Title: PC idles, no connection on internet
Post by: ramblinrose on April 17, 2006, 08:55:16 PM
Hello, after solving my pc problems was caused by microsoft updates (many thanks to spydie). Now I noticed something different...when I am not using pc, I leave it on and all I have to do is move my mouse, it came to life but I cannot connect on internet. I have to restart pc and no problem getting on internet. I even disconnect modem that was hooked up to my pc for internet. It didn't seem to help. Before all that problems I had, my pc was not like that at all. I can leave it on all day and nite, even few days, no problem getting on internet! So I was wondering what was the problem now? I have zone alarm(free) and avast (free). I also use wireless router for my laptop. Everything work before I had problems with new mircosoft updates. So can anyone help me out? I know I shouldn't have to worry, all I have to do is restart but I like convenient not having to restart anytime I want to use pc when I leaves pc on.Sometimes I do get *page cannot displayed* also...I have windows xp home edition sp2 I used classic view...Thanks! hugs, Rose

i'm on linux now so can't give a whole bunch of ideas?

but have you looked in the power management settings ( stanby, hybernate)

and do you use OE for e-mail and have it set to check every??? min?????  ( does it come out of hybernation to do that)

and in IE what is your connection settings? there is one to go online if not online ( no IE on linux ;-)

ok, i woke up the XP beast ;-)

ie/tools/internet options/connections

what do you have? lan settings?

control pannel/power options
check your settings and do you have "hibernate" enabled or not?

and a question, what is your standby time ( power)
and in OE to check mail how long? (oe/options/general

Hi mitch!
Connections-lan settings is automactically detect settings

Hibernate is enable but I don't use it. Should I uncheck it?

Standby power is never

OE -I set at 10 mins.

I hope I got your questions right...

I removed Generic Host Process from zone alarm. Then I rebooted and came up asking me if I want to allow Generic Host Process and I clicked allow...it seems to be ok now. I left it on all day and came back to see if my pc is still connected to internet... no problem now. hugs, Rose  :rose:

:x Now that didn't help...tomorrow I told hubby to call our ISP and have someone come to our house to check on phone line or something....I am tired of having restart just to get on internet.... :x I have to be on pc to stay connected but if I go away maybe 5 mins, I lose connection...grrrr I don't know what was the problem..I didn't make no changes only updates. I didn't have that problem before updates started whole thing. Anyone got suggestions???? Thanks...Rose

have a look at your zone alarm
look to see what you have allowed and what you have blocked?

not a expert on protocal but do know when you turn on your computer you "announce" to the world you are online.

and you might be blocking something from your isp like a "ping" they send out every so often?

if i remember za keeps a log, and look around the time you were locked out and see what traffic and ip was blocked ;-)
and a hint would be something from your isp !

OK mitch I had mine set at medium I don't understand logs at all... I see svchost.exe outgoing and action blocked and other don't have any name on it...I only see svchost.exe. I had set generic host processors allowed except server on internet. I allowed most of my programs access except some not allowed on server. I even removed generic host processors from ZA so when I rebooted, ZA asked me to allow and I say yes...I thought that will take care of problem but it didn't...I don't know how to add zone. hugs, Rose

Hello, Rose can you check these settings just might be the Solution to your problem I'm not sure but can't hurt to check..

Right on internet Explorer select properties then click the connections Tab here you will see Add – Remove – Settings  click on SETTINGS... Here you will see Properties and Advanced Click on ADVANCED Here you will see options like Try to connect say 10 time s  Disconect if idle for 20 minutes also Disconect when connection may no longer be needed check them settings to make sure  its not automaticly disconnecting you..

I think by default most ISP s use this setting Disconect if idle for 20 minutes ..
So as users don't leave there computers on for days thus using up there band width..
Its also away for those on pay as you go don't run up huge bills if they forget to disconect from the net ..
If it is set to disconect if idle for 20 minutes then you can ajust it to what you want ...

I have mine set to 30mins meaning if no one moves the mouse inside a thiry minute period the computer will auto disconect from the internet I also have my firewall set to auto lock down after 25 mins of inactivaty thus stopping all traffic coming and going from this computer meaning if I do forget and leave it on between the firewall and the auto disconect my connection will be droped..

I just like to be around my computer when its on and know whats it doing .. :)

ramblinrose,
Check the settings in ZoneAlarm to see if you have the INTERNET lock set to close your setting after a set time  (https://www.landzdown.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg182.imageshack.us%2Fimg182%2F3761%2Fzap1ed.jpg&hash=2479cec1846434004a530f04a14bb4ff134f2362)
But also you said
Quote I also use wireless router for my laptop
just a thought but witch router is it ? and have you checked the settings on it.
Look at the manual for your router
see trouble shooting

Ohhh I wish you were here in person to look at it for me... :( Zone Alarm is the same as yours. (btw I don't have pro) Wireless router is DELL Trustmobile 2300. A person who set it up for me told me router were out of dated but she found a way around it and I was able to connect internet, that was a year ago ...I had no problem till now. I don't have a manual for router. I don't know where is it.  :? I don't know what caused it but it seemed to happened after latest updates I think.

I could buy a new wireless router?? Would that help?

Telephone repair men told me it might be modem. They are going to try to reprogram modem and  I have no idea...so hopefully they will solved it. They were supposed to give me a new modem. Hubby will call to find out Monday. I can stay connected as long as I am using it and whenever I go to another website I gets no page displayed then I used back botton and try again...it worked like 2 or 3 tries. That way I won't have to restart everytime. Then if I'm not using pc for awhile, I have to restart. It is very annoying, you know? At least I have connection, I guess better than nothing! Hopefully we can find something just like SpyDie helped me from highjack logs I posted here.

I appreciated your help, Gr@ph and numbnuts....hugs, Rose  :rose: BTW how did you post screenshots here? Will you give me instructions? Thanks!

ramblinrose,
Quotehow did you post screenshots here? Will you give me instructions? Thanks
you can use a program called ScreenPrint32 (http://www.provtech.co.uk/software/screenprint32.asp)
QuoteScreenPrint32 allows you to print and/or capture to disk or clipboard, the full desktop, active window, predefined area, or user selected area of the screen. Add user defined headers and footers with date and time stamps etc, resize the printed image, convert to greyscale or negative image, fade or resize the image to reduce toner/ink usage, print by default to any available printer. It can be set up to be completely transparent to the end user.
Capture a screen area and paste directly into your documents. Easily configured with user specific or global settings which are persistent after reboot.
Images may be saved to a user selected folder in either GIF, BMP, JPG or PNG formats with user configurable file naming.
once you have captured what it is you want to post ie: your screenshot you need to upload it to a image hosting service such as Yoxio (http://www.yoxio.com/) you have to register but you can do this for free there is a 1mb limit on the amount you can upload.
or you can upload them to imageshack (http://imageshack.us/)
QuoteImageShack's mission is to provide an easy-to-use image hosting service for everyone

go on you will soon master sending a screen shot (https://www.landzdown.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fsmilies.sofrayt.com%2Ffsc%2Fgentleman.gif&hash=6c1090d9e743a45850d1ab96b5ae1394649c9d02)
