In April, Grisoft acquired ewido networks and its main product, ewido anti-spyware. Version 4.0 is the first post-acquisition release. But although it has a new user interface and a number of added features, I just can't recommend it while there are other apps that cost the same and do a much better job.
Like Grisoft's AVG antivirus, ewido comes in both a free and a more powerful paid edition. The product runs under Microsoft Windows 2000 or XP and claims tested compatibility with 80-odd antivirus products. New users of the free edition get the full product's features for the first 30 days.

Hi Friends,
I don't know if this thread is meant to receive replies, or just for informational purposes. But thought I'd add a comment about my experience. After installing the newest version (free version), I kept having little freeze-ups, which were partly addressed in another thread, but not definitely diagnosed or resolved. But after watching the Task Manager closely, eventually noticed that ewido.exe was using 2, 4, 8% cpu, during every freeze. I at first had ignored it because 2, 4, and 8% does not seem like enough to freeze a system, until I realized that just the 2, 4, and 8 cpu was way more than even much, much larger programs were using. I posted in the Wilders' ewido forum, where it was concluded I don't have enough memory. However, as I said, I have several much, much larger programs which run without using any obvious cpu. The bottom line is that once I uninstalled the newest version, the little freeze-ups have stopped completely.
The reason for the cpu usage is far, far beyond my understanding. I just know that the previous version did not do this, and never caused me a problem...and neither has any other program I have! So just my :2cents:
our post will be moved but thought i would answer
did you use all the features when you installed 4.X?
if you were using their real time monitor ,it will take that much in resorces and could cause a stall !
what i recommend is on install of the trial version, disable that and the updates and then it will work like aaw free, you can download the updates and run a manual scan but it is not running except to do a scan ! i have been with them since the first beta and the first release took my old system to it's knees on a dialup till i turned off the real time monitoring, now i ust use it as one heck of a good scanner
mitch
I was using the free version, with auto updates and real-time protection DISabled. I don't mean to criticize its quality as a malware scanner, just the cpu use prevents me from keeping it installed.
if anyone has other info, PLEASE post and correct me... but --
i'd always been under the impression "CPU USEAGE" was just one bit of information about our systems -- ie, an app or process could crash us by using ONE percent, if it conflicted with other apps.
in other words: 100 percent cpu useage will freeze or crash a PC, BUT ewido could cause a crash, due to other conflicts that DON'T show alot of memory use.
- BRYNN: did your task manager show "ONE HUNDRED PERCENT CPU USEAGE" when it crashed??
(i'm interested in ewido, so i'm researching it. i already use adaware and spybot without any freezes or crashing, so i'm not likely to try ewido if there's a chance of new problems...)
:gwave:
Uh, I wasn't having crashes. My system would freeze up for several moments (just enough to annoy me, lol), then resolve itself. In all cases, the total cpu use and the ewido.exe cpu use were identical (2, 4 8 %).
sorry, brynn, i need to pay better attention to what i read
:smash:
- i've gotten temporary "freeze-ups" caused by high memory use, but as far as i could tell, each time this happened my OVERALL TOTAL memory use was VERY high - 90 percent plus.
seems awfully weird that 2 to 8 percent could trigger that (and you said TOTAL CPU use was identical to edwio use at 2-4 percent -- isn't that too low to cause ANY memory issues?
---- right now, my opera.exe is 2-5 percent, my wmplayer is 3-16 percent, etc. (these upper levels are only hit for a fraction of a second, and not often)
**** i'll google to get more info.
i'm glad the problem was resolved for you, even if it was by uninstalling the ewido application
no.
if a bad app steps on memory used by another app (it shouldn't) it can cause problems or crash the system.
it doesn't take a lot of memory usage to do that; it could be a bit, or a word.
(windows xp, for example, allocates memory to an app; it is the only app that is supposed to use that memory space. poorly written apps may attempt to write outside of their memory range. that causes problems.)
