Testing / testing SmileyPad in Windows 7

Hi Friends,
I love SmileyPad, but fear it will not survive further Windows upgrades.  (It can still be downloaded from internet, but is no longer supported by creators, or anyone else.....which is really too bad )(I can't believe no one has picked up SmileyPad, and kept it upgraded debugged; it's a great little program!)  I have it installed and running, using Compatibility, on Windows 7 64-bit.  I've managed to successfully export one folder from XP machine, and imported.  But can't seem to get any other folders working.  I can't even figure out if the problem is in the export from XP or import to W7   Although the folders do appear to contain different values of kb, so I think the smileys are in the exported folders.

It does appear that I will be able to manually add the smileys, one by one -- which will be a pain.  However, installing some new smiley manager will require the same effort.  So I might as well try to get SmileyPad working, if I can.  But before I spend so much time caching all my smileys, I thought I should make sure I can actually use them.

Unfortunately, I've dropped 2 smileys into this message so far, but don't see them here in the editor.  They are 2 that I've added individually.  Here are a couple from the folder that I successfully export/imported --     Yeah, they don't seem to be showing up either.  Let me try Preview....

Ok :cry: looks like I'm not gonna be able to get it working on W7 :(  (The 2 smileys in this sentence are from the editor.)

Does anyone know if there might be some security or other feature of W7, or some setting I could tweak, to allow dropping smileys into editor?

Well, I have done some searching, and found a couple of smiley managers that I might be able to use.
--  One is EmotipadII, on cnet Downloads.  But it's website redirects to some motorcycle website.  So I'm doubting that any kind of support for this product is available.
--  The other is GetSmile 1.952 for Windows 7.  However, it costs $25, and I don't particularly care for that style of smiley :(  I know I can use my own, but seems a lot to pay for just the manager.

Does anyone know of any smiley managers out there, that you can recommend (hopefully free ones but anything up to $25)?

Still setting up new laptop, and just came across Windows 7 Backup.  Wow!

On my XP machine, I do what I call manual backups, where I just save all the files that are important to me to disc, on a regular basis.  But I've been wanting to get an external hard drive and something like Acronis True Image (I think that's the name), and do the system image type of automated backups.  So far, I haven't gotten around to it  :roll:

So I'm excited to see this option on Windows 7.  But naturally I'm curious how the new Windows Backup compares to something like Acronis.  Are they more or less the same thing?  Or are there any significant differences?  I have to think Acronis would need to add more functionality to remain competitive, now that Windows offers this type of backup.

Also, if I do get the Acronis, or some similar product for my XP machine, could I back them each up to the same external hard drive?  Or would I need an external drive for each machine?  Or...I guess if the W7 Backup doesn't meet all my needs, I would just use the Acronis (or other) on both computers....or upgrade the XP to W7 (not my 1st choice!).

Anyway, I'd be interested to hear any thoughts or comments on the W7 Backup feature.

I guess this message belongs here?  I remember years ago posting a similar question.  I saw my email address showing in my member profile, and was concerned because in the options in my User CP, I chose to hide my email address.  The response was that is it shows up to ME, but to no one else.

Now I just noticed it in the Members list, and hoping it's the same answer -- that it shows to me, but no one else?

Suggestions and Site Feedback / text editor glitch?

Hi Friends,
This isn't a suggestion, but a report of a problem.  It's been happening for quite a while.  So long that I couldn't even guess when it started.  And when it started, I didn't report it, because I thought it was probably temporary, or hoping so anyway.  Plus it doesn't prevent or disable any feature, it's just annoying.  But it has persisted now least a year....1 to 2 years.  Also didn't report it because I can't think of the right words to describe it -- so please understand that.  Unfortunately, it's not something that can be captured in a screen shot.  I've never seen this or had it happen anywhere else, any other forum or text editor.

