Computer Problems, Questions and Solutions! / Re: LibreOffice Won't Open
« on: December 31, 2020, 06:15:06 PM »
Back to report that FreeOffice appears to work seamlessly with both Microsoft Office and LibreOffice. In fact, I find it a lot easier to use than LO, and it's noticeably quicker. Apart from the TextMaker (Word alternative) which is really all I need, there is an Excel type replacement which I tested and also does the job without a whimper. Also a Presentation style program which I'll probably never need. Might have a play with that.

I'm going to replace LO on my home PC now...

ETA...a very Happy New Year to all, Let's hope it's an improvement on the last one!

Thanks, plodr. I went to your link, but the instructions kept sending me around in circles!  :o
I finally uninstalled the program and installed PlanMaker FreeOffice. So far it seems very good, is quite intuitive and should be enough for my meagre needs. I just hope it plays nicely with the LibreOffice on my other computer...

Computer Problems, Questions and Solutions! / LibreOffice Won't Open

Good morning, ladies and gents! Hope all are well and keeping safe...

I've been happily using LibreOffice for several years now, on both my home desktop and this laptop. Suddenly, starting a couple of months ago, I have been unable to get the program to open on the laptop. Won't start from the shortcut, won't start from Start Menu and neither from Program Files. Won't start in LibreOffice Safe Mode. I finally uninstalled then reinstalled. Twice. Same problem. Today I re-installed over the top of the existing program, but still not working. (But LibreCAD on the laptop is still fine.) But there are no problems with LibreOffice on my home PC. Both computers are running W10, both get all offered updates...

Would appreciate some advice!

Thanks from Shax.

Well, that's just resolved itself! I booted up my laptop (the culprit machine), and instantly got a popup from Scotty asking if I agreed to uninstall "Avast Safe Zone Browser". No acronyms this time. I hit yes and it's disappeared, hopefully forever. I had to restart the computer.

Then I did as you suggested and checked the Avast Interface. Safe Zone Browser is not listed. But there is one named Security Browser Extension, which I'll ignore.

Nah, I used IObit Uninstaller. But Avast just reinstalled it when I started up the computer. Will wait until Avast offers again, and accept it gratefully...

ky331...thanks so much for your information. Much appreciated. I did originally research "SZB" and found one reference to Avast and another to a trojan or worm with the same name. Next time that pops up, I'll allow it, as I've found Avast's Safe Zone Browser to be an insistent and persistent intruder. I've actually manually uninstalled it several times, but it keeps reappearing. I won't be sorry to lose it.

G'day, all!
Scotty keeps popping up with this one, which I don't recognise and looks suspicious to me. I haven't allowed it, but should I?

Hi, Aaron. It was set to automatic, and there were no numbers in the DNS server boxes. Empty.

Eureka! It's fixed! ;D

I bit the bullet and changed my DNS server addresses to Google's and and things are back to normal!

Again, thanks to you all for your gracious advice and expertise. A simple fix for some, but not for me. Couldn't have done it without you all...

Regards from Happy Shax!  ;D

Thanks for all the welcome advice.
I flushed the DNS cache, no difference. Ran Disk Cleanup, same result.

This is a wired desktop at home, running W10. The Administrator is me. I live alone in a remote area and my house is about 700 metres from my front gate. No-one else has been in my house, let alone on my computer, this year. No remote control has occurred.

I think that Avast! is the problem. According to the page linked to by Digerati  ...
"A new feature called Secure DNS is bundled with Avast! 2015 and is automatically enabled by default. Secure DNS is a feature that aims to secure DNS on the computer by running it through Avast's known DNS servers."

Rather than fiddle with changing the settings for my DNS servers, which is a bridge too far for me, might be time for a change. If I uninstall Avast! and replace with, say, free AVG, would that make this go away? Or would I still retain this new DNS setting?

Security Software Programs / OpenDNS Blocking Sites
« on: March 17, 2018, 10:02:57 AM »

Hello to Corrine and others here! It's been a while, but I need help if possible please.

I use a particular GardenWeb forum pretty much every day. Always click to it from my Firefox Bookmarks, and have done so for around 10 years. Suddenly today I get the message below. I can still open every other GW forum normally, but this one is being stubborn. There's another non-GW forum with the same problem.

I've searched my computer for any programs or add-ons resembling this OpenDNS thing, but nothing I can find. I certainly didn't download it. It seems to have coincided with today's Windows updates.

It does offer me the chance to report it with my name and email address, but that makes me a bit twitchy.

I just did a System Restore to 3 days ago. I've done full scans with MWB and Avast. And now I notice that while the Skype icon is where it always is on my taskbar, it refuses to open.  And using Chrome gives me the same blocking results.

Anybody know what could be happening?

Jokes / Family Support
« on: June 05, 2017, 05:10:48 AM »

Jake had proposed to young Gina, and was being interviewed by his prospective father-in-law. “Do you think you are earning enough to support a family?” the older man asked the suitor.

“Yes, Sir,” replied Jake, “I’m sure I am.”

“Think carefully now,” said Gina’s father. “There are twelve of us…”

Jokes / 2 Cows
« on: January 16, 2017, 06:05:58 AM »

Interviewer: How much milk do these cows give?
Farmer: Which one? The black one or the brown one?
Interviewer: Brown one.
Farmer: A couple of litres per day.
Interviewer: And the black one?
Farmer: A couple of litres per day.
Interviewer (naturally a bit flummoxed): I see. What do you give them to eat?
Farmer: Which one? Black or brown?
Interviewer: Black.
Farmer: It eats grass.
Interviewer: And the other one?
Farmer: Grass.
Interviewer (now annoyed) : Why do you keep asking which one when the answers are the same?!
Farmer: Because the black one’s mine.
Interviewer: Oh, and the brown one?
Farmer: It’s also mine.

Dankjewel. Nu begrijp ik het! One of my brothers has been living in the Netherlands (Landsmeer) for 40 years. I've visited him there many times. Beautiful country and great people.

Pierre, I am also in Australia (not Sydney, but same time zone).

I left the MWB running in the background while I did other work, and incredibly, after 26 minutes, it has progressed from checking for updates, to now doing the expected scan! Maybe I should learn to be more patient in future... :breakkie:
