Security Software Programs / ZoneAlarm Security Suite BETA
« on: September 18, 2008, 09:59:35 PM »
In an attempt to address the "performance issues" of the latest release of ZoneAlarm Security Suite (version Check Point have released for XP/Vista (32 bit versions) a beta version - This may be found at

If you are experiencing problems with ZASS and you have not made alternative arrangements to secure your computer you may wish to download and try this. Remember, this is not a release version and there are no guarantees. It is clearly stated on the ZA site:

The software you are about to download is Beta release software and is NOT for general release. You may encounter unexpected issues and problems when using the software. Please read the end-user license agreement during installation for complete details.

Please remember that there is NO technical support for Beta versions.

Please read the linked page carefully before deciding to proceed and ensure that you back up all important information and that you have created a System Restore Point before proceeding with the beta version.

A vulnerability has been confirmed in version 7.0.483.000 and of ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite. In certain circumstances using the "Scan with ZoneAlam Anti-virus" from the context menu (after right-clicking on a file) could compromise the computer.

Security Software Programs / Malwarebytes Anti Malware (MBAM)
« on: September 03, 2008, 08:59:13 PM »
A bug has been discovered in versions of MBAM prior to v1.26 which may impact on the ability of networked machines to authenticate to shares. This is rectified in v1.26 and the developer has posted a fix for machines that have previously been effected by this bug. Full details are posted at:

This bug does not impact on stand alone machines (those that are not connected to a Local Area Network) and MBAM continues to be one of the most effective tools in the fight against malware. Grateful thanks go to JeanInMontana for permission to link to the above post.  :hallo:

Security Alerts & Briefings / Olympic silliness
« on: August 07, 2008, 02:43:59 PM »
With the Olympics about to start we can expect to see a rash of phishing e-mails and new exploits in messages from the sponsors, or "news services" purporting to be CNN, all with an apparent connection to the Olympic games. It goes without saying that you wouldn't be caught dead clicking on an unsolicited link but be careful. In the last few days we have seen a Zlob variant doing the rounds by Facebook (see so these are worrying times.

If you have a RSS/Atom Aggregator I recommend that, for the next couple of weeks at least, you subscribe to the SANS news feed at

Security Alerts & Briefings / UPS Tracking Number Trojan
« on: July 25, 2008, 10:05:02 PM »
Hooray! The virus writers have finally caught up with me, today I received an email containing the UPS Tracking Number Trojan that has been the subject of much discussion of late. If you are not familiar with it it takes the form of an email with the following characteristics:

From: "United Parcel Service"
To: <> (Not me! Address will be spoofed)
Subject: [RE] UPS Tracking Number 1420968535 (Number will change)
Unfortunately we were not able to deliver postal package you sent on July the 1st in time
because the recipient’s address is not correct.
Please print out the invoice copy attached and collect the package at our office

Your UPS

Attached to the mail was the payload, a  file named "". This file contains the trojan dropper wrapped up in an .exe file.

It was a pretty crude attempt against me as an individual but as a Social Engineering attack it has the potential to have a significant impact on the corporate world where UPS shipments are commonplace. More details on this can be found at:

Also, there is another Trojan doing the rounds that is masquerading as a Hallmark e-card. Remember the golden rule - don’t open attachments without checking the content and senders first. Most of the AV companies should be able to deal with this but why put them to the trouble in the first place!

With all the kerfuffle over the DNS issues and the problems in respect of MS08-037 and Zone Alarm the latest advisory from Sun may have slipped under the radar.

Details of the advisory may be found here and you are advised to update your installation of Java to the latest release (remember to remove older versions).

Sun'a advice on updating mat be found here and an excellent article on how to administer your Java installation has been written by Corrine  :rose:, click here to go to the article.

On Tuesday July 8th Microsoft released a Security Advisory in respect of Word 2002 SP3

Quote from: Microsoft
An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the local user. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less affected than users who operate with administrative user rights.

This is still under investigation and their is no solution as yet, however it would appear that other versions of Word are not affected. For full details see Microsoft Security Advisory (953635)

LandzDown Lounge / UK Veterans Day
« on: June 26, 2008, 10:34:06 PM »
Today is Veterans day in the United Kingdom.

UK Veterans Day is a celebration of the contribution made by all those who have served in the Armed Forces and a means of raising public awareness of Veterans issues. It takes the form of a nationwide celebration. It is not about commemoration and therefore does not replicate Remembrance Day (November 11th or closest Sunday to 11/11).

Many thanks to all the service personnel, past and present, of Her Majesty for their contribution in making the world a safer place. Thanks too to the service personnel of friendly nations who have supported and continue to support and participate with our armed forces. May your God go with you.

Ok, so what is the odd / crazy / weird story that is current in your location? I'd be interested to hear about the weird and whacky events that you may come across, please post them here. The only rules are that they should not offend the casual reader and sources must be stated.

To get you started, how about this tale from the Daily Telegraph of a UK crop circle that defines pi to 10 significant figures;

Can you top that?  :Win73:

Jokes / The Village Idiot
« on: May 26, 2008, 10:21:56 AM »
An American tourist is on holiday in a Cornish village when he spots what is obviously the village idiot sitting next to the horse trough. In his hand is an old stick, and tied to the end is a piece of string which is dangling in the water. The tourist decides to humour the fellow and asks: "Have you caught anything yet?" The village idiot looks up and studies the stranger, before saying: "Ooh Arr, you be the seventh today."
