Web News / Norton Warning About New Global Ransomware Attack - "Petya"
« on: August 02, 2017, 12:31:42 AM »
August 2nd, and I just received a notice from my Norton account that there is a new global ransomware attack called "Petya". I may have missed it, yet has this already been discussed here at LD? Anything extra we should know/worry about?

Security Software Programs / Malware question : redux
« on: October 04, 2016, 01:49:45 AM »
In a thread by DevDream (recently closed) regarding malware infecting Macs, Pete! (thanks Pete!) posted the following link to an interesting related 2012 InfoWorld article:
http://www.infoworld.com/article/2617132/mac-os-x/why-mac-users-should-care-about-windows-malware.html

In that article, the author states:

"What's more, Mac machines aren't entirely immune to Windows malware if they're, say, running Parallels. "When you run Parallels, or any virtual machine software that runs a full copy of Windows, it's just like you're running Windows when you're in that VM, and all the same rules apply..."

What I found frustrating is that the author goes on to state "In other words, it would behoove Mac users to start taking necessary precaution to better protect their machines...", yet fails to illustrate what those necessary precautions are. Avoiding malicious websites? Opening SPAM and clicking links? A Mac-specific malware program?

I currently run a MacBook at home loaded with "Office for Mac". I thought about (and am still thinking about) running a second Mac with a full Windows OS loaded as a second OS via Bootcamp. Do I also need to run Parallels? Office for Mac, although "glitchy" compared with running Office on my Windows 7 machine, is fine, yet I thought that maybe I would help myself by purchasing and loading (again, via Bootcamp) a full Windows OS on the Mac.

Does anyone here have experience with running Windows on a Mac via Bootcamp? And if so, what are the potential pitfalls, malware and virus wise, or otherwise? I run a business from that MacBook, so it's vital that I keep it squeaky clean. I'm not sure if it's just "bloatware", yet I installed Malwarebytes for Mac a few months back, mostly out of curiosity. I run it from time to time, yet it never finds anything, which means that either A) my Mac is clean or B) the malware hides really good (hoping the answer is A).

Anyway, all thoughts and advice most greatly appreciated!

Ps; I only post at this forum. My schedule's too busy to be doing "shotgun" blasts.  ;)

Fired up my laptop this morning, and after logging in Microsoft grabbed my entire screen (ENTIRE SCREEN!) with a warming message that said "Sorry to bother you, but July 29 is quickly approaching....".

Talk about annoying! It was bad enough that the small 2 x 2 inch reminder was repeatedly popping up, but now they grab the whole screen?? Amazing. I wanted to write back "Yes, you are f*#king bothering me!"

Watching the news lately, I think that this is all a master plan by MS to ultimately force paid yearly OS subscription services down our throats. Very sneaky! Yet, very capitalistic. When computer and software sales go down, boost your bottom line (and quarterly earnings) by forcing paid OS subscriptions on your current users.

Much the same as outsourcing the manufacturing of Levis, and everything else. When the market is saturated, and the investors start getting edgy about the dropping quarterly earnings, ship the manufacturing offshore to $2 per day laborers to boost the bottom line.

OK, my rant is over, but I DON'T LIKE BEING FORCE FED by MS, or anyone else. Look out MS OS users, I'll bet that it's coming!

With the MS deadline looming for the end of the free upgrade offer, I'm interested to learn if any members here have delayed upgrading to Windows 10, and why.

I'm still running Windows 7, and am very satisfied with it. MS recently stated that they will charge a free for the upgrade in a few months, so now I'm finally thinking about doing the upgrade. However, other than continued MS support, is Windows 10 a real improvement over Windows 7? Any big headaches for those of you who have already upgraded?

I think that I read recently that for those that DO upgrade to Windows 10, MS will start charging a yearly fee to use it. Is that true, or just nonsense?

Anyway, I thought no better place to ask this question than here at good 'ol LandzDown. Very interested to hear some opinions to help me decide.

Thanks!

LandzDown Lounge / Looking to lose a few (or many) pounds?
« on: February 03, 2016, 02:15:56 AM »
Try this diet. No exercise needed.

Always consult your doctor first, yet for optimal results, no sugar, no fat, and no alcohol. After 1-2 weeks of eating 5 times per day (last meal at 10:00 PM is fine), your body quickly realizes that it is being "regularly" fed. Thus, it no longer "stores" calories as fat for reserve, and your metabolism naturally speeds up.

6:00 AM: 1 cup of natural boiled oats (oatmeal), with a little orange juice and banana if desired.
10:00 AM: High-protein powdered meal replacement (pro bodybuilder type, not the "lose-fast" nonsense from a drug store). Mix with orange juice, grapefruit juice, or water.
2:00 PM: 1/2 chicken breast (no fat), broccoli, and 1/2 sweet potato (the most complex form of carbohydrates).
6:00 PM: Again, high-protein pro meal replacement mix.
10:00 PM: Again, 1/2 chicken and broccoli (yet this time no sweet potato).

After your body wakes up, you'll be losing 1 pound+ per day on average. Ask me how I know!

Diet given to me 17 years ago by a pro body builder (Arnold Schwarzenegger competition posing type) in LA. One month before the posing competition, it's the diet that they all do to get down to "zero" fat (veins popping look). Of course, they don't have much fat to begin with anyway. Don't forget! No "Twinkies"!  ;)

Hi everyone. I hope that someone can help me. I've been using Pale Moon as my primary go-to browser for quite some time now, and have been very happy with it. I also have IE (hardly ever use), Seamonkey (NEVER use), and Firefox (now using) installed.

A few days ago, I downloaded the current update for the PM browser. Suddenly, it basically stopped working. When I click on any of my favorites (the "Most Visited" sites sitting in the menu bar (task bar?, I forget what it's called), the little PM circle starts spinning yet never opens the site. After a while, a message pops up saying something like "Timed Out" or "Cant Access the site right now". I think it maybe even said something like "Maybe your administrator doesn't allow this browser", which I thought was odd. Basically, the browser just hangs.

I did notice that all the sites addresses were somehow changed to "http" instead of "https". Anyway, I haven't a clue as to why PM suddenly started acting up. I thought about trashing PM and just downloading a fresh version, as maybe that would help. However, I have many bookmarks and other data saved that I do not wish to lose.

Currently typing this post using the Firefox browser (which seems to be working OK).

Any suggestions? I really like using PM and would like to sort it out.

Thanks in advance!

John

My apologies if this has been posted elsewhere, and in fact, it's not that important. Just thought I'd mention that starting this morning, along with the ever-present white Windows 10 "taskbar" icon stating "Get Windows 10" and the Windows Update reminder, now a pop-up appears when I fire-up my box (capture image attached).

I have yet to reserve my copy, but found it interesting that MS is getting this pushy. Personally, still waiting for the dust to settle before I seriously contemplate upgrading from Windows 7 to 10.

Again, not so important. Just sharing.

Web News / Yahoo Tech finally red-flags Adobe Flash
« on: July 16, 2015, 12:50:40 AM »
"What is Adobe Flash, and How Can You Get Rid of It." (Yahoo Tech article):

https://www.yahoo.com/tech/what-is-adobe-flash-and-how-can-you-get-rid-of-124087958879.html

Surprised it took them this long to notice the Flash-associated exploit vulnerability. It's certainly not news here.

LandzDown Lounge / Dr. Richard Stallman on free software
« on: January 02, 2015, 04:23:48 AM »
For those of you who might be interested, I found this 2009 lecture by Dr. Richard Stallman quite interesting.
Being the developer of GNU/Linux circa '84, he is speaking at the University of Calgary in 2009 about the
concept of free software, and throws in his viewpoints on MS OS, Mac OS, copyrights, peer-to-peer sharing, etc.
Being an ex pro musician, his thoughts on artist compensation (starting around 53:00) were of particular interest to me.

Personally, I know absolutely nothing about source code, yet I still found this lecture quite captivating. Gotta run now and check my back door. I feel a draft.

Computer Problems, Questions and Solutions! / Office Online Questions
« on: September 19, 2014, 03:37:36 AM »
Corrine, I use MS Office every day, for both my 9-5 and private editing businesses. Does Office Online work with my iPhone? Many times I'm away from my laptops and receive an e-mail to my iPhone (I actually have 5 mail accounts linked to the phone) for my private business with an attached MS Word or PPT doc. Currently, I have to wait till I'm home on one of my laptops to do the actual editing, then attach the edited file in a return mail. It would be amazingly wonderful if, for example, I could edit simple Word docs (if PPT files also, great!) on my iPhone, save the edited file, and then attach it to my return mail. All from my iPhone.

