for Win 10 upgrade doesn't include the ones with the e software, as far as I can tell. It's more of just a safeguard to remove it before an update. It was a fairly decent, not great tech package to help the average user maintain a decent backup of there system and create recovery disks.
