For some reason, preview is not working.
Let's try some different browsers.
Well today it worked!

Internet / Firefox ESR update
« on: July 13, 2021, 12:44:38 PM »
I was offered an update this morning. My version is now 78.12. I'm not sure what the regular FF version is and if there was a recent update.

I am in the process of switching from Palemoon to Firefox.
Palemoon has me logged in here when I click the bookmark but Firefox refuses to.
I have the site whitelisted. I have a cookie protected. In fact it doesn't expire until 2027.
This is the only site that I have a problem with; all other sites behave normally.

Yesterday I removed my login credentials figuring I'd start from scratch. That did nothing; I still have to select the username, it then fills in the password and I'm finally in.

Anyone have a clue as to what else I can try?

Computer Problems, Questions and Solutions! / Outlook 365 help needed
« on: December 14, 2020, 04:38:39 PM »
First off, let me state I don't use Office 365 and I have never used Outlook so if you explain things please remember to "dumb it down" for this non-user.

I'm on the board of a very small Credit Union. We have 5 part time Office workers. Each person has his or her own computer.  We also have a server. The computers are new (perhaps purchased in April)  running Windows 10 and also Office 365 with Outlook. Everyone has an email address like this: first letter of first name followed by last name at name of credit union dot org.  (jdoe@creditunion.org)
One person out of the 5 is unable to receive emails. I sent one last night and it bounced then I remembered she can send and things can be forwarded to her but new email can't be received. (I only learned of this problem in late November). We have no IT person so since I know slightly more than the 5 users, I'm going to see if I can fix this.
I'm not sure if this is relevant but the person who can't receive email doesn't own a personal computer.  She has never owned one.

Also we have contracts with two different companies. One company makes sure the computers are patched and checks monthly and sends us a report. Another company does vulnerability testing monthly and sends us a report. So basically all 5 computers are pretty much alike.

What settings do I look at to see why she can't receive emails?

Security Software Programs / SpywareBlaster questions
« on: November 01, 2020, 02:11:13 PM »
I just did the Oct 31st 2020 update. This is on a Windows 7 computer. It reported 15 new items and yet it reports 18,400 items.
I'm almost positive I have activex turned off in IE. About the only time I fire IE up is to test a site for someone having problems and posting in a forum.
I'm just wondering why it didn't report the 6 IE items.

I look again because I have 3 other computers to update.

I don't have Edge installed. I can't see the point since my days of surfing in Windows 7 are winding down. So I wonder why it is protecting a browser I don't have installed.

Internet / Questions about MyPal browser
« on: August 17, 2020, 02:54:14 PM »
I figured I'd try MyPal on one Windows 7 computer. It is supposed to be based on the old version of Firefox. Mine however seems to draw all the information from Palemoon, which doesn't help me. When I went to get addons, it takes me to Palemoon's offerings which are not extensive.

1. How do I install extensions that don't work in Palemoon but did work in the old versions of Firefox? (noscript and https everywhere)
I do have the old extensions archived and I guess I can drag them into the extensions folder.

2. How do I install plugins that Palemoon doesn't include but Firefox did? Specifically so I can playback videos, some DRM that are offered free on YouTube.

Computer Problems, Questions and Solutions! / Login Win 10
« on: May 06, 2020, 02:44:27 PM »
I don't run Win 10 but I was reading this article
https://www.askwoody.com/2020/patch-lady-can-you-set-up-a-local-no-microsoft-account-on-2004/
and brought to mind a question or two.
1. Most of the people I know don't read the fine print so they wouldn't bother reading about setting up a local account. If the internet is down at their home, does that mean they can't login on a Win 10 computer? Is the computer then unusable until they can log in?
2. If you have a MS account, is it possible to create a local account and use that instead?
(one of my friends has really, really slow dsl and I'm wondering how long it takes her to login with a MS account)

I can't get Palemoon to play some YouTube videos. I want to see if the fault is all 4 Windows 7 computers in our home or actually that Palemoon can't handle some html5. (I can fire up Vivldi or Firefox and have no problem but I'd like to get Palemoon working.)