So, here goes.  I start a new topic, and can type without any problems until the message reaches a length of about 1 & 1/2 to twice the length of the message field.  When I reach that point in this message, I will type a bunch of [Shift + number] characters.  Meanwhile, I'll continue to try to describe it.  With every keystroke, the entire message text "scrolls" very fast.  In fact I would say that it jumps.  It jumps back to roughly the point where it started.  So that when it 1st starts, with every single keystroke in that line the text scrolls or jumps up one line, so that I can't see the line I'm typing.  If I type one letter, it jumps once.  If I type 5 letters, it jumps 5 times, once for each letter.  @#$%^&* Ok, it just started to jump!  And if I type at full speed, it jumps so fast that the text can't be read.

Now I'm 3 lines below the point where the text started jumping. With each letter I type, the entire text jumps back up to the point where the jumping started, 3 lines up.  I don't think that the message field is the same size as the area that contains the message after it's posted.  So in other words, if you're looking at this message as it's posted and measuring 3 lines up, it's probably not the same.

Ok, so here I am 7 or 8 lines below, and each time I type a letter, the entire text jumps beck up to where the jumping started.  When I strike each key, the entire text jumps back down to the line I'm typing.  So if I hit a key and hold it down, the text is positioned normallly where I can read what I'm typing.  And it's immediately adjacent to the bottom of the text field (there's no extra space).  But when I release the key, the text jump back up to where it started.

And actually, here's where it's confusing trying to describe it.  When I hit a key and hold it down, and I say the text jumps down, in reality it's jumping up, so that the line I'm typing (obviously the bottom line at any moment) is visible.  And when I release the key, and I say it jumps up, in reality the entire text is jumping down, concealing everything that I've typed since the problem started.  Yeah, I know, it sounds crazy, and well, it IS crazy!

There's still more info I can give you.  OH! Light bulb!  Someone could probably see what it's doing by "taking control" of my computer, you know, like a lot of tech support people do these days?

Anyway, I just wanted to add a couple more things.  When I'm typing, and the text jumps, the cursor stays where it's supposed to, with the text; in other words, it disappears along with the text I'm typing.

And finally, as I'm typing away, it's key down - text up.  And release key - text down.  After I release the key and the text goes down, hiding what I just typed, and revealing the place I was typing when the problem started -- why don't I manually scroll back down to where it's supposed to be?  Yes, I can manually scroll back down.  But the 1st keystroke I make, and it's jumping again!

Since I've never seen this happen at another forum, or in a text editor of any kind, I don't know if it's a problem on my end, or with the forum software.  I do know that it also happens, and in the exact same way, on my new laptop.  So I'm leaning towards forum software.

Anyway, I'd appreciate if someone has some time, and it's someone who knows how to do the computer sharing thing, if we could get "hooked up", just long enough to witness the problem?  OR if anyone has any idea what's going on or what might be done to fix or workaround, I'd really appreciate it :D

Still having fun loading up my new Windows 7 laptop :mitch:  And I want to create a manual restore point before installing, especially very large programs; a practice I learned here years ago from Corrine :rose:  But when I open System Restore, I don't find any options to create my own restore point.  Is there a way to do it in Windows 7?

I have seen in some of my security programs, where there's an option to automatically create a restore point before deleting malware, or "fixing".  So it makes me wonder if W7 maybe automatically creates a restore point whenever anything is installed?

Not sure if this is the proper place to post this, since it could fall in a few different categories of malicious activity.

A couple of months ago, I got a phone call from an organization (for lack of better word) called Techies Online.  Initially it came across as 3rd party solicitation, which as I've put my phone number on the National Do-Not-Call List, was a clear violation.  But as the conversation continued, it became so much more....

And normally, I would not have permitted any conversaton, would simply have hung up on them, and then reported to the various agencies which investigate violations of Do-Not-Call.  But the first words out of their mouth informed me that my computer had become infected with so many viruses that it would crash in just a day or 2, if I did not follow their instructions, and let them clean it up for me.  (OMG!!) So because I knew that no stranger has any idea what is on my computer, or even whether I had a computer, I knew right away it was a malicious call, and wanted so very much to be able to report them to as many agencies as I could think of.  But first I had to hear their scam.

