« on: April 28, 2012, 07:49:09 PM »

Microsoft has rushed out a fix for a serious bug in its Hotmail webmail services.

The bug allowed a hacker to reset the password for a Hotmail account, locking out its owner and giving the attacker access to the inbox.

The fix was put together because the bug was starting to be actively exploited online.

Sex movie worm spreads worldwide..

A booby-trapped e-mail that promises free sex movies is racking up victims around the world, warn security firms.

Some variants of the Windows worm contain a link to PDF that a recipient has been told to expect.

Those clicking on the link get neither movies nor documents but give the malware access to their entire Outlook address book.

When installed, the worm sends copies of itself to every e-mail address it can find.

Phishing attack targets Hotmail

Quote
Thousands of accounts on web-based e-mail system Hotmail have been compromised in a phishing attack, software giant Microsoft has confirmed.

BBC News has seen a list of more than 10,000 e-mail accounts, predominantly originating from Europe, and passwords which were posted online.

Microsoft said it had launched an investigation.

Phishing involves using fake websites to lure people into revealing details such as bank accounts or login names.

Crack teams of volunteers keep the net online and functioning, according to leading internet lawyer Jonathan Zittrain of Harvard University.
The way data is divided up and sent around the internet in many jumps makes it "delicate and vulnerable" to attacks or mistakes, he said.

‘Swine flu virus' hits Japan’
http://www.straitstimes.com/Breaking%2BNews/Tech%2Band%2BScience/Story/STIStory_370693.html

TOKYO - JAPAN has reported no human cases of deadly swine flu so far - but a computer virus of the same name has been spreading on the Internet in recent days, authorities warned on Thursday.

Japan's National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID) said on its website that a suspicious Japanese-language email message with an attached file called 'information on swine flu' had been circulating in cyberspace.

'The institute has received reports that the email message falsely identifying itself as coming from the NIID is circulating,' it said.

'The email is carrying a file titled 'information on swine flu', which has been recognised as an illegal programme by the institute's virus-checking software,' the NIID statement said.

The institute did not say what kind of malware was hidden inside the file or what harm it might do.

The email, originating from senders in the '@yahoo.co.jp domain, seemed to be sent to random Internet users, the institute said.

'It is obviously a suspicious message falsely identifying itself,' it said.
NIID staff were not immediately available for comment.

Japan has so far reported no human cases of swine flu, which is believed to have killed up to 84 people in Mexico - eight of them confirmed - and has spread to the United States, Europe, Israel and New Zealand. – AFP
