Late at night on the computer an update schedule prompt came up.  So I okay'd and went to bed.  Still updating in the morning  so had lunch, took a stray cat to Humane Society, cleaned out some junk and took it to Value Village.  About 7 pm still updating , I need my computer so I took a chance and turned it off and back on again.  still updating. This was all taking place at 95%.  Did it again on and off and it put back old window copy thank goodness.

should I have let it run, it was at 95% for hours and hours? I assumed something was wrong.  Should I have let it keep going for more hours, I was at about 22 hours. It is prompting gain for an update.

I have been trying to find out what the end game is on Facebook like farming.  They must be aware of the scamming/spamming going on and apparently Facebook is to blame, not exactly sure how, but the value of the pages seem to increase with more likes and shares, even if fraudulently obtained.

Typical spamming includes a downs syndrome child who nobody says is beautiful or nobody comes to her party, and you have to like and type amen. Or a veteran in a nursing home that did not receive birthday wishes, like and wish happy birthday. Type yes if you support the troops.  Type yes if you support Donald Trump.  Type yes if don't support Donald Trump. Type yes if you hate cancer. Type in the name of your dead dad if you love him. Exorbitant contests like expensive cars that you have to like the page and type in the color you want to win, open box ipads and motor homes they are never awarded. . I have had to stop the sharing of a couple of friends because they literally fill my news feed with this drivel.

Facebook must be aware of all the scamming going on.  My guess is there is money in it somewhere for Facebook, maybe advertisers are pedaled high usage rating because of all this junk activity.  I have not found out what the money is in for these like farmers, or there must be a pay off of some sort.

Analysis and Malware Removal / slow computer, Quick Access crashes
« on: March 26, 2017, 03:25:22 PM »
My computer sometimes slows to a crawl and acts like it is windows 98 with a free dialup plan. A panel sometimes appears saying Quick Access has stopped working and gives the option of closing the program.  The resources always seem to be being used even when I am not doing anything.  Surely somethings are running in the background that could be removed.  This computer used to be great, I think it is supposed to be a quad core.  It is now ready for the scrap as it i unusable half the time.  Occasionally it seems to work passably like now as I have just rebooted it and have one browser open and just two tabs.  Any help appreciated.  Logs to follow.

I fished a nice laptop out of the garbage (I know, I know), and the hard drive does not seem to fire up.  I should be able to get a hard drive from the local electronic recycler, or even a cheap new one would be worth it, has one for about 50 bucks.  Problem is the licence sticker is pretty much rubbed out not on purpose but normal wear, so I though I might dip my toes into Linux.  It was manufactured in around 2010, has a 250 GB hard drive and 2 GB of RAM.  It has a nice 15.6 inch screen and is very similar to my own newer Acer Aspire which I bought in around 2004.  I have not had the back off yet so it might have more problems, but in the meantime I thought I would decide on what to put on it, I suspect any info on it is not recoverable without one of those forensic places costing thousands of dollars.

Any recommendations on which one I should install, never having used Linux before?

Meet & Greet! / orillia3

Thanks for the welcomes.  I will chat here instead of the malwares thread.  I have not been around, too busy doing contests and lobbying for acceptance of ebikes.  Since there is no longer any expectation of free dialup, or any free hi speed, a long time ago I went pay, then hi speed.  I am not even sure modern computers tolerate dialup at all.  I had a bout of prostate cancer, seems to be in remission after taking it out and radiation, and a recurrence of some skin cancer, thankfully not the agressive kind, but left a huge scar on my nose after Moh's surgery.  Lost my mom who passed away in '08, the year I was doing radiation, that was not a good year all around.  Right now I am just trying to stay under the radar, trying to make ends meet like most people, on a meagre pension.  Finally got too old for ODSP and graduated to old age pension, not much better really, except do not have to justify my existence to some unsympathetic beuracrats who continually act as if I was going to suddenly get better.  Could use a lottery win, but then so could we all I suppose, get tired of pinching pennies, although Canada got rid of those, so not sure what I am pinching now.

Analysis and Malware Removal / HP Compaq Windows 7 netbook slow
« on: September 10, 2015, 04:57:57 PM »
My newer 8.1 laptop has slowed to a crawl at times eventually want to impose on your generosity and have a look at it.  In the meantime I would like to use my backup netbook, but it is slow too.  I updated the RAM to maximum and used ReadyBoost to stop it from stalling altogether.  It is barely acceptable. I am sure there is all kinds of junk I don't need running in the background, and maybe some sort of junk picked up from the internet.  I will appreciate you taking a look at the netbook first.  Will post logs as per instructions shortly.

I just uninstalled and reinstalled a new copy of HP Network Assistant as I was getting error messages about that that would not resolve.  I have been putting up with that since new and finally did something about it, more of an annoyance than anything else.  Hopefully that problem has been fixed.

Computer Problems, Questions and Solutions! / CBT Locker
« on: June 12, 2015, 08:22:53 PM »
A friend of mine reports she has been hit with CBT-Locker and all her files are encrypted.  The repair shop tried but cannot help her.  She is considering paying the ransom.  What can be done, and should she pay?
