The router came with a user name and password. When I bring up the available networks on my phone the secure icon  (lock) appears next to the network name. I was just wondering if I had to change the network name and password given to me bt the router Manufacturer. I'm afraid to follow the instructions in the article for fear that I will loose access to my WIFI if I mess up.

Computer Problems, Questions and Solutions! / New Router Security???
« on: June 23, 2019, 09:16:12 PM »
I had to replace my router. When I originally set up the original I had no clue about security using WiFi. After 3 weeks I got a call from my ISP asking me if I illegally downloaded a movie. I had no idea what they were talking about. The movie that was downloaded wasn't something I would watch. She then asked me if I took measures to secure my WiFi. I had no idea that was even an option. Apparently I had been hijacked. I can't seem to find a way to secure my current router. Asking for help on this issue.

I did the Network Diagnostics again and got to Microsoft help.  Microsoft did a scan and found a faulty network adapter and fixed it.  I'm back online again.  Thanks again everyone.

Before I call my ISP again, I have a streaming TV service, which is working fine and the WiFi on my phone is also working fine.

I disconnected the wire from the router that comes out of the modem and connected it to the laptop. Waited for it to recognize the connection. The icon in the tray changed, then I tried to connect. Would not connect. While connected to the modem I did a network diagnostics and got a message that the DNS server isn't responding.

I didn't know if I should but I started a new thread on this issue. Everything was going well since I was here with this same issue a couple of weeks ago. I did try connecting with the cable from the router with no success. Just prior to this latest connection problem I was trying to get to do an Avast scan. I noticed that the icon indicated that it wasn't active. When I tried to do a scan it would get so far and stop. That's when the connection was lost and I wasn't able to reconnect.  I tried to uninstall Avast but it won't uninstall. I'm mentioning this in case it is connected to my connection problem.

Thanks.  I appreciate the help you've always given me.

Keep yours fingers crossed, But don't go too far.  I have a feeling I'll be back.

Starting last evening my laptop is connecting  to WIFI wirelessly normally.  If it's just temporary, I'll be back.

I reran Network Diagnostics again and again it found that the DNS server isn't responding. No offers to repair it. There is an option to get help from a friend, do a recovery or contact Customer support online. I'm have been and an trying to run wirelessly.

I was finally able to get a full internet connection and ran the flush.bat. When it restarted it wouldn't connect.

I tried resetting my modem and router by unplugging for a minute then replugging. I did that when I was troubleshooting with the cable company. Nothing came of that.

I tried Windows Network Diagnostics as suggested.  Tells me that the DNS server isn't responding. A new wrinkle has arisen. When trying to connect today it connected that Yahoo News, which is my home page. Problem is that I can't connect to any other sites from there. I can go to topics listed on that page but can't even get to Yahoo Mail.

Corinne, My laptop wouldn't connect to the internet at all today. Unless there is something to be done offline I've got a doorstop. Thanks for your time. I'm sending this from my phone. I'll check back just in case. I'll continue trying to connect

Hi Team, It's been a while and that's a god thing, since I haven't needed your help in a while.  This is the computer I'm asking about.Toshiba Satellite
Intel® Pentium® N3530 Processor
Windows 8.1
8GB DDR3L 1333MHz memory
Intel® Integrated Graphics
500GB HDD (5400rpm, Serial ATA)
DVD-SuperMulti drive (+/-R double layer)
Starting yesterday it's been disconnecting from internet, usually while going from one site to the next.  It has done it randomly and not just from any one site. Yesterday I tried every thing, Mbam scan, Avast scan, disconnecting and reconnecting, I checked the drivers and message said that the correct drivers are installed and up to date. I even called the cable Co and did troubleshooting with them.  Nothing is wrong with my cable, modem or router.  I have streaming TV service and that is working fine. Finally after about 40 tries it connected, but did the same today, but reconnected more quickly with only about 5 or 6 tries. Hoping for some help or else confirmation that my computer might need to be replaced.  To the best of my recollection, it's about 4 yrs old.
