Hi everyone. I'm having a problem with my PC. It seems to restart every so often. I think it has something to do with a virus called remon.sys or hacktool.rootkit, as was sais by norton antivirus. I've tried all that I can to get rid of the virus but to no avail. What's worse is I think its not only remon.sys. I think lsass.exe failing on me every so often is a symptom of the sasser worm, but I'm not sure because all the toolkits or antivirus repair kits I've downloaded can't seem to fix it. I beleive there may be a number of viruses in my PC that my current antivirus application can't find. I'm really stuck now. I don't know what to do. If any one can help me out, I'd be really grateful.
Here is the hijackthis file I've saved.

To anyone who can help me, thanks in advance.
Hi lkenshin23 :welcome:
Others will be along to help you with your problems before too long. I just happened to see you join and post, and wanted to welcome you to LandzDown.
I really know very little about the specific problems which computers can get, although I do know the basic steps which one should take, to be secure. Others may post more links than this, but I wanted to maybe get you started to educate yourself, while you wait for replies. Here are links to a couple of good resources:
Before you Connect a New Computer to the Internet (http://www.cert.org/tech_tips/before_you_plug_in.html)
(It looks like you probably have an older computer, but the info in this article is still very valid.)
Cleaning a Pest-Infested Computer (http://rgharper.mvps.org/cleanit.htm)
I hope this helps get you started. Good luck! These guys at LzD are the best! I'm sure they'll be able to help you
PS -- if the links don't work, let me know, probably just typos!
thanks brynn ^^
i'll definitely check it out immediately... ^_^
Hi, lkenshin23. I'm not seeing what I would expect as a sign of that infection. Let's see if a couple other logs will help.
A. Please post a startuplist:
- Launch HijackThis and press the Config Button
- Click Misc Tools
- Check both boxes next to the Generate StartupList log
- Click the generate startuplist log button.
- Paste the contents into your next reply
B. Please
RIGHT-CLICK HERE (http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.vbs) to download Silent Runner's ©Andrew Aronoff.
- Save it to the desktop.
- Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
- You will receive a prompt:
- Do you want to skip supplementary searches?
- You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done, let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
- Once you receive the prompt All Done!, open the text file on the desktop, copy that entire log, and paste it here.
*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

Here are the two files... they're quite bulky... so sorry about that...
Hi, lkenshin23. Thank you for the additional logs. I've found conflicting information on researching the provided information. So, let's see what the results are from a Trojan Hunter scan:
Download and Install the 30-day trial of TrojanHunter (http://castlecops.com/downloads-file-83.html)
TrojanHunter runs on Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000 and XP. With the trial version you need to manually update the rule files before you can start scanning.
Click here for Manual Update Instructions (http://www.misec.net/trojanhunter/updating/)
To do a full scan be sure the boxes are checked (green) beside your main hard drive folders, then click on Full Scan. The program is fully functional and free to first time users for only 30 days.
After getting to the bottom of the problem, you need to install XP SP 2 and IE SP2.
Let us know the results of the Trojan Hunter scan.
Edit Note: After the Trojan Hunter scan, please post a fresh HJT log. I've consulted with a team member who had a suggestion.
Thanks!

i made a search and it was really there... should i delete remon.sys from C:\windows\system32? but i'm worried that if its not taken care of properly it may come back through a backdoor or something...
Hi, lkenshin23. Please do the following.
A. Please download the Killbox (http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip) © Option^Explicit.
Unzip it to the desktop. You'll use it in a bit.
B. Scan with HiJackThis and put a check in the box next to the following items:
O23 - Service: Socks-Cap (Sc32Inch) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\Sc32Inch.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: SQLDGM - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\sql-dgm.exe (file missing)
Close all browsers and windows, click on 'fix selected' and allow HJT to fix these entries.
C. Enable the viewing of Hidden files (you can reverse these steps after cleanup is completed):
1. Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
2. Double-click on the My Computer icon.
3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
4. After the new window appears select the View tab.
5. Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
6. Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
7. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
8. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
9. Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
10. Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.
D. Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Place the following lines (complete paths) in bold in the "Full Path of File to Delete" box in Killbox, and click the red button with the white X on it after each. (If any of the listed files are not there, proceed with any that are found.)
C:\WINDOWS\Sc32Inch.exe
C:\WINDOWS\sql-dgm.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\remon.sys
For these files, put a mark next to "Delete on Reboot". Copy and paste each file into the file name box, then click the red button with the X after each. It will ask you if you want to reboot each time you click it, answer NO until after you've pasted the last file name, at which time you should answer Yes.
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.
E. Please post a fresh HJT log and advise as to the status.
Hi Corrine,
Everything looks good now. I'll still be observing my computer for the next several days though just to be sure. Anyway, Thank you so much for all your help. I really appreciate it. :)

