Title: Multiple Copies Of Stored Photos
Post by: mare_wbpa on August 18, 2025, 02:39:25 PM
Hi, I hope I'm posting this question in the correct forum. Here goes. My computer is an HP, approximately 1 and 1/2 years old. it has a 500 GB hard drive 8 GB RAM, Intel i3 processor. When I got this machine I transferred the contents of my old computer using a Clickfree external hard drive. Everything seemed to go well and for the most part I'm satisfied with the performance of this computer. My issue is, this computer had a file called Gallery preinstalled and all of the large number of my photos landed in the Gallery. Many of the photos had multiple copies when I inspected the file. I started to delete the duplicates. it seems that despite deleting the duplicates, the next time that I start my computer and open the Gallery, the duplicates have returned plus more copies than before I deleted them. Some of my photos have as many as 10 copies. not every photo has duplicates. What an I doing wrong, and how do I fix it?

I went to the site using the link you provided, The first advice was to right click on a blank area of gallery, then click on "Group By". When I right clicked on a blank area a window comes up with a "Group By" option, but it isn't highlighted. The other options listed in the instructions like Photo Stream and Sky Drive don't seem to apply to my issue. I have never seen either of these files or programs on my computer. Any other help that you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Mare,

Can you take a photo of what you get when you open the folder Gallery? Try to catch the whole screen when you take the photo.

After that, attach it in your next reply.

To do that, click on the Preview button, and then on Click or drag files here to attach them.

Do you mean that I should take a picture of the screen with my phone camera?

That link results in an error message.  You could try using the Snipping Tool.

Yes, either take a photo with your phone or using the Snipping Tool, as Corrine suggested. What is more convenient to you. But we need to catch the whole screen, when you open the Gallery folder.

I have no idea what the snipping tool is, or how to use it. Sorry, my computer skills are limited.

When I highlighted the link I sent, then right clicked it, I clicked on Open In New Window, the photo I took of the screen comes up.

And there is always the photo option.

Using the snipping tool I was able to get a screen shot, but can't seem to get the screen shot pasted here in the post.

A thumbnail of the screenshot is in the tray at the bottom of the screen, but as soon as I put the cursor over it to drag it to this window it explodes to original size and the whole forum page disappears leaving no where to drag the screen shot. I'm obviously doing something wrong between getting the screenshot then being able to post it into the post window. Sorry for the ineptitude.

Since it's difficult for you to attach the image, leave it for now.

Open the Gallery folder and spot a photo which is listed more than once. Right click on it and select properties. What do you see in the Location area?

I right clicked on one of the photos which has about 8 copies in the Gallery. A menu appears but properties isn't one of the options in the list. I clicked on several of the copies to be sure that all the menus didn't have a properties option.

Right click on the same photo with the so many instances and choose Show more options. Then, you will see Properties. Choose Properties and let us know what is shown in the Location area.

I went to the Gallery again, picked a photo with multiple instances, right clicked, a menu opened, there isn't a show more options in the list either. When I took the screenshot, and I did it several times, it said that it was copied to the clipboard. Doesn't that mean that when I'm in the post window and right click, paste comes up, I click paste and shouldn't the screenshot appear, since it was copied to the clipboard. I've just about stood on my head to get the screen shot into this post window, no matter what I do, it doesn't happen. I've been following all of the instructions very carefully, nothing is happening that's supposed to.

Don't know how it happened, but a thumbnail of the screenshot appeared in my previous post. I wish I knew how I did it so that I could do it again if necessary.

The screenshot you provided doesn't tell me anything. I had asked you to take the whole screen of the computer, including the sidebar and the taskbar, to confirm that we are talking about the Gallery folder shown in the File Explorer.

Also, I can think/do much, without knowing what you get when right clicking an image. You have Windows 11, so you should have Show more options and the Properties options.

I'll try to get a better screenshot, with no guarantee that I will be able to post it again. I'm telling you again, that when I right click on one of the photos which has many copies, there is properties or show more options in the menu that appears after I rt click. I will also try that again.

That is a wonderful video. Using the instructions at the beginning, I was able to get a beautiful screenshot of the entire screen. However, her next instruction is to press (ctr v) to paste the screenshot into any any app. When I come here and go to the post box and press ctrl v, all I get is a v. No screen shot. I must have tried it at least 5 times. she says that the screenshot is copied to my clipboard and in my pictures folder. I can't find the clipboard or my pictures folder when I'm in the forum.

mare_wbpa,

The instructions to attach the screenshot are here: https://www.landzdown.com/index.php?msg=209097

As you can see, there is no reference to copy/paste or ctrl+v tasks.

You will be able to attach the screenshots, if you just follow the instructions.

I have no explanation, but just before I came to here, I opened the Gallery and found that about 95% of the photos had just 1 copy of each. As far as I know, all I have done is take screen shots and rt click on a few to find  properties or show more options listed in the menus. I checked again, there is no properties or show more options listed in the menus. As of now I happily don't have a problem, but the way it's been going, that doesn't mean that I won't be back to square one tomorrow. I might be back sooner than you want to see me. I thank everyone who in any way attempted to help me with my limited computer skills. I'm 79 and feel fortunate to be able to turn this machine on and find my way here. I know that I always find friendly people here, who go over and above to help. Thanks again.

Hi, Mare_wbpa.

Actually, we want you to be here more often. It's our pleasure to assist you. :)

What I suspect (and tried to confirm it with my instructions to you) is that Gallery is just the folder in Windows 11 that shows, let's say, a virtual catalogue of all the images in the computer. The real location of the images is not the Gallery folder, but the Pictures folder, or Documents folder etc. So, if that is the case, I recommend you not to view/manage your photos from the Gallery folder, as it's not their real/actual location.

If you do try my instructions above (as I said before, no copy/paste task) and attach any screenshot (either the complete screen with the Gallery folder shown or what you get when you right click a photo), it will be very helpful for us to determine what is really happening and help you.

I never attach, download, copy or paste anything into Gallery. I just happened onto the file or folder or whatever it's called sometime after I got the computer. If I download or save anything from another source, it always goes into an appropriately named folder. Thank you for the invitation for the future if I  need you. You're my safety net.

I wish that I could have mastered getting a screenshot into this message box. I've tried since I sent the thank you post. It drives me crazy when something I try fails. I enjoy learning new tasks.

I tried your latest suggestion and it didn't work. I take the screenshot as per instructions. I get a message that it was copied to the clipboard. The clipboard is in the tray under the screen. As soon as I place the cursor over it, the screenshot disappears. I googled how to take a screenshot and the instructions say to press ctrl+V after taking the screenshot to place it where I want it, and that didn't work either. Obviously there is a way to do it, because I accidentally got one into a previous post, but I don't know how it happened. Unfortunately I didn't take a shot of the entire screen. At least I learned how to take a shot of the entire screen, so I did learn something. Just can't get to post it deliberately.

Mare,

You must save the screenshot on your Desktop before you try to drag it in your reply.

If you used the snip tool, you must go and click on the Save icon and save the screenshot taken on to the Desktop.

Then, just follow my instructions in my previous post.

And something else:

As I explained above a couple of times, the attachment of the pictures here doesn't include a copy/paste task.

So, after you save the screenshot, you must click on the Reply button and then click on the Click or drag files here to attach them button.

Sorry, I thought that we had all given up on my issue. It's not a big deal to me, unless you think that it is. I see  that there are a couple more posts about the gallery thing. I haven't thought about it in a while, so, I have to review and get up to speed again. It's going to take me a while to catch up. I'll go over things and get back to you.I appreciate your help.