Is that possible with Office Online?

I can read MS Word and PPT files sent via e-mail attachments on my iPhone, yet it would be great to be able to do editing jobs while away from home; e.g., while sitting at a restaurant, a lounge, or riding the bullet train, etc., and send the edited file as a real MS Office file attached to my reply.

General Software News, Updates & Discussions / Paint.NET
« on: July 26, 2014, 01:59:22 AM »

Just a quick side note for anyone (like myself) who currently has Paint.NET installed, if you open it running as administrator (maybe not necessary), a window will pop up informing you of the update and providing a "click to install" button. Just thought I'd throw that out for anyone interested.

Ahhh. The 'Dillo. It was a "rocking-good" hall, and fun drinking margaritas there in '79. Frank and Terry. I'm feeling kind of like a muffin today.

Analysis and Malware Removal / Is JAVA gone? ... and general check-up
« on: July 18, 2014, 12:05:45 AM »
Hi Corrine,

As mentioned in my reply to your post regarding JAVA, would you please check these logs to verify that JAVA is now gone from my computer, as well as to let me know if everything else looks on the up-and-up? I know you're busy, so no rush. My computers have never run better than since following your advice here at Landzdown.

By the way, I noticed that the second DDS file states that there is no system restore point saved on this computer. Is that a mistake? I routinely make restore points.

Anyway, here are the three log files:

For a few weeks now, and since installing CryptoPrevent, WinPatrol repeatedly flashes me alerts to file type changes (.PIF and .SCR)

"Scotty the WinPatrol Watchdog hads detected a change to one of your file type associates. .PIF

The program currently used for this file type is
Company name (none) -  %1 %*

A change has been made to use the following program for this file type:
CryptoPrevent
C:\Program Files (x86)\Foolish IT\CryptoPrevent\CryptoPreventFilterMod.exe *%1 %*"

As soon as I click accept (assuming it is the legitimate CryptoPrevent change), a second WinPatrol window pops up warning
about a .SCR file change. My apologies, yet I just quickly clicked "accept change", yet the new file type is Filter Mod %1 /S %*,
yet I didn't write down what the original file type was. I should also note that at first, I clicked "do not accept change" for both file type changes in the Scotty window, yet after a few minutes the the warning windows reappear, as I did not checkmark the "do not notify again about this file type change".

Anyway, can someone please explain to me if this change is OK?

One more thing, when I run MalwareBytes (newest version and definitions) with "scan for rootkits" also checked, it finds two bugs
associated/called "Broken.OpenCommand". These two bugs might be false positives (or not) from what I have read at other sites, and when I had MalwareBytes quarantine/delete them, the above-described WinPatrol ALERT windows suddenly appeared again.

With ALL of that aside, it might just be that I have too many various security/cleaning programs on this machine and they might be conflicting with one another and fighting for control, thus causing problems.

Currently installed (mostly due to my paranoia and posts here at Landzdown):

Norton 360 (full time protection / firewall)
WinPatrol (Newest Free Version)
MalwareBytes Anti-Malware (Newest Free Edition)
MalwareBytes Anti-Exploit (Newest Free Edition)
SuperAntiSpyware (Newest Free Edition)
SpywareBlaster (Updated Free)
CCleaner (Updated Free)
CryptoPrevent (Updated Version)
AdwCleaner (Newest Release)

Hi Everyone,

I have a 2010 Sony Vaio laptop running Windows 7 (64 bit) and Office Professional 2007. My memory is a bit faulty, yet when I first got this computer and installed Office Pro '07 I kind of remember that MS was about to release Office Pro 2010 and would honor a free upgrade when available as long as I had the product key for '07.

Does anyone know if that offer from MS is still valid? Was there a time limit? I have the Office Pro '07 disc(s?) at home somewhere. Haven't seen them in years, but they're there. Has that ship sailed?

All help / advice greatly appreciated.

John
