I noticed some PM notifications from you and Roger in my email a few moments ago, Josh, but when I try to go to Scot's I'm getting a weird error page:
An error occurred (500 Error)
We're sorry, but a temporary technical error has occurred which means we cannot display this site right now.
Access denied for user 'phineas_forums'@'localhost' to database 'phineas_forums'
You can try again by clicking the button below, or try again later.
Can you or Corrine access it?
I got the same error when I refreshed the page. As you'll see, I sent Scot an email with a screen copy, cc'ing the both of you.
Yes, saw your email earlier. My guess is that Scot was doing some of the "house-cleaning" he mentioned in his last post at SNLF and possibly made a boo-boo. Ca-ca happens. :(
Yeah, I figured it was the database issue that he talked about.
And who is this "Phineas" fellow? ;)
I've wondered the same thing.
Since Scot's is still down, we've decided to open the Linux forums here (at least for the time being). Note that none of us know what the future holds for Scot's Newsletter forums since Scot just made the announcement of it being available yesterday.
All's well. Let 'er rip, Corrine.
Hi all! Trouble at Scot's prompted me to sign up here. Thankfully I have never had Windows malware problems so will be almost exclusively reading the Linux section. Let's hope it goes well.
> I have never had Windows malware problems...
Me, neither, actually. I was a tad bit sharper than the average computer user back in my Windows days, so that was probably to my advantage. Oh, never had a virus infection, either. How 'bout that?

Feel free to populate this new area with some goodies, Ratus Solarus. Start your Debian Updates thread in Bruno's Classroom, and I'll pin it there for you. I would start a Slackware Updates thread, but they're so far and few between, it would be quite boring. ;)
I'm off...

Probably his pick for database user. You usually manipulate the database using a set database user.

Hey Sunrat, welcome

That makes sense.
In the meantime, it wouldn't hurt if you have contact information for other SNF Linux users to let them know that you're "meeting" here while Scot's is down. Even if they don't wish to register, they'll be able to see as guests any distro updates that are posted.
Besides amenditman and eric, I do not have others contact info.
I let Cluttermagnet know on my private (Cabin In the Woods) forum about what was going on and mentioned that he should come here and register.
Also, I have a few folks' emails from SNLF. I just sent them an email about what's going on and told them about Landzdown. Hopefully, some (all) will show up here. Unfortunately, I expect a lot of bounce-backs. People don't seem to use the same email addresses for long periods of time, like I do. :(
We'll see...
Hello
I followed you all here.
It's shame SNF is down, and I hope he can save it. There are a lot of treasures in that database.
The forum is back up and Eric was correct about the cause of the problem!
Howdy, Amenditman!
And YAY! SNLF back up! :)

Which reminds me, I must mail Eric because my email provider has had a houseclean so my mail has changed a wee bit.
I do know of Corrine and I'm pleased she has arranged for Bruno's ATL to take up residence. Thank you.
Now to read the rules again....
Stay safe, Ian
Well I made it over here. I am thankful Corinne set us up here. :)
You're both welcome.
Actually, I can't take full credit -- Eric suggested setting it up here as a "just in case" due to Scot's Announcement. It was barely started and kept it private until yesterday when Scot's was down.
I hope you all feel free to contribute news, updates, tips and tricks you think will be helpful to others, particularly since LzD has been a "Windows" forum and, throughout the years, I've referred people with Linux questions to Scot's.
Hi, folks... good to see you here. Landzdown is quite an interesting forum outside of our little area here. Don't be afraid to explore, particularly you folks who have Windows on your systems at home or work. Lots of good info here!
Ian, I saw your post regarding your email over at the Cabin. :)
Hi, All-
I just registered on the Lanzdown site. Thanks so much for creating this alternative place.
I will see what pages on Scot's I might want to preserve. Lots of stuff, actually. Hope it is
still there and fetchable. Scots was a watering hole for me, a little oasis on the big,
sometimes insane internet. That aspect is *sorely* missed! Kudos to Scot for an
amazing 19 year run. You done good, Guy...
Clutter
Feel free to create a "Funniest thing I saw . . ." in the Jokes forum or some other favorite topic in the Lounge here.
Uploading an avatar- how to do it? Is this accomplished through the Profile page
with the button at the bottom "Change Profile"? I can see no other way to do this.
Thanks!
Clutter
P.S. Never mind, I found it...
YAY! Good to see you here, Clutter! :)
Well, this oldie arrived here too ;D Good to see ya all ...
You're an oldie that I'm very glad to see here! Hope all is well with you and yours, Striker! :)
Thanks Eric.
Good deal. I have switched emails quite a few times but I still have access to about 99% of them and check them. I did stop using my gmail accounts though because I was tired of google cancelling popular projects (dropping my almost 90k member G+ community was the last straw).
I also noted the error message over at BATL, but it was resolved in a day or two. Got a message from Raymac and here I am, reporting for duty! :-P
P.S. I note the irony of SBs signature regarding "newbies", yet see that I am classified as such on this forum. Hehehe! And as I went to edit my prior post and add this commentary, there doesn't seem to be ability to edit that post? Or am I overlooking this feature, perhaps in a less obvious place? ::)
@HJ you won't be a newbie long if you continue posting. As far as editing goes you do get a little time to modify your posts when you first make them but that capability rapidly disappears. :)
Yeah... you won't be a "newbie" for long here, HJ. About 5 or so posts and you'll bump to the next level, I think.
About the time-limited editing capabilities... I didn't realize it was set like that here. As a Mod, I have no limits on Modifying posts. I'm not sure how long you have to Edit/Modify. Maybe one of you can experiment with a test posting to see.
I've increased the "Maximum time after posting to allow edit" from 5 minutes to 10 minutes. We've had the edit time so short due to the number of malware removal topics we had been getting. With such topics having decreased, we'll see how the 10-minute limit works.

Thanks Corrine! We're off to a really good start here! Perhaps I'm a little spoiled by the attentiveness at the BATL forum, but it's nice to know that a moderator is present and available to consider issues. On that note, I've noticed that after posting, the forum kicks me from the thread back to the "mother folder" of thread topics. Is there a way to stay within the thread after posting, and view the additional posts made after the post I'm replying to?
For instance, a thread with 10 responses....I reply to post #3, then get kicked to the main folder. Then I have to click the thread again in order to see responses #4-#11 (with #11 being my new post). Is there a setting in my preferences to reply to post #3, but stay within the thread to see the remaining posts? I'm not seeing any way to change that. Perhaps I'm just not looking in the right place?
> Is there a way to stay within the thread after posting, and view the additional posts made after the post I'm replying to?
Yes, it's in your Profile Settings...
Profile -> Modify Profile -> Look and Layout -> check the box for: "Return to topics after posting by default"
Oh, and FAQ's and How-Tos for Simple Machines Forum can be found HERE (https://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Category:As_a_regular_user).
Thanks, Eric!
One item I didn't see in that Wiki page is setting the time zone so your post time matches
Go to your Profile and under "Modifiy Profile", select "Look and Layout" from the drop-down options. Time zone is under "Time Offset".
There are two ways to do it but I used the following instead of "auto detect" (which I don't even recall if it works): "Using Number of hours to +/- to make displayed time equal to your local time", look at the "Current forum time: December 02, 2021, 04:17:23 PM" and make the appropriate change. I have the setting as -3 since it is 1:17 PM here.

Found it! Fixed it! Thanks VT!
You're welcome. :)