Hi, lkenshin23. I'm at work so don't have time to carefully examine your log. At a quick glance, I see the one "file missing" service is still showing. In addition, there are some temp files that woudl likely be best removed.
Download CCleaner from the link at the upper right of this page: http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner.html . When installing, be sure to UNcheck the Yahoo toolbar if you do not want it on your system.
Instructions for using CCleaner:
- Before first use, check under Options > Advanced > UNcheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours".
- A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
- To protect logon cookies that you wish to retain, under Options > Cookies. Select and using the arrow move those cookies to the "Cookies to keep" column.
- Then select the items you wish to clean up.
- In the Windows Tab:
- Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section.
- Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
- Clean all entries in the "System" section.
- Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
- Clean any others that you choose.
- In the Applications Tab:
- Clean all in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
- Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
- Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
- Clean any others that you choose.
- Click the "Run Cleaner" button and it will scan and clean your system.
- Click exit.
- Shutdown/restart the computer.
Following that, as a double-check, please download RootKitRevealer from here:
http://www.sysinternals.com/files/rootkitrevealer.zip
Unzip it to the desktop, run it, and click Scan. This will generate a log file; please post the entire contents of the log file here for us to see.
Thanks.
Hi, lkenshin23. I took another look at your log and haven't spotted anything other that the 023 line still on your machine:
O23 - Service: Socks-Cap (Sc32Inch) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\Sc32Inch.exe (file missing)

I tried removing it using hjt but it seems that it can't be removed. Is it maybe just an error in one of my applications?
Did you try removing C:\WINDOWS\Sc32Inch.exe with Killbox?
Can you post the logfile from Rootkit revealer please rather than the image. Thanks.
oh I'm so sorry about that. I thought i was able to expand the path/ filename... anyway here is the log of rootkit revealer.

Yes. I used killbox 2x on this but it's still there. C:\WINDOWS\Sc32Inch.exe Is it really not supposed to be there? or maybe it's just an error or bug?
* Download
Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe (ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe)
Before running Dr.Web CureIt, please run CCleaner again. Shutdown/restart and then do the followng:
- Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
- This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
- Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
- Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
- Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
- Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
- When the scan has finished, in the menu, click file and choose save report list
- Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
- Close Dr.Web Cureit.
- Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
- After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.
Please include a fresh HJT log with the log from Dr.Web.
When I opened the .csv file from DrWeb it didn't contain anything.
anyway, here is the hijack this log :)

nope
Hi, lkenshin23. Sorry for the delay. I wanted to consult with other members of the team on the next steps proposed as I am not satisfied that everything has been removed yet as HijackThis often reports a service as "file missing" even though it is still there and active.
A. Please download
ewido AntiMalware (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/). It is a free version of the program.
- Install ewido AntiMalware
- Launch ewido, there will be a large yellow e icon on your desktop, double-click it.
- The program will prompt you to update. Click the OK button.
- The program will now open to the main screen
- On the left-hand side of the main screen, click on Update
- Click on Start. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
- When complete, the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful".
- Do not scan yet.
- If you have problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido -- Ewido manual updates (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/)
- Die Hard created a tutorial for ewido, which is available here: http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/Tutorials/ewidoQuickGuide.pdf
B. Launch HijackThis and do the following:
- Click "Config" button
- Click "Misc Tools" button
- Click "Delete an NT Service" button
- Copy and Paste the bold text in the "Delete an NT Service" window: Sc32Inch
C. Restart your computer in
Safe Mode.
- If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
- Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
- Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu will appear. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
- Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
- Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe Mode.
- Login on your usual account.
If you need further assistance with Safe Mode, see Symantec (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406)
D. Run ewido:
- Open ewido and click on scanner
- Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
- While the scan is in progress, you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
- When prompted to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
- Checkmark the box: *Create encrypted backup in the quarantine* (recommended). Click OK.
- Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
- Click Save report.
- Save the report.txt file to your desktop, or any other easily accessible location.
Now close ewido.
E. Please post the following with your reply and let us know if you've received any further warnings from Norton and letl us know how you're doing:
- the ewido log
- a fresh HijackThis log
Hi Corrine,
I'm in the part B of your instruction:
B. Launch HijackThis and do the following:
* Click "Config" button
* Click "Misc Tools" button
* Click "Delete an NT Service" button
* Copy and Paste the bold text in the "Delete an NT Service" window: Sc32Inch
around there when it seems like I can't delete the application.
Here is what HJT tells me. I've tried eliminating the program using scan and fix checked once again, before trying your instruction for the second time and it still tells me the same message. The message is this.
(https://www.landzdown.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg174.imageshack.us%2Fimg174%2F8558%2Funtitled31fo.jpg&hash=eeec01229ca89f988b10128128c3a56b4a21b007)
Sorry to step in but try doing that in safe mode. (Corrine's post has instructions on how to boot into safe mode if you don't know how to). In theory, that process shouldn't be started when you run into safe mode if its, there are other ways we can use to get rid of it.
HTH
Thanks, SpyDie. You can step in any time!
Hi guys,
I've tried what you suggested. I tried to eliminate it in safe mode but it just says the same thing as the img I've pasted. It just doesn't want to be removed.
Could you try this for me please?
http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/avenger.zip
Download that above file and extract the contents (right-click on the zip file and select 'Extract All' and follow the wizard). Please extract it to the Desktop.
Launch The Avenger by double-clicking on the icon on the desktop. Click OK to the prompt. Choose "Input Script Manually". (Which is under "Script file to execute")
Click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
Copy/paste the contents of the following box into that "View/edit script" in Avenger.
Files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\Sc32Inch.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\remon.sys
Hit 'Done'
Answer 'Yes' at the prompts.
Your computer will automatically restart.
Once you've logged back in, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
The Avenger will create a logfile, which is located at C:\avenger.txt
Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply along with a fresh HJT log by using Add/Reply
Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script