I've been posting on the Palemoon forum and first he blamed an addon. I fired up Palemoon in safemode with no addons and I created a new profile. In both cases I see the same error. Now he is blaming it on a plugin VLC Web Plugin. Since a plugin is impossible to remove (it can probably be removed but it might break things), I did the next best thing and disabled it. And still the same error shows.

This is the video, a free movie on YouTube with ads

Post Yes, if the video starts.
Post No if you see the following error "Your browser currently does not recognize any of the formats currently available. Click to visit our frequently asked questions about HTML5 video". When I click to get to HTML5, I get this - which is no help at all.

Four Windows 7 computers all up to date as far as Dec. 2019.
Starting recently, if I had to guess I'd say in the past week, when I insert a USB device (stick or portable hard drive), I get the icon appearing in the tray.
When I right click and select to remove it, the icon disappears but I no longer get the balloon that tells me it is now safe to remove. This occurs in the two computers that are running 32 bit, one is Home and the other is Pro. The two 64 bit computers still have the notification appearing.

Searching has been a big waste of time:
1. The icon has not disappeared. Most of the fixes are for getting the USB icon to appear. The icon appears in all the computers when I insert a USB device.
2. Fixes I see direct you to regedit and this location
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Notification\Settings\Microsoft.Explorer.Notification.
Since this is for Windows 10, I'm not sure if missing this key is the problem or because I'm on Windows 7.
I am okay as far as HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
but there is no Notification when CurrentVersion is expanded. This is true for all Win 7 computers so I suspect Win 7 doesn't have this key.
3. Yes, I've checked in Customize for the tray icons and it is set correctly. (see attachment)

When I go to Computer, right click and select eject from there, the notification does appear.

Any thoughts on why the 32 bit computers suddenly lost the "it is now safe to remove" notification?

Jokes / Password troubles
« on: January 10, 2020, 03:19:39 PM »
A worker hears a blonde (I apologize to all the blondes in the audience) in the next cubicle sigh. He says, "Do you need some help?". "Yes, I can't get my password typed in". He asks, "What do you want as your password?".

She says: Mickey, Minnie, Popeye, Donald, Huey, Dewey, Louie, New York, Seattle, and Sacramento.
He says: Why pick a password that long?
She says: Well it says I need 7 characters and 3 capitals!

Internet / SpeedyFox
« on: December 23, 2019, 02:22:03 PM »
I switched to Palemoon as my daily brower (in Windows) because FF is soooo slow.
I saw this program, SpeedyFox, https://www.majorgeeks.com/content/page/how_to_speed_up_your_firefoxchrome_or_safari_browser.html
and I've downloaded it but haven't unzipped it.
Here is the developer's site https://www.crystalidea.com/speedyfox
Has anyone tried it?
I'm one that prefers to do my own manual changes and not have a program do some unknown tweaks therefore I'm hesitant to try it.

Internet / Exploit in newest FF version
« on: November 06, 2019, 01:24:17 PM »
Don't be fooled by a message box that pops up in FF and tells you that you are running a pirated copy of Windows.
Don't call the number displayed.

Computer Problems, Questions and Solutions! / Old dog - new trick
« on: August 11, 2019, 04:13:01 PM »
There is a saying in the US, that you can't teach an old dog new tricks.
This old dog learned a new trick and so did her husband!

My husband is on the Zoning Board and gets attachments with files for the upcoming hearings. Lately he has been getting the attachment as a winmail.dat file.
I spent time trying to find out what this was. Apparently it comes from a malformed Outlook account. We don't have Outlook and haven't downloaded email to our computers in 20 years.
My husband did inform the officer that he can't open the attachment he sends. That got him nowhere.

The two previous months I went to a website, uploaded the file and the site converted the attachment into its pdf and jpeg components. I then had to put them into a folder, put the folder on a USB stick and place the folder on my husband's computer. That gets tiresome if you have to do this each month or oftener.

Last night I went searching for a program that could open winmail.dat files. I found two. I downloaded the first one (from 2011). It was small and seemed easy to use from the screenshot. Ah, it works. My husband has 2 ways to open these files: a) right click and select open with Winmail Reader or b) open the program from the shortcut and drag the file into the left pane.

Program he is now using: https://www.winmail-dat.com
