Late at night on the computer an update schedule prompt came up. So I okay'd and went to bed. Still updating in the morning so had lunch, took a stray cat to Humane Society, cleaned out some junk and took it to Value Village. About 7 pm still updating , I need my computer so I took a chance and turned it off and back on again. still updating.This was all taking place at 95%. Did it again on and off and it put back old window copy thank goodness.
should I have let it run, it was at 95% for hours and hours? I assumed something was wrong. Should I have let it keep going for more hours, I was at about 22 hours. It is prompting gain for an update.
When it works it's great, when fails or hangs, it's no fun. I would look at these recommendations and see if it may resolve the issue.
It could be a driver problem, a corrupted update download, etc.

It might also help to indicate which KB the system is getting stuck on. Also, check Settings > Windows Update > View installed update history for the KB that is getting stuck and any errors indicated.
Downloaded the troubleshooter, it is at the stage of deleting the update and redownloading it, so I will try that first I guess. Fingers crossed. It also made some changes, so next step is to try the update again.

Restarting now.
I downloaded and used the troubleshooter and tried again. Still hangs at 95%. I will have to figure out how to turn off updates until I sort this thing out. It takes a few on and offs for it to finally revert to previous version of Windows 10, otherwise it it locked into the update and the locked in at 95% and is just a brick.
Problem is it takes a few hours because it is a major update to reach 95% and then hangs.

If possible do as Corrine said provide the KB number that is failing. Check for error codes. Is it an update or new version upgrade? I have had luck unhooking any printers, usb devices, etc. and the updates work. If you are running a third party anti-virus turn it off during the update process.
If you know the exact KB file, do a search online for the MS catalog standalone update.
You can't turn off Windows Updates on the Home version.
@techie: From the "restart" image Orillai3 posted, it is hanging installing the Creators Update (1703). Seems we're both on the same track as well suggesting disconnecting peripherals and security programs. :)
From the 85% point, the update is performing a lot of important tasks such as archiving old Windows installation, moving around applications and personal files. When prompted for the restart, if you are connected to the internet, disconnect from it by unplugging your wired and wireless connections. In addition, if you have non-essential external devices (printer, scanner, etc.) connected to your computer during installation, these can interfere with the setup engine and prevent the installation.
There have been issues getting the Troubleshooter to solve problems with updates. I suggest using running DISM and follow that with System File Checker.
Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM):
- Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
- When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
- Enter the command below and press on Enter;
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Let the scan run until the end (100%). Depending on your system, it can take some time.
System File Checker (SFC):
As with DISM, open an elevated Command Prompt, entering the following command:
sfc /scannow and wait for it to finish (~15 minutes).
It is called "Feature update to Windows 10, version 1703". There is no KB number.
You can see the name of the update waiting in the second picture in previous post above.
Only thing connected is an SD card in the slot, can't remember if it was set up as Ready Boost I think it was, removed it now.

Only odd thing was a new memory error message never had before popping up about not being able to write on a section, it appears and disappears at some point. Can't see this as a problem (?).
There is a workaround for stopping Windows automatic update is to select metered connection. Apparently you lie to say you are on a metered connection and will wait for your selection to download or wait until it gets to another connection.
I cannot disconnect the wired connection because it does not work anymore, I have dropped this computer several times, and the USB and wired internet connector do not work on that corner. I use wireless, which I can easily disconnect with the Fn and F3 keys, that turns wireless off.
If the update can't write to a section, then, yes, it could be a problem. Have you run DISM and SFC yet?
Sorry, I was looking at updates, not upgrades, even though there now installed like an update.
One other option is you can do a direct download and update now, or choose the second option Create Windows 10 installation media.

been tied up today, will be running this evening. Damn update keeps prompting me for a restart, not much point. How can I delete the uploaded download, it will start tonight if I ignore it and I will be asleep.

If you have a restore point you can go back and it will eliminate the upgrade, in the cache. The problem is it will also remove any security updates installed after the restore point.
In search type: System
In popup Left Click: System Protection
In popup Left Click: System Restore
Pick a previous point say a week ago or when the last update was applied.

I am not sure what Windows you have, but I do not have a search box from Start. That Cortana search does not give me an administrator command prompt either. To get one I have to go Start> Windows System> [right click] Command Prompt>
More> Run as Admistrator
I had set the internet to a metered connection so it would not automatically download. I found these instructions to delete the pending update. Went there and folder is empty, probably from my using the repair program from Microsoft. I have not had any nag screens so hopefully it is gone for now. Since it is a feature update, I assume it does not contain security patches.
" To do so, follow these instructions: Go to This PC and open the partition you have your Windows installed on (it's usually C:) Go to Windows folder. In Widows folder, find folder named Softwaredistribution and open it. Open sub-folder Download and delete everything from it (you might need an administrator permission)"
At this point you have stopped the upgrade from running. I never said from start, do a search. Cortana is search just simply applied.
If you right click start, then go to system, it is system settings. I was sending you to the system control panel which is a different screen and options.
As to upgrading to Version 1703, you'll want to do that at some point since the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, version 1607, will stop getting security and reliability updates sometime in the first quarter of 2018.
I gave up on this junky upgrade that refuses to install. I got a refurbished windows 10 with 8 GB of RAM computer in the box and might wipe the old one and try from a factory install, there seems to be an option of doing this from settings. I did the option of installing windows 10 again and keeping files, but it has stalled again at 95%. What is so frustrating it takes 5 hours to reach 95% then hangs, so a half day without a computer each time I try. The computer also has reached the point also where it is frustratingly slooooow. I think they design computers, not to wear out, but to get so slow people get a new computer. I just seem to be wasting my time with this problem, there is no way to troubleshoot it.
I am sitting here watching it again stuck at 95%, I would take it out back and douse with gasoline, or use a sledge to take out my frustrations, but feel there must be a way of getting some usefull life out of it, maybe revert to a Linux install, I always wanted to try that.