In order to prove that my computer was horribly infected with malware, they directed my to the Event Viewer.  They told me that every entry in the Event Viewer with a yellow icon in front of it was a virus and that every entry with a red icon was software that has been corrupted by the virus.  Then in my best helpless old lady voice, I asked what should I do, lol!

Next they directed me to look up some kind of code (by now, I've forgotten what it was).  Then to a website through which I should enter that code so that they could view the files on my computer.  Again, I've forgotten the name of that website.  I don't think it was a site by which they could take control of my computer, although it might have been.  Anyway, at that point, I told them the site wasn't working, that I was clicking what they told me to, but nothing was happening.  Also, I realized that it was much worse than a solicitation call and wanted a few minutes to try and figure out if there might be some agency to which I could report them, other than Do-Not-Call.  So I said I needed a bathroom break and called my ISP (who are local and offer REAL tech support, not scripts).  Unfortunately, I don't think such an agency even exists!  Too bad.

When they called me back, I said I didn't have time to do whatever they wanted me to do, and asked them to jump to their bottom line.  He said he wanted me to buy a service from them, which would give them access to my computer at all times, so that they could monitor my computer, clean out the viruses and repair the software that the viruses has corrupted.  I thanked him for the info, and said I would think it over.  I was about to ask for their phone number when he gave me the URL to their website.  Jackpot!  Now having more info about them than I could have hoped for, I asked them never to call me again.

Next, I reported them to the Federal Trade Commission :winchesty73:, the National Consumer League Fraud Center :winchesty73:, as well as Do-Not-Call, which is Federal Communications Commission :winchesty73: .  So in the end, it WAS a 3rd party solicitation, because they wanted me to buy their "service".  But it also was giving them access to install who knows what all sort of virus, trojans, spyware, etc.  And I thought that was it.

But no, it gets even better!  Even though I had asked them not to call me again, they called me again the next day.  Another CLEAR violation of Do-Not-Call, because me just asking them not to call...sort of imposes the DNC rules, even if my number wasn't on the list (which it is).  This time I told them clearly that I was on the DNC List and that they were breaking the law by calling me.  I reminded him that I had the link to the website, and that once I made a decision about buying the service, I would proceed to purchase it online.  At that point, he became insistent that I must not do that by myself, that I absolutely required their help to do it.  He repeated that 3 or 4 times, and I finally realized that perhaps worse than viruses and spyware, he probably intended to use my computer as a distributions system for who knows, all manner of malware and/or spam email!  (Yeah, I know there's a word or term for that, but I can't think of it.)

I never felt personally threatened by this experience, thanks to the awesome education I've received from LzD on computer security.  But it just burns me that there are so many people who could be, and probably have been duped by this scam.  These organizations I've mentioned here, mostly only accepted my reports because the threats came by telephone.  And I think it's a travesty of justice that there are no laws or regulations, in this country (USA) or any country (to my knowledge), to protect citizens from computer- and internet-related fraud, scams and hoaxes.  I do know that there are several websites dedicated to educating the public about such, but none to my knowledge offer enforcement, because there are no laws or regulations to enforce.

What can be done about this?  What can we do to encourage governments to legislate on computer- and internet-related abuse?  How bad does it have to get before the public outcry is loud enough and strong enough to force some serious action?  When does it become a crime for someone or organization to access my computer without my permission?  I can see where spam email can be considered equivalent to 3rd class advertisement in the US or "snail" mail.  I think both should be illegal, but understand how our system came to be the status quo.  But scams that gain access to private citizens' systems are just wrong!

I'm thinking I'll write a slightly different version of this (leaving out LzD references), and send it to my local newspaper as an editorial or something.  But honestly, it will do very little towards actually solving the problem.  I'm looking for something I could do that might have more clout!  I'm hoping someone here can offer me some ideas, or at least referrals to any organizations which might already exist.  Because that scam is SO wrong, and it makes me feel helpless as far as not just stopping this techisonline organization, but preventing others.

