What free tools are available to supply information about a URL. I would like to investigate the source of URL's that come with junk.
Hello ChuckRJr,
There is several oneline tools available. Try out one of those:
https://safeweb.norton.com/ (https://safeweb.norton.com/)
https://global.sitesafety.trendmicro.com/ (https://global.sitesafety.trendmicro.com/)
https://www.virustotal.com/en/ (https://www.virustotal.com/en/)
https://www.f-secure.com/en_US/web/home_us/search (https://www.f-secure.com/en_US/web/home_us/search)
Also, Google's Safe Browsing Site Status:
https://www.google.com/safebrowsing/diagnostic?site=URL (replace URL with the real URL of the site you're investigating, or use https://www.google.com/transparencyreport/safebrowsing/diagnostic/)
and the hpHosts database:
https://hosts-file.net/?s=Browse (use the Find/Search box, site classification codes are detailed at https://hosts-file.net/?s=classifications).
Better to not rely on a single source, some databases can be slow to update (I've seen some databases where checks haven't been done for 6+ months on many sites, also sites that have been clean for over a year still flagged as malicious, the worst culprit was McAfee's free online checker, SiteAdvisor, I don't know if it still exists in an online format. Norton can also be slow to clear false positives and reclassify cleaned up sites).
Depends what you need it for. If you're a forum administrator screening new members, some of these may be useful:
