Security Alerts & Briefings / Ad Blocking
« on: January 17, 2019, 04:09:41 PM »
For some reason I added Superblock and AdBlock Plus to Chrome.  I don't remember why and I would like to remove one of them.  They seem pretty much duplicate.
I am also wondering if there is something better out there.

Computer Problems, Questions and Solutions! / My Documents?
« on: October 10, 2018, 02:43:55 PM »
I run Windows 7 Professional 64bit. My wife has the Home version. I started looking at the My Documents file when a word document we both saved came back empty after shutdown.
In looking at her Save As screen I noticed it had 2 references.  This started me looking for My Documents where it should have been saved.  Not only did it come back empty, but in many places.
Question: I discovered many My Documents on my machine. They come in pairs with 1 accessible and 1 Not accessible. Libraries, My userid, 2 other userids, D: drive has 1 that is pointed to by some of the other My Documents that come up in properties/Location.
What are all these for?  Why is one in the set Not Accessible?
Thanks as always

Computer Problems, Questions and Solutions! / Reading CBS?
« on: October 04, 2018, 03:57:48 PM »
There was an application that would read one of the huge files created when running Maintenance. I believe it was the CBS file.  I can no longer remember or find it.

Computer Problems, Questions and Solutions! / Register Question
« on: June 16, 2018, 02:41:28 PM »
A few years ago I managed to install Silverlight and Adobe Flash Player 11 Activex( I now have 29).  Neither one of them point to a file on C:. Recently I ran Wise Registry Cleaner and CCleaner(which I have used for years) and System Essentials and  I expected one of them to clean up the Register as the programs CAN'T be removed from the control panel.  I know that I could use Regedit and find the entries and delete from there, but I wonder why there is no program the realizes the entries don't point to an application.

Has anyone use the System Tuneup application in this program?  I have Windows 7 Professional 64bit.  There are 33 items that are not Optimized.  There is an option that says System Default, which I assume returns those items back to the current defaults.
I can't find information about the applications also.

I found the Windows Experience Index while looking around. 2 of the 5 items were 7.5 and 2 were 7.9 and the Disk Transfer Rate was 6.9.
My Primary Drive is KINGSTON SNVP325S2128GB ATA Device (SSD).

It has an H: sector of 100mb which is at 99mb. The C: is 52gb used of 119gb.

Why should Transfer Rate be so out of line?

Any suggestions?

I received a reply on SysNative "I use HD Sentinel to check whether trim is really active"  The referenced program that is supposed to check this "Hard Disk Sentinel" didn't seem free and seemed old.

Is it true Trim Enable does not mean it is executing on the SSD?

Computer Problems, Questions and Solutions! / Skype on Ipad
« on: December 28, 2017, 03:45:22 PM »
I have used Skype on an Ipad with Ios 9.3.5. For some reason I lost connection. Contacting Skype Support they had me delete it. Then went to the App's Store and it did not have a GET selection. Somehow I also got the information App's no longer had "SKYPE ON IPAD"

Any ideas on what is wrong?  Any solutions.  We don't use Skype very often. WE DO USE IT TO SEE OUR GRANDDAUGHTER.

Computer Problems, Questions and Solutions! / Macrium Reflect Free
« on: November 01, 2017, 03:45:16 PM »
I installed Version 7.1.2642.  I then created a Boot Flash Drive.  The instructions say to test the boot capabilities. I inserted the flash drive and booted the system.
Question: How do you verify it started from Macrium_PE? I checked the boot sequence and my SSD is the second choice.

Question: What is the difference between Clone and Backup?  Which is better on a Home computer?

It is to bad the free version does not allow you into the Forum.

Security Software Programs / Malwarebytes & Microsoft Security Essentials
« on: September 09, 2017, 02:58:26 PM »
I run Malwarebytes 3.1.2. I also run Microsoft Security Essentials
I had to turn off Web Protection in Malwarebytes as I suddenly took MANY minutes for "Resolve DNS" to complete in Chrome.  This also occurred after running CCleaner. TWEAKING.COM helped with the repair, I think.
Has anyone else run into this conflict?  I also unchecked Chrome Cookies in CCleaner.
Cookies cleanup is another issue I have.
I run Windows 7 Professional 64bit.

I have Malwarebytes Premium 3.0 with full protection.  I also have Windows Security Essentials turned on.
Question: Are there any conflicts?  Would having both turned on cause performance issues?

I run Windows 7 Professional 64bit with 12gb of memory and Intel 7 930

Computer Problems, Questions and Solutions! / Where Is It?
« on: April 05, 2017, 04:57:31 PM »
I have the following in Program and Features. They also show in REVO.  But Windows Explorer can't find them.  They are referenced in the Register with no relation to an application location.

Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x64 9.0.30729.4148   9.0.30729.4148   64-bit   12/1/2016
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x64 9.0.30729.6161   9.0.30729.6161   64-bit   3/15/2017
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 9.0.30729.6161   9.0.30729.6161   32-bit   3/15/2017
Microsoft Visual C++ 2010  x64 Redistributable - 10.0.40219   10.0.40219   64-bit   12/1/2016
Microsoft Visual C++ 2010  x86 Redistributable - 10.0.40219   10.0.40219   32-bit   12/1/2016
Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Redistributable (x86) - 11.0.61030   11.0.61030.0   32-bit   12/1/2016
Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable (x64) - 12.0.30501   12.0.30501.0   32-bit   12/1/2016
Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable (x86) - 12.0.30501   12.0.30501.0   32-bit   12/1/2016

I am trying to clean them up figuring if I can't find them then no application is using them.
I would like to hide them before deletion to be sure as there is no way to identify who uses an application.  I have done a backup.  Could I restore just an app if needed?

General Software News, Updates & Discussions / Windows Server ?
« on: March 24, 2017, 05:09:06 PM »
How can I find out what Windows Server Release I have installed.  I did find I have DHCP turned off.  So many updates refer to Server Releases. Specifically, today kb4012218 failed and refers to Server release 2003 as I recall.

Security Software Programs / Re: MVPS Hosts
« on: February 08, 2017, 06:45:37 PM »
I have installed HostsMan. I selected MVPS Hosts and HP Hosts(Ad and tracking servers only).
HP Hosts downloads as I changed to and checked for duplicates. I now have a file of 57,801 names. Over the last 2 weeks some IP accesses have slowed to a crawl.
Could there be a relationship between the Host file and them? Should I leave the HP Hosts alone when they are updated?  Should I ONLY download MVPS Hosts?
I run Windows 7 Professional 64bit on an Intel 930.

Security Software Programs / Penetration Testing
« on: February 07, 2017, 06:35:36 PM »
I run Microsoft Security Essentials, AVAST, CCleaner, Malwarebytes and to try and make sure my system is secure. I run on a TP-Link Router.
Does it make any sense for a home user to run Penetration Testing from Metasploit?
I hope it would be overkill, but in today's environment how can you be sure.