I recently bought a new Windows 7 laptop computer, and really struggling with certain things.  In particular, when I try to download a program (any program), I get the following error message:
"You don't have permission to save in this location.  Contact the administrator to obtain permission."
I AM the adiminstrator, my user account is the only one on this computer, and it's the adminstrator account!  On my  XP desktop computer, I'm in the habit of saving my setup/installer file in its own folder, alongside the program folder, in a main program folder in Program Files.  Something like this:

Program Files
 + Adobe
 - Games
    - Tetris
       - Tetris program
       - Tetris installer
 - Inkscape
    - Inkscape program
    - Inkscape installer

I like to be organized, and this is the system I've set up for myself on Windows XP.

Since Dell no longer offers tech support for software (except for $239 per year  :confused:  :blink:  :shock:), I've visited the MS Answers forum for help, but I'm quite dissatisfied with their support.  So I thought I'd present the problem here, where I hope to receive the awesome kind of support you've always provided me.

The response from MS Answers is that it's a security measure.  But downloading into Program Files isn't the only thing for which admin permission is needed, but which is impossible to provide.  Just setting up a new folder manually I need to click through permission dialogs!  I've always been curious about other OSs like Linux, but knowing my own abilities (as many of you know or may have guessed) I'm not sure if I have what it takes to learn to use it (or others).  But I'd appreciate any suggestions you might have.

And of course I'd love it if anyone has a solution to the admin not having admin permission :D

Hi Friends,
I do a lot of game playing in my spare time (on pc).  For safety reasons, I've been trying to only play games OFFline, that I've downloaded and scanned for malware.  But I'm having an increasingly harder time finding freeware games that I like that are available for downloading.

I don't know, maybe I should try one of those station kind of things that the kids play (I don't have kids).  But b4 I make such an expenditure, I have to wonder if there are any relatively safe game sites.

Up until now, I've avoided them, because I know they are fertile grounds for various malware purveyors.  But in my quest for some new games, I wonder, if I have adequate and up-to-date security for my pc, and follow all best practices,  are there maybe a few online game sites that can I feel relatively comfortable about?

If so can anyone recommend some relatively safe online game sites?  Also, are there any dependable ways of identifying safe from not safe?  Or at least indications of such, even if not clear cut signs?

I hope everyone has had a good start to this new year!

I've just upgraded from an older version of WinPatrol, to the current v 15.9.2008.1.  I forgot to make note of my Startup Programs, so I'm having to go through the list and look up the ones I'm not familiar with.  When I did this for the previous version, I used the Castle Cops Startup Database, but am sad to see their website has been closed.  So I've found a couple of others, 1 at, and another at Bleeping Computer.

When I come to the file in WinPatrol titled "Winlogon Userinit" at userinit.exe, I have to look it up.  WinPatrol defines it as
  • "The file Winlogon Userinit appears to be a valid Microsoft system file.  It was found in an undocumented system startup location and may be critical to your system."
Nevertheless, I'm curious (as always  :roll:) and turn to the 2 aforementioned databases to search for more info. returns 2 results, both defined as malware.  Bleeping Computer returns around 9, also all defined as malware.

Now I've gone from curious to confused.  I googled it, and find some evidence that it is indeed a critical Windows process for Logon.  But just to be safe, I ran all my security scans (which are all clean).  Together with the info provided by WinPatrol itself, I feel fairly confident that it is NOT malware, and that it IS critical to the OS.

So here are my questions:

Why do these fairly reputable databases NOT include an entry which defines userinit.exe as a critical Windows process?  Are they not as reputable as I thought?  Can anyone recommend a better database/website for searching startup programs?  I might note here that my google search turned up a couple of threads from some other forums, where people looked it up just as I did, but got rid of it, having been mislead by such databases, that it's always malware...and having serious trouble getting their computers to function properly once again.  You know, I'm sure these website have disclaimers and such.  But for a known critical file, which has been around for years....  I mean, I could understand if it was new on the market, or somewhat obscure.

And don't get me wrong.  My purpose here is not to smear or criticize either website or database.  If I recall correctly from the 1st time I cleaned up my startup entries with WinPatrol, I ran into similar situations with several files, where the databases did not mention legitimate files, and I had to do a good bit of searching to figure out what to do.  I honestly think there may be some good reason why the legitimate files aren't mentioned.   Can anyone speak to this?

Maybe it's just a feature of such websites which doesn't get updated....much, at all?  Maybe most people who use the databases are much more technically aware than I am?  How is the average computer user to navigate such moderately,  technically difficult issues?  Is there a better way to have approached managing the startup entries?

Security Software Programs / quick Q -- what gets scanned?

Hi Friends,
I couldn't figure out where to post this, it's more of a general question.  So feel free to move if necessary :)

I've downloaded a couple of files from the internet, which I want to scan with ESET, before running and installing their programs.  But I'm confused about what gets scanned  :uhm:

I've noticed that installation or setup files are often much smaller than the programs they install.  I'm not really sure how that works, but I guess the installation file contains instructions for creating whatever the program needs.  Or something like that :roll:

Anyway, if I scan the installation/setup file, is it necessarily going to pick up malware files which may not exist yet, which may be created in the installation process?

Or should I wait until after I install the programs to scan?  And if so, how do I find them all, because they could be scattered all over the place, depending on the program?

It's just that I just did a full system scan yesterday, and want to avoid another so soon, if possible.  So is scanning these installation/setup files sufficient, or should I wait until after I install them and do the full scan?

Hi Friends,
From time to time I've created additional user accounts (Windows XP Home SP3, fully updated) for one reason or another.  But eventually, I ended up deleting the extra accounts.

However, in C:\Documents and Settings, there appears to be data from those deleted accounts.  I have:

C:\Docs and Settings\All Users
C:\Docs and Settings\Default User
C:\Docs and Settings\Owner

which have always been there.  And I also have:

C:\Docs and Settings\1st new user
C:\Docs and Settings\2nd new user
C:\Docs and Settings\3rd new user

Some of these deleted user account folders have more data than others, and most of it is .log files and .dat files, but some folders have up to a mb of files.  All together, they contain 11.5 mb.  None of it looks like anything I might need or want.  But since this stuff wasn't deleted when I deleted their user accounts, I have to wonder (in my non-technically-aware way) if there is some reason they were left behind, and maybe I should just leave them alone.

But I tend to be tidy and organized with my files, as much as possible, and I'd like to delete these folders (1st, 2nd, and 3rd new user) if it won't cause me any problems.

So is it ok to delete those, or were they left behind for some reason, and I should just leave them alone?

Analysis and Malware Removal / Brynn's log, think I've got some problems

Hi Friends,
There's a long story behind this, but the short version is that I've had to do TONS of diagnostic work with MS, during which I had to log onto the internet without AV or FW, several times, and as well, I had to uninstall Spybot S&D for awhile.  We were very careful, making sure I was always on the MS website, while all my security was disabled, but somehow, something must have gotten in :(

I've newly installed the current version of Spybot S&D, and a new scan revealed Spambot.bxz Trojan, which has been successfully removed.  But a look at the Startup Files shows several red entries, which are supposed to be malicious.

I've run a fresh HT scan, with the newest version 2.0.2.  In it, I see the same file names that are shown in red in the Spybot S&D Startup List.  So I'm hoping you guys can inspect my HT logfile, and let me know what I need to do.  If you need a Spybot S&D log, I can post that as well, just let me know.

This is an extension of a topic/thread
I posted a few months ago.  So you may want to read it again, before making replies here, although warning -- it's long.  And partly because it's so long, and partly because the problem has evolved, I'm started a new topic here.

So back then, I had suddenly been unable to download .exe files whenever I wanted.  After many tries (~10) I could get one downloaded, but then it wouldn't open (or it would be corrupted).  Please see the above mentioned thread for the long story.  But the short version is that after much help from some wonderful LzD members, as well as MS Tech Support, we determined that there was some sort of problem with permissions, and that I wasn't getting admin permissions, even though it's an admin account.  Both MS and LzD members agreed on this "diagnosis".  But we weren't able to reset the permissions....or well, more precisely, we weren't able to solve the problem by resetting permissions.  However, we found that a newly created admin account did not share the same problems.  So everyone agreed that it would be best for me to just set up a new admin account, abandon this one (the original one) and delete it.