Now that is really strange....could you try this please?
Here is a VBS file created a while ago by an expert called Mosaic1. It'll create a list of the services that are currently running on the computer. Save it to the desktop or somewhere you can access easily because it'll create a log in the directory it is run from called Active.txt - could you please post that log?
Also, could you try fixing that entry again for me please?
Run HijackThis, Run a scan with it again and checkmark the box next to this:
O23 - Service: Socks-Cap (Sc32Inch) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\Sc32Inch.exe (file missing)
Reboot & post that logfile too please.

I tried checking and removing O23 - Service: Socks-Cap (Sc32Inch) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\Sc32Inch.exe (file missing) through hijackthis but it just won't budge. It just won't be removed. It says in the previous log from avenger that the file doesn't exist. But when I try to delete it using NT service button from HJT config it says that I am using it. It's really really fishy.

Hi, lkenshin23. We're double-teaming you and won't hesitate to bring in other team members either!
I have a few questions --
Are you logged on as Admin or regular user with limited permissions?
Have you tried removing in safe mode again or were you in normal mode?
Is the browser closed when attempting to remove with HijackThis?
Also, is Norton still alerting about remon.sys? (or anything else?)
Are you logged on as Admin or regular user with limited permissions?
I tried it in both admin and regular user but it just says the same thing. It says the program is running so I can't delete it.
(https://www.landzdown.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg174.imageshack.us%2Fimg174%2F8558%2Funtitled31fo.jpg&hash=eeec01229ca89f988b10128128c3a56b4a21b007)
Have you tried removing in safe mode again or were you in normal mode?
Yep. Tried it in safe mode as both admin and regular user.
Is the browser closed when attempting to remove with HijackThis?
Yes. It is closed.
is Norton still alerting about remon.sys? (or anything else?)
I haven't seen it recently; however, I'm still obseving though.
Ok, let's try this.
Please download Process Explorer: http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/processexplorer.html (select "Download Process Explorer (x86 - 1.47 MB) - you plan on using Process Explorer on 32-bit NT/2K/XP/Server 2003").
Unzip to a folder of its own and click on procexp.exe to start Process Explorer.
- Locate and highlight the demon service C:\WINDOWS\Sc32Inch.exe in the list under services.exe
- With the Sc32Inch.exe entry highlighted, from the menu select Process > Properties
- In the properties box, click threads and save a screen copy of that window with the Threads shown to include with your reply.
- Click Cancel to close the Properties window
- With only the Sc32Inch.exe entry selected (disregard the color coding), click Process Suspend and then Process Kill (del)
Scan with HijackThis and if the demon line appears, see if you can remove it this time. Please post the screen copy of the "Threads" with the results of the HJT scan.
I wonder if the Damage Cleanup Template/Engine here is worth a shot?

