Internet / opendns.com
« on: September 12, 2008, 04:03:50 AM »
ok everyone probably knows about it  but if not

dns is what takes landzdown.com and turns it into a ip address ( words to numbers)
your isp is the first DNS in the system
BUT not all ips's are the same!
remember about a month ago when that bug was found in dns servers that could take you to bad places
well open dns had theirs done
BUT when i ran the test on a neighbor's system ( att/yahoo) found one of their servers that was not patched and tried to alert them but "support" just didn't care

it is easy to change your DNS server, here is the easy way

https://www.opendns.com/smb/start/computer/

and if you wonder if "the net is slow" cause it takes a long time to "looking up" well you just enter this in your address bar and you can check on the status of all there servers ;-D

http://208.67.219.60/  ( that is my home page on firefox) (that page will load even if all dns servers are down)

and like open source it's free

if you do get a 404 error they show a few googel ads

been using it for about 1 1/2 years and love it
always up and fast ;-D

LandzDown Lounge / i'm back ;-DD
« on: September 05, 2008, 01:00:25 AM »
yep your worst nightmare is back to haunt the hallowed halls of this forum ;-DD

took a bit of a vacation

whats new with me?

well i am still with UBUNTU, think it is a great OS and love the price and support ;-DDDDD

bobby  ( bobo the wonder doggie) has as gray beard just like me

SSI and me are finally friends so living in the lap of comforts now  ( ok i will be honest maybe a mobile home isn't for everyone ;-D)

and i have a custom truck on the way ! ok i got a truck and did a few things to it, BUT a major manufacture listened to me and i will have the only Regular Cab tacoma with wheel to wheel nerf bar/steps and one step in the back so i can get to my truck box ! so now i will be able to get in it
( note this is a 2007 tacoma new on oct 5 and trying hard to get 1K miles on it by oct 5 this year !
now would be a great time for a cheap shot about a operating system that toyota uses. they told me my truck was out of warranty as i have not had a oil and filter in 12K miles and they have checked my odometer and agree it is right but can't fix their software for someone that doesn't drive much !

so i'm back but will not discuss operating systems anymore ;-DDDDDD  did i hear a big sigh of relief on that statement ;-D

now where the heck is ripley?????

Yep Ubuntu is not going to join the sell out and get :protection" from micro$oft !

another good reason to use UBUNTU  ;-D

maybe someday they will tell us what these 300+ items are?
it has only been 3 years that i know of and they have never said anything about what code? just throw numbers in the air and hope they stick?

LandzDown Lounge / Memorial Day
« on: May 27, 2007, 02:05:19 AM »

I watched the flag pass by one day.
It fluttered in the breeze.
A young Marine saluted it,
And then he stood at ease.
I looked at him in uniform
So young, so tall, so proud,
With hair cut square and eyes alert
He'd stand out in any crowd.
I thought how many men like him
Had fallen through the years.
How many died on foreign soil?
How many mothers' tears?
How many pilots' planes shot down?
How many died at sea?
How many foxholes were soldiers' graves?
No, freedom isn't free.

I heard the sound of taps one night,
When everything was still
I listened to the bugler play
And felt a sudden chill.
I wondered just how many times
That taps had meant "Amen,"
When a flag had draped a coffin
Of a brother or a friend.
I thought of all the children,
Of the mothers and the wives,
Of fathers, sons and husbands
With interrupted lives.
I thought about a graveyard
At the bottom of the sea
Of unmarked graves in Arlington.
No, freedom isn't free.

Jokes / How to Clean the Toilet ...
« on: May 09, 2007, 04:16:09 PM »
How to Clean the Toilet ...

1. Put both lids of the toilet up and add 1/8 cup of pet shampoo to the
water in the bowl.

2. Pick  up the cat and soothe him while you carry him towards the bathroom.

3. In one smooth movement, put the ! cat i n the toilet and close both
lids...

You may need to stand on the lid.

4. The cat will self agitate and make ample suds.

Never mind the noises that come from the toilet, the cat is actually
enjoying this.

5. Flush the toilet three and or four times. This provides a "power-wash"

6. Have someone open the front door of your home.

Be sure that there are no people between the bathroom and the front door.

7. Stand behind the toilet as far as you can, and quickly lift both lids

8. The cat will rocket out of the toilet , streak through the bathroom,

and run outside where he will dry himself off.

9. Both the commode and the cat will be sparkling clean.

Sincerely,
The Dog

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/6610901.stm

and in the story they say no good accounting programs? well think there is one and i even think it can import quickends files ;-D
but i still use my financial management system... reach in my pocket and if empty i really didn't need it ;-D

open office does a great job and can open edit and save the ms office stuff and several others

and GIMP is a nice photo edit program

and one nice thing about Ubuntu.... i click one button to "check for updates" and it will update all the software i have on my system, programs and even things i have downloaded ;-D
the only major drawback to it is it really doesn't like softmodems but once i joined the 20th centruy that problem was solved here

and where else can you get a cd shipped for free and see if you like it for free? and don't even have to install it on your system
 to try it !

and i love the cost (free)

if you want to look at a "how to"

LandzDown Lounge / a good read at security gardens today !!!!!!
« on: February 11, 2007, 02:51:41 AM »
i kinda feel people should know who they are dealing with !!!!

http://securitygarden.blogspot.com/

i'm just thinking about all of us that gave it our all to a bunch of crooks !

i haven't had a paycheck in 6 1/2 years nor any government monies and just live off my savings, but i still pay my taxes
and file them on time !

with the flakeyness of the product and support i don't know if it will survive, it would be nice to think so , but it would take HONEST work and i don't think the employees have had a good example for a few years

again lavasoft you have betrayed my trust ! i thought you were just stupid or had no idea how to run a business, not just a common thief!

just my opinion and not the opinion of any one else or this forum

ok i am new to dsl so playing a bunch

i have been running random speed test at dslreports both flash and java test
http://www.dslreports.com/stest

i have two boxes that are pretty close
they both have a 100mhz nic

linux is a 2.2 gig sapheron 728 memory
xp is a 1.7 gig atheron  1.12 gig memory

not an exact match but kinda close and on sevral bench test i see the linux box is always a lot faster

1277kb/sec  vs 775 kb/sec  on recieve (download)

and send (upload)
315k   vs   275k

now before you say that is not all that fast
this is discount, non linux supported dsl
and this is what they say i should be getting
    *  Download Speed: 384kbps - 1.5mbps
    * Upload Speed: 128kbps - 384kbps

any idea why the speed differences? both have java and flash of the same vrsions
