General Software News, Updates & Discussions / Windows 10 free upgrade.
« on: August 06, 2015, 04:12:00 PM »
A week ago my old desktop Vista HD finally failed... :thud:.. (I have got all doc/pictures on external HD).
Three days ago I got a new laptop with Windows 8.1 Pro
I have spent the past three days getting used to 8.1, but today I got "tempted".. :moreevil:  and via the windows updates, carried out the free upgrade to Windows10!!!
From beginning to end, upgrading took 1 hour 30 min...
Everything has gone great and my laptop now has Windows 10...

First impressions:  I must say I like it. I think I prefer it to 8.1...At least it has a proper "start" menu!...

Reservations: The issue of, apparently, non existent privacy, concerns me. I have, however come across this article which I will read carefully and, may be, apply its recommendations.

Now I start on a new (steep??) learning curve, trying to familiarize myself with the new program, which seems to be quite different to previous versions of windows!
Any advice would be appreciated.

Happy days ...  :mitch:

Computer Problems, Questions and Solutions! / Replacing Computer
« on: November 22, 2014, 04:18:33 PM »
Hi guys,
I am considering asking Father Christmas to replace my 12 year old desktop. Although there is nothing wrong with it, I can't help worrying about the life of the HD... :(
I currently run Vista on an Intel Core 2 Duo CPUE6750 @ 2.66 GHz, 2.0GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT.

Because it takes a lot of physical space on my desk (21 inch screen), I would like to replace it with a laptop.

I am considering this laptop or possibly even this one

Novatech is the same company that made my desktop, and is the only company I know that will only include the OS with no pre-installed crap-ware. I also know from experience, it is a company with outstanding customer after sales service.

I wish to run Windows 8.1 on it. (Should I run 8.1 Professional?)
I am not a gamer but I watch videos and I often work with 5 or 6 tabs open.

I would greatly appreciate your opinion and any advice you can offer, before I write a letter to Father Christmas.

Thank you

Internet / G-Mail warning!

Each time I log into my gmail account, I have started getting a message that:

This version of Firefox is no longer supported. Upgrade to a supported browser

The supported browsers are: Chrome, Firefox, IE, Safari...
I use Pale Moon.

If this "alert" carries on for too long, I can see myself getting fed up with it and abandoning my gmail account..

No such problem with my email account.

Security Software Programs / MBAM problem
« on: October 14, 2014, 09:01:33 AM »
Last night I updated to new version
Immediately after updating I did a scan and all was OK. I also carried out a scan with ESET NOD32 A/V and all was also OK.
I then switched the computer off.

This morning, I am having problems with MBAM.
Under "Real-Time Protection", I am notified that:
"Malicious Webside Protection disabled, Malware Protection enabled".
Clicking on the "Fix Now" button has no effect.
I can manually go into settings and activate Malicious Webside protection, but it does not hold the setting. After a few seconds it again disables Malicious Webside protection.

After many years of using MBAM, this is the first time I am having a problem with it. Any ideas please? Does anybody know of a problem with the new version?

Jokes / The Thoughtful Husband
« on: August 06, 2014, 02:22:21 PM »
A thoughtful Scottish Husband was putting his coat and hat on to make his way down to the local pub,

He  turned to his wee wife before leaving and said,  Maggie - put your hat and coat on, lassie.

She replied,  'Awe Jock that's  nice - are you taking me tae the pub with you?

'Nay, Jock replied I'm switching the  heating off while I'm  out.

LandzDown Lounge / Windows Tech. Support Scam
« on: June 28, 2014, 09:49:30 AM »
Just received a call from a very kind gentleman, with a very heavy Indian accent,  working for Windows Technical Support, informing me that my computer has been reporting an infection for the last couple of weeks. He very kindly offered to help me clean the infection... :hysterical:

My response was immediate and  totally not printable. He just put the phone down! My wife, who overheard my response, said to me..."How can you talk like that to people??"...He!...He!... :tease:

What I find interesting is that the call came from number 02070976517. 020 is the prefix for a Greater London number. I tried to call it but as soon as the number is dialled, the line gets disconnected!
I have looked up the number and found this link...

I find it strange that a call like that can appear to be coming from London. I assumed that they come from Asia and in this case my phone would have reported it as "International".

Security Software Programs / "Check for safe updates" confusion
« on: March 25, 2014, 08:55:33 AM »
My Windows Vista, is always fully updated.

When checking for safe updates, WinPatrol tells me:

"There is a newer version of Internet Explorer.
You have version: 9.00.8112.16421
Microsoft has version 11.00.9600.16521 available for download.
Click Here to Download Directly from Microsoft."

Using Pale Moon as default browser, I save installer on desktop. I then, click on installer icon, to continue with installation/set up, and I am told:

"Internet Explorer did not finish installing.
Set-up can't continue because a more recent version of Internet Explorer is installed on your computer."

Using IE9 , I am told:

You are using Internet Explorer 9, the latest browser for Windows Vista."

I don't get totally confused, too often...but this time, I am...

Is Scotty incorrect telling me that I need to update my Internet Explorer? (I very much doubt it!.. :))
If Scotty is correct, why can't I update and the system behaves like I have the latest version of IE for Vista?

P.S. Not sure I have this posted in the correct section... :(

Web News / Microsoft/NSA Collaboration
« on: March 15, 2014, 03:43:22 PM »
Hardly surprising Bill Gates is upset about Edward Snowden's revelations!
Microsoft has collaborated closely with US intelligence services to allow users' communications to be intercepted, including helping the National Security Agency to circumvent the company's own encryption, according to top-secret documents obtained by the Guardian.

The files provided by Edward Snowden illustrate the scale of co-operation between Silicon Valley and the intelligence agencies over the last three years.

Surprising this has not been introduced years ago despite the cost and safety factors involved !

This is waaaay toooo coool !!!

This is certainly great for anyone who has difficulty getting in and out of a car. Designed and developed in England, someone had a very bright idea. Wonder how long it will take to get this on the market in Japan and the U.S. ?

The reason you see two Lincoln Mark VIII 's is because Lincoln had commissioned Jatech to develop the door conversions for actual production and therefore bankrolled the whole endeavour.

General Software News, Updates & Discussions / Auslogics Disc Defragmenter
« on: February 19, 2014, 05:16:25 PM »
I have been using it for a while and today I attempted to update, from the Auslogics site, to the new version 4.5

Firstly, there is a pre-checked option to also download "My PCBackup". Un-checking that, and trying to continue, I get an NOD32 Antivirus warning, as shown at the bottom. It seems that un-checking the option  makes no difference.... :uhm:

Has Auslogicks moved over to the "Dark Side"?... :moreevil:
What difragmenters do other people use?

LandzDown Lounge / Security Audit
« on: February 19, 2014, 03:49:43 PM »
The privacy dangers of Google go beyond what Google knows about you -- you may have given dozens of sites access to your Google account information without realizing it. Here's how to conduct a security audit of your Google account, and how to take action to keep it safe.

How to conduct a security audit of your Google account | ITworld

I carried out the audit and only 5 sites had permission for my data.... :Yahoo: I recognised all of them, but was surprised to see that sites like twitter and facebook get data from Google. May be I shouldn't be! I revoked permission on 4 of them...  :virus:
