Security Software Programs / Re: Re: SpywareBlaster Updates

Hi Corrine,

Long time no see.  I actually had no idea Edge was even supported by Spyware Blaster until your response to this subject.  Thanks for the heads up.  Now that I know Edge is under the wing of Spyware Blaster I will make sure the settings in Edge's Restricted Sites are still set at 'High' after Blaster updates.

Hope all is well with you and yours.  I'm still getting older and dumber but trying to keep up with the younger crowd.

Stay safe!

Thanks and regards,

Good morning hayc59 and Corrine,

I appreciate both of you taking the time to respond.  It is good to see familiar names from the past.

The reason I asked is because I use Edge and my wife uses Firefox (both on the same computer ... but not at the same time).

Thanks and regards,

Security Software Programs / SpywareBlaster Updates Discussion
« on: October 29, 2016, 09:42:56 PM »
Hi,

When I started using Windows 10 with the Edge Browser several months ago I stopped using Spyware Blaster after using it for years.

While visiting the forum today I noted that in 2013 winchester73 told what Browsers could use Spyware Blaster and among those listed was Internet Explorer (and browsers that use the IE engine).

So, now I am curious, even though I use Edge as my main browser  and my wife utilizes Firefox should I still be using Spyware Blaster?

Thanks and regards,

Hi plodr and darksurfer,

I appreciate your updates on the subject.  I think I will stay with the free version for now too.

Hi plodr,

Thanks for confirming what I was thinking.  Like I said I do like the number of programs SUMo watches on my computer.  It is very close to what PSI was doing prior to me having trouble using it.

I am hoping someone who has the Pro subscription of SUMo comes forward and lets me know if they think it is worth the money, i.e., does it do what it claims to do?  Right now I am just using it to tell me what needs updating and then I go to that website and try to update.

Thanks and regards,

Hi darksurfer,

Just a quick update.  I played around with the Program for a few minutes and now I realize that the free option just tells you if you have programs or software that needs updating.  To be able to update them via SUMo you need the Licence they are trying to sell me.

Right now I am just going to the Program sites of those that need updating and using their update features.

Am I correct that if I would buy a subscription to SUMo then I would be able to go directly to SUMo for the update or to the Programs update site via SUMo.

Regardless, I thank you for bringing my attention to it.  It is pretty close to Secunia PSI as far as the number of Programs it scans on my computer.

Thanks and regards,

Hi darksurfer,

I just installed SUMo and I am impressed with the number of programs on my computer that it discovered on its initial scan.

I have about five that it says need major updates and 10 which require minor updates.

However, when I try to update one of the programs I think it wants me to install the whole program not update it.  As an example when I click on Belarc Advisor (minor update) I am taken to a page where I can 'Download Belarc Advisor'.  Clicking on that link takes me to a page where they want me to pay 29.99 for 'SUMo - Lifetime Licence'.

What I am trying to do is just get updates not buy the whole program.  My example above applies to each of the programs I try to update.

Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks and regards

Hi winchester73. ky331 and Corrine,

All three of your responses will give me some things to ponder and try tonight.

Good to see you come aboard too Corrine and I don't mind being called 'old' at all .... It is what it is ....lol

Hope you are doing good too.  It is always good to see familiar names like yours and winchester73 and others like ky331 willing to help.

Take care and keep responding!

Thanks and regards,

Hi Winchester73,

I appreciate your fast and informative response.  I had looked at each of them but I noted that neither said they could run with Win 10.  Your thoughts on this please.

Thanks and regards,

Howdy,

A few weeks back I updated my Windows 10 to the Anniversary edition update.   Ever since then I have been having problems when attempting to use Secunia PSI 3.0 to check for updates for installed programs.  I can get it to open but then it just sits on 'Preparing to scan" until I finally take it off.  I have tried reinstalling but the same problem happens.

I am just wondering if anyone knows of any similar programs.  I have used PSI for years and would like to find another free update checker to take its place.

Thanks and regards,

Hi Corrine,

If I remember correctly your memory always worked properly and this memory is no exception....lol   Have a good day my friend!

Morning winchester73, Digerati and all,

I appreciate both of your comments even after I had marked this solved.

First, winchester73:  I think you hit the nail or the head.  Once you posted I did some recall exercises (and, with a 74-year-old Brain housing group, that isn't easy ...lol)  Right before Christmas we were blessed with our first Great grandchild.  As a result our Color ink cartridge has been getting a steady workout with us printing pictures, so much so, I had to put in a new one.  And, the more I thought about it, I realized it has probably been four or five weeks since I even thought about printing something using the black cartridge.  However, your suggestion to try cleaning the Print head with Isopropyl Alcohol came about five minutes too late since I had just got done heaving the old cartridge in the garbage can and installing the new one.  But, rest assured I will keep that in mind, should the problem return because of inactivity.

Second, Digerati: I do use genuine HP ink or, at least it comes in original HP packaging, box and all.  You never have to worry about opening up a bucket of worms with me.  That is how us old folks learn.  However, my problem is trying to retain what I have learned....lol

Third, for all involved in this thread:  I appreciate all your help.  All your names are familiar so I am thinking you have helped me in the past, if not on this forum, on others.  I don't get on as much as I used too.  Showing my wife how to use this computer was a big mistake ...lol

Until the next time,
Thanks and regards,
2harts4ever

SOLVED!

DR M and winchester73,

After I had exhausted everything else I finally decided to put a new black cartridge in and POW that was the problem.  The old one was either defective or empty although it was showing as about 85 percent full.

Regardless .... I appreciate your help.  Outside of using half a pack of paper and feeling completely stupid ...  all is well in the end .....lol

Thanks and regards,
2harts4ever

Hi winchester73,

(1) When I print a test page the color come3s out find but the black is very light, more like grey instead of black.

(2) Greyscale option is 'off'

(3) Tried changing it to 'on' but same problem.

It seems all I am doing is wasting paper ...lol

I already cleared the print heads, etc. but no help.  I just used the printer about a week ago and all was well.

Thanks and regards,
2harts4ever

Howdy,

I was trying to print off some forms this morning on my HP Deskjet 2540 printer and for some reason any 'type' normally showing in "black' was appearing as a light grey when printed.  I have been using this Printer for two or three years and never ran into this problem.

It appears a setting as been changed but my 74-year-old mind can't get a handle on it.

Any ideas?

Thanks and regards,
2harts4ever
