Title: Printer has stopped working after last windows update
Post by: pastywhitegurl on May 17, 2018, 02:22:58 AM
My computer is on a home network, and once PWGuy's computer updated, our connected printer stopped working.

It sends the document to the print queue, and the printer makes a response noise, but then does not go on to print the document.

I thought maybe it would be solved when I updated my computer, but the problem persists.

My printer is a Xerox WorkCentre 3215.

I also got a notice after the update installed  that our home group was deleted.  I was able to set up a sharing folder, but I will probably need help to get his machine to share the printer again.
I ran the troubleshooter, and again as administrator,  but it said it could not identify any problems.
Hoping it is something simple that I'm missing.  Computer info in my signature has been updated today.  Thanks for any help.

So no computer on your network can print?

What I find odd is you said the printer acts like it is going to start printing, then nothing happens.

Do the copier work?

Note this is a network printer. It does not require "sharing". The printer connects to your wireless network, then any computer on your network should be able to print to it.

Just tried the copier and it does work.
I sent another job to the printer, and this time it didn't respond at all.
A pop up declares it is "now printing", the print queue report says "printing", but nothing happens beyond that.

I sent a second job, and instead of status being "printing" it is just blank.

Printer info:
Xerox PCL6 Class driver V1.1

I did a driver check and Windows says its the best version for my set up.  I've asked DH to send a job via his computer. I'll report back the results when he does.

PWGuy's print job attempt did not work.
Print queue says job was sent from the home network.Print status is blank.

Yes, Homegroup was removed in the April Update, Build 1803.  Neither hardware nor networking are my area of specialization but because of the change with the removal of Homegroup, I searched for information on network sharing and located this:  Homegroup removed! How to get network sharing work with Windows 10 - Microsoft Community (https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-files/homegroup-removed-how-to-get-network-sharing-work/01277332-2916-4a68-853a-116696b20743).  In particular, did you turn on "file and print sharing" in Step 2?

In addition, when searching for information about the Xerox WorkCentre 3215 printer, I note in the description that it has wi-fi.  Are you able to connect to the printer via wi-fi or did I read too much into the brief description I read?

Is the printer hard wired to the router, or have you been connecting wirelessly?

Have you turned the printer on/off so it can re-initialize?

You should be able to 'see' the printer by typing its IP address into your browser.  You can get that by looking at the router, and seeing where the printer resides.  That may/should show some options related to networking, diagnostics, etc.

The printer is connected to my computer which is hard-wired to the router.  PWGuys is hardwired to the router as well.  We could not get my computer to work wirelessly, and his was slower on wireless, so he wired up.

It appears that some of the sharing settings were turned off.
So now that is fixed and printer is working as normal again for both network computers.  I'm not sure why the printer wouldn't print for me, but once I turned it off and back on again after changing the settings, it started printing.

Good thing, because that document Corrine linked me to was  super confusing.

I agree the post I linked to is involved but there will be a lot of people who used Homegroup who don't know how to set up Network sharing.

Glad you solved the problem and can both print again! (https://www.sysnative.com/forums/images/smilies/sysnative2_PROD/thumbsup2.gif)

Well that shows how clueless I am. Haha!  I thought homegroup and network sharing was the same thing.
Thanks so much all for the help troubleshooting.   I really did try to figure it out myself but failed. I'm so glad I can come here and ask the experts. :)

You really should change this and not use sharing. It would be better to connect the printer to your router. In that way, you don't need sharing which can be less secure.

The advantage to using a networked printer instead of a shared printer are many.

1. The printer can be physically located in a central location - anywhere there is a Ethernet connection or wireless reception.
2. The printer does not need to be tethered to any computer, or taking up some of your precious desk space.
3. Anyone can print without a "host" computer being up and running.
4. No sharing of the host computer's resources are required.

Our arrangement works fine for us with the printer on my very large desk and my computer is always on because our landline depends on it. We are the only 2 computers in the house,  and are behind a password protected router.

I'm not sure how we are vulnerable, but I will pass this info on to PWGuy and see if he wants to make this change.

In terms of security, your vulnerabilities because you are sharing are very low. So then it becomes just a matter of convenience. With the computer tethered to your computer, then your computer must be up and running for him to print. If never a problem, then okay.

I see. Thanks so much for the further explanation. :)