Because of some health issues, I still have not completely readied the new admin account, with all my personal settings and all.  But I've been chipping away at it little by little.  A week or so ago, I downloaded Funkytoad's Zoned Out, from the new admin account, for use in the new account.  And last night I installed it, with not the slightest problem.  I was happy  :)

Today I've worked on getting my Security/Web Content Zones set up with all the many personalized settings I've been using for the Internet, Trusted and Restricted Zones.  And having populated the Restricted Zone using Zoned Out last night, I set about to populate my Trusted Zone today, as well.

Now there's a side story here, where some LzD members have warned me about using the Trusted Zone, and suggested I not use it.  And as I said in the original topic, I have taken that advice to heart, and do plan to make some changes in my security setup, and stop using the Trusted Zone.  But partly because of my health, and partly because I'm learning all this stuff as I go -- I don't like to make too many changes all at once (because something always goes wrong, and if I've made several changes, I don't know which one is the culprit).  So again I'll repeat that I DO plan to stop using the Trusted Zone.  And as you read on, you'll see that it may well be time to do it now.

So I just now finished with the Custom Level settings for my 3 zones, in the new admin account, and then I put in all my Trusted Zone sites.  Next I was going to open my new Zoned Out, to learn more about it, and make sure I had set it up right.  And darned if I didn't get the EXACT SAME error message I've been getting in the old (original) admin account! 

  Then I went online, and tried to download it again, AND GOT THE EXACT SAME ERROR MESSAGE about security settings not allowing the download.  Even though a short week ago, I actually did download it successfully from the new account, and successfully installed it last night.

Well, while it may seem a bit odd that I've taken so long to get the new admin user account set up, one step at a time, now it appears to be a blessing!  Because everything in the new admin account was working perfectly well last night.  Yet after putting in all my Custom Level settings for all 3 Zones, and populating the Trusted Zone, I have the exact same problem as with the old (original) admin account, today.  This can only mean ONE thing -- the problem lies either in the Custom Level settings, or the Trusted Zone Sites!

So here are my questions:
1 - Could there be some individual or combination of settings that is causing this problem?  (Ironically this was my 1st suspicion, but I deferred to all your very knowledgeable professionals' thoughts.)
2 - Could it be one or more of the settings that are new to IE 7, since I had not had IE 7 for very long b4 this problem started?
3 - Is it possible to have too many sites in the Trusted Zone?  I wouldn't think so, since the Restricted Zone has hundreds and hundreds of sites.  Or could there possibly be some combined total (Trusted + Restricted) sites limit?
4 - It couldn't be any individual site that I have in my Trusted Zone, could it?  I don't really see how, but then I'm certainly no expert.

At this point, to me, evidence is pointing to the Custom Level settings.  By chance, would anyone be interested in using my settings in their own IE 7 and trying to download something?  Or maybe I should contact someone familiar with "locking down IE" since that's basically what I've done with my settings?

Security Software Programs / Q about IE-SpyAd Restricted Sites

Hi Friends,
Is it possible to find out exactly what about a website has caused IE-SpyAd to place it in the Restricted Zone?

I know that in most cases one can safely find elsewhere what one might want from a Restricted Site.  But I have a situation where a quite reputable organization, is using the services of a website which IE-SpyAd has put in my Restricted Zone, to build and manage its mailing list.  I very much want to be on the mailing list of this organization, but don't want to submit my email address to a Restricted Site.  I HAVE notified the organization that the service they're using (don't know whether they pay for the service or not) has a bad reputation, and have given them links to the various anti-spyware software which puts sites into the Restricted Zone, so they might look into it, and learn more about it.  But I haven't been able to tell them exactly what the site does that is so bad.  And despite my notification about it, they haven't stopped using this Restricted Site.  So I'm thinking maybe if I can tell them specifically what the site does wrong, maybe they'll be motivated to change their system.  OR maybe the mailing list management has nothing to do with their restricted status, so that maybe it's safe to submit my email address.

So my question -- Is there any way to find out exactly what has caused IE-SpyAd (and/or other software) to put a site into the Restricted Zone?
