Found this interesting. Scotty (WinPatrol) warned me that the RTF file association was changed from Word to WordPad.
Wild guess: stop malware in RTF files from working in Word by simply not having them open in Word by default?
Hmmm ... I uninstalled WP a few months back ... went and looked at my default setting, and found no change. Odd ...
No changes here with Office 2016 on either my laptop (Windows 10, 1803) or desktop (Windows 10, Build 17713).

Same here. Both showing rich text format (.rtf) files are associated with Word.
And I fired up WordPad and opened a Word document (.docx) to see if WordPad would yell at me, or change the default association without warning. All it did was tell me, "WordPad does not support all of the features of this document's format. Some content might be missing or displayed improperly".
It didn't change anything and Scotty is still snoring in the corner.
Just looking over the list of associations, none are set to WordPad.