This tab is interesting: http://www.trendmicro.com.au/consumer/vinfo/encyclopedia.php?LYstr=VMAINDATA&vNav=3&VName=WORM_SDBOT.DIN
Hi guys,
Sorry I wasn't able to reply yesterday. I was really caught up with work. So, anyway, here is the progress.
I tried Corrine's suggestion and downloaded process explorer. I, however, couldn't find the Sc32Inch.exe there. Here is an image of how it looked like.
(https://www.landzdown.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg334.imageshack.us%2Fimg334%2F5935%2Funtitled45mh.jpg&hash=7daaf9b7fc07a37c918d10b807bbc0b883f918b8)
Now, after checking process explorer, I went and checked Winchester's link and manually fixed the registry keys affected. I think that fixed it. I hope.
Anyway, here is the new HJT log and I couldn't see Sc32Inch anymore. :)

I'm just posting the log for you guys to see if there is any more problems. Thank you all for your help. I really appreciate it. :)
Seeing WgaLogon.dll in the O20 line (Windows Genuine Advantage), and noticing that you are running SP1 ...
When things are sorted out finally, please be sure to update to SP2. Are you current in the other Windows updates?
Many thanks for that link, Winchester73! Looks like it did take the big guns after all. ;)
How does it feel, lkenshin23, to know you're finally rid of that demon?
Indeed, Winchester73 is correct about your needing to update to XP Service Pack 2. In addition, IE also needs to be updated to SP2. Without updating, your PC is highly vulnerable to another serious infection.
So, before anything else happens, let's clear System Restore and create a fresh, clean restore point:
1. Click Start, and then right-click My Computer.
2. Click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Check Turn off System Restore.
5. Click Apply, and then click OK.
6. Restart the computer.
7. Repeat steps 1 through 6, except in step 4, uncheck Turn Off System Restore.
Then after you do this, please create a new restore point:
Got to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore. On the next page that comes up you will have three choices, choose Create Restore Point. Then click next type in a description "after cleanup" or something like that. Then choose "Create" then close.
After that, indeed, get SP2 installed for both your PC and Internet Explorer.
For additional information on protecting your PC, please see Tony Klein's "So how did I get infected in the first place?" (http://www.landzdown.com/index.php?topic=2783.0) for important tips on how to prevent future infections. There is also a lot of helpful information in "Mitch's Good Stuff" linked from here (http://www.landzdown.com/index.php?topic=192.0).
Install and update both SpywareBlaster & SpyGuard to prevent the installation of spyware and other potentially unwanted software:
SpywareBlaster -- http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
SpywareGuard -- http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html
If you use Internet Explorer, IE-Spyad will add thousands of sites into your IE restricted zone: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm .
Another useful program is StartupMonitor, which will warn you when somethings tries to sneak in: http://www.mlin.net/StartupMonitor.shtml

Are you running BOTH Norton and NOD32?
O23 - Service: Norton AntiVirus Auto Protect Service (navapsvc) - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe
O23 - Service: NOD32 Kernel Service (NOD32krn) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Eset\nod32krn.exe
Running processes:
C:\Program Files\Eset\nod32kui.exe
C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe
C:\Program Files\Eset\nod32krn.exe
oh sorry i haven't checked this thread in a while...
yep i'm running both nod32 and norton in my pc :)
i'm trying to update to sp2 now by the way but there seems to be an error i still need to fix :)
Why are you running two anti-virus applications at the same time?
Most of us would say that running two anti-virus products concurrently will cause operational issues, and would strongly advise you never to do this.
oh really? I didn't know that. Thanks for telling me. I'll uninstall nod32 right away. :)
Actually, I believe NOD has an excellent reputation.
If you continue to have problems installing SP2, this is a free service and toll-free call. It is the Microsoft PCSafety help center. Tell them you had an infection because you can't get updates.

LOL ... I use NOD32 ... :P
And you have an excellent reputation too. ;)
Hi guys,
I've finally managed to install all the windows updates, most importantly SP2. Anyway, I tried out Microsoft's new Window's Live Safety center and it found some backdoor trojans or something. Anyway, i tried to kill it using killbox but unfortunately it didn'tm work.
Here is a screenie of what the full system scan detected.
(https://www.landzdown.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg183.imageshack.us%2Fimg183%2F6520%2Funtitled55kn.jpg&hash=cb13992f28d4db5f10be7af1185dcad85b68d2ff)
Please tell me if this is something to be worried about, and if it is, I want to learn how to remove it.
Thank you. :)
Hi, lkenshin23. First, congrats on getting the upgrade to SP2. That will go a long way to helping to protect your system.
As to the findings by Window's Live Safety Center, first of all, keep in mind that it is Beta software. As SpyDie says, Beta. Software undergoes beta testing shortly before it's released. Beta is Latin for 'still doesn't work.'
In this case, however, it has detected the locked/encrypted file from KillBox. Not to worry, that is one of the files removed on a previous cleanup and cannot "get loose". You can remove it if you wish.
The other findings are in System Restore. No outside program can empty that, it must be done by you. Please follow the directions below to clear system restore:
Windows XP
Thanks Corrine :)
