Title: Test
Post by: Tarnak on July 18, 2006, 01:47:42 AM
AlphaNumeric Hangman

This game uses the standard alphabet choices AND number symbols 0-9.  Which means 2 consecutive number symbols can represent double digits, such as 49 or just a single number 5.

Hell's Bells Tarnak  :tease:  :hysterical:

You've already seen most of MY growing pains with this game.

Not sure how Graph does it, but I'm gonna post how I do it.

HANGMAN TUTORIAL
#1 Setting Up A Hangman Game
Add underlines, with 8 spaces at the beginning of the sentence, 1 space between each underline, and 5 spaces inbetween each word.  Additional spaces make it easier for viewer.  I do this in notepad/blank email doc and save on my puter (see example below) so I have an ongoing answer sheet to monitor the game with.  Then I copy and paste my underlines into a new post to start the game.  I also keep a copy of the hangman gallows urls in this same doc.  This is where the most time is spent, but once this is done, you don't have to mess with the underlines, cuz I use "quote" of the last post that I made in the game.  This way all you are adding in the played guesses, listing any missed letters, and adding a new gallow url if needed.  Helpful to copy/paste the type of hangman game in the first post too, ie: Alpha, alphanumeric...(or international if you are brave.)

EXAMPLE:  98.6 Hangman Game doc saved on my puter
Note, I took out the beginning bracket of each img tag code so the url sentence is shown, not the gallows image. That beginning bracket needs to be added back in to post the gallows image.

ARE YOU AT 98.6F/37C?

#2 Monitoring the game
When somedbody guesses, go back to YOUR last post of the game and choose "quote"
Backspace thru the first line to delete, which takes out the "quote' tag, and backspace thru the last line as well, the "end quote tag".  Put your cursor directly to the right of the underline that you want to add a letter, backspace to delete, and add the letter.  On the first guess I add a line "There are X number of A's" for example, which is easily changed from the quote screen.  Probably an unneccessary line if you don't want to be changing it. But if somebody guesses wrong :muahaha:  there needs to be a line started listing "Missed letters/numbers" so ppl know that guess has already been played.  And then in your quote screen you have an ongoing list, and you just add the last wrong guess(s).

EXAMPLE:  98.6 hangman quote screen before changes
Note, I took out the beginning and end brackets of each tag code so the "quote screen" is shown.

#3 Adding gallows
Just copy/paste the respective line from one of those listed above, courtesy of our own GR@PH;<'S.
They are saved here for reference, or you can choose to save them all to your computer like I do.  The IMG tags are already added.  Paste one of those lines where you want the image to show up (without the description at the end of each line)
Say you have a 3rd wrong guess, in your quote screen, backspace thru the url line that is there to delete, and copy/paste the respective gallows url from this tutorial or your notepad where you have them all saved.  It helps to hit the Preview button, to see your new changes.

#4 Editorial
This looks more complicated than it is :P There are other ways, and I've tried them all   :hysterical: No one has to do it this way, but I thought it might be helpful to see what works quickest for ME...and it gets faster after you are thru the first 2 screens.  Sometimes when ya get busy, you can miss something  in your monitoring of the game, I have and even practiced in the testing forum.  But it just a game, just add the correction note in your next post and don't sweat it, or there's always a friendly Mod here to help with an edit.

(My first tutorial, btw, and it's for a game!  :hysterical: Go figure.)

Tarnak,

More information that ANYONE would ever want to know about this goofy game.  More detail than you'll need as well.  But I thought I'd add extra details for anyone else thinking this game is...er, um, a challenge to host.

Took me awhile to learn some of these tricks  :hysterical: but it's do-able.

You can always ask Graph  :beg: to host it for ya

Hi ripley,

I appreciate your advice and assistance.  :D  However, I still am unable to get what I have saved in notepad(as a template), to stick when I post into the forum. I need a lot more edit time than the 5 minutes one is given to modify ones post. Just have to muddle through somehow. :hysterical: :stupid:

Tarnak,

Start a new post with reply.  Don't try to edit/modify what you have already posted...too hard.

Once you have a new window with "reply," then copy/paste your new game/info from your notepad in there.  Then when you feel you have what you want, hit "Preview," not post, to see how it looks.

If there are edits/changes you want to make, you'll see them, and down below, you'll still have an active window box to make your changes, without having to fight for "edit time."

Sometimes I preview, and make changes, and preview, and make changes, and preview...I kinda slow that way  :hysterical:

Start with just the underlines first...no gallows yet, cuz no wrong guesses yet.  If that looks good, then post.

Then view it posted, and hit the "quote"  button.

Now here's where you place your cursor to the right of the underline where you want to add an A.  Do that with each of the A's.  Then do the same for the N's.  Then take out/delete the top and bottom lines with the "quote" info/tags.  Then, don't hit post, hit preview again, and you'll see how it looks.  You can preview and preview til the cows come home

If it still doesn't look right in your preview, then maybe wait 'til Graph is in...tomorrow...and he can help with edits.

You on the right track tho   You are one of the best hangman players we have, so we ARE gonna figure this out!  Either that, or we're gonna end up with ripley's goofy sentences to guess at  :hysterical:

Tarnak,

Example, I just hit quote on the game you posted here in testing forum.  I placed my cursor to the right of an underline that looks like where one of the A's go, hit the backspace to delete the underline, then hit A.  Here's where the issue of spacing between the underlines comes in.
Quote from: ripleyAdd underlines, with 8 spaces at the beginning of the sentence, 1 space between each underline, and 5 spaces inbetween each word.  Additional spaces make it easier for viewer.

Is this making any sense?
