I always clicked the "photos" tile to view my photos.  Then I noticed the photos were not in the usual "thumbnails" format with my title below each one or the IMG number.  They are larger and have no titles or "IMG," just larger photos, different sizes.   So I found "pictures" on the computer and made a tile for that because when I click on that I get the photos back in the preferable tile format.

Can someone explain to me what's going on with this?

Analysis and Malware Removal / Windows Command Processor??
« on: December 09, 2016, 03:35:07 PM »
Good morning everyone!

Recurring pop-up box from WinPatrol that a new automatic startup program has been detected and do I want it? "Windows Command Processor"

I click the rejection button, but the pop-up has continued a few times over a period of 4-5 days.  I don't think I have a problem but assume this is not legitimate, right?

Analysis and Malware Removal / "a serious malfunction has been detected"
« on: October 01, 2016, 07:01:36 PM »
The "serious malfunction" box popped up with the 800-number and obnoxious and beeping sound. I had to shut down the computer because I couldn't get the box close or do anything else. I did not want to press the X to try to close the window. On rebooting I ran malware bites, and no threats were found, but I still Cannot use the computer because the window pops up and blocks me from doing anything even though I could run Malwarebytes. I'm using my iPad.

When I LEFT click the start button, nothing comes up.  RIGHT clicking gives me some options in a black window--shut down, file explorer, settings, etc.

Someone else was using the computer this weekend and might have done an update, not sure.

Analysis and Malware Removal / "Contact Microsoft" popup
« on: March 25, 2016, 04:47:20 PM »
I must have made an error typing in a website and got a pop up window "Windows detected suspicious activity on your computer."  I'm to contact them at a toll free 844 number. I tried to post a picture of the popup taken with iPhone but it must have been in an unacceptable format because I could not get it to post.

My mistake was that I wanted to download Microsoft game mah-jongg on the computer.  I had to establish a Microsoft account so OK I jumped through all their hoops, made a password, used my secondary email address.

This morning when I tried  to log in I noticed it wasn't my usual log in but cited my secondary email address and asked for the password which did not work.  As recommended I went to Microsoft's password reset on the iPad and jumped through hoops again, and they will get back to me within 24 hours. Ridiculous! All this for a game, and now I'm locked out of my computer.

I would like to completely back out of this.  If no suggestions here, I'll just wait to hear from Microsoft.  I probably made a mistake somewhere but this is so annoying.

Computer Problems, Questions and Solutions! / Need Anti-virus help
« on: September 17, 2015, 05:20:16 PM »
I've used AVG free for years.  Recently got a virus and took machine to be fixed.  On return I noticed AVG is gone and Avast in its place.  The computer shop likes Avast better and so made the the change.  Carbonite says it doesn't work well with Avast so I uninstalled it thinking I had Microsoft Security Essentials, but if MSE is there I cannot find it!

I think I have no protection now and not sure which way to go.  Have Windows 10 and am still fumbling around to find out where everything is.

Thanks for any help.  Not sure which way to go.

Good morning everyone!

Just ran the Secunia scan and it shows Adobe Shockwave Player and Oracle Java JRE out of date.  Greyed out letters under their icons say "updating."  Are they really updating?  Seems like nothing is happening.  Do I need to seek out the updates myself?

Also, it shows Mozilla T-bird as out of date, and I don't believe it is.  Clicking the link takes me to a page where I can download Firefox.

Thank you.

I would like to email a pdf to my Kindle.  I have the email addy but cannot figure out how to send the document.  As an attachment?  I don't see an option to do that when opening the pdf.

To update Adobe Shockwave Player I found my way to but there is no place to update, just to "agree and install now."  If I click that, will it just update?

Is there a way to set this for automatic updates?

Thank you.

This morning is the first boot-up after installing WinPatrol, and Scotty has alerted me to "Intel(R) Common User Interface" igfxdev.dll

"This program could slow your computer by running in the background.  Was this program expected and something you want active all the time?"

I really don't have any idea whether to Accept or Reject change.  Help?!

Analysis and Malware Removal / Malwarebytes just runs and runs
« on: May 28, 2013, 01:26:00 PM »
We did the disk clean-up on the computer, ran the AVG-free check which revealed and removed 3 threats, then ran Malawarebytes which ran over 3 hours and never stopped.  I think something is up with the computer but not sure what.  Why would Malawarebytes run and not stop?  Also the AVG scan took a long time too.

I was trying to download Secunia PSI 3.0 and wound up with Snap Do. No sign of Secunia.  I uninstalled Snap Do but still have it as a browser even when I click the IE icon.

I did this through and maybe clicked the wrong button.

Phishing, Spam and Hoaxes / Is this a legitimate update?
« on: September 06, 2012, 01:42:23 PM »
I keep getting a popup window "A program needs your permission to continue.  If you started this program, continue.

Oracle America, Inc.

It has the little cup of coffee icon.

I didn't start this update, but maybe it's automatic.  I'm cautious about these updates having been fooled once before.

How do I know if this is ok?

Also, what's the name of that program which checks your computer to see if all programs are fully updated?  I think it's the little Scotty dog one?  I had it but my son removed it, and I'd like to get it back.

Internet / Question about favorites on IE9
« on: May 24, 2012, 02:20:53 PM »
On the drop-down favorites bar list, I have 10 "Favorites Bar" listings.  Only 7 appear on the horizontal bar.  In particular, I would like on the bar, but when I drag the icon it just won't "stick."

Thank you.
