LandzDown Lounge / Memorial Day 2017
« on: May 28, 2017, 08:28:01 PM »
For mitch, the Phantom Phixer, who kept the F4s flying.

Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, was conceived after the American Civil War as a way to honor the Union’s war dead (Logan’s General Order No. 11, 5 May 1868).  Union soldiers had seen Southern women placing flowers on the graves of fallen soldiers from both sides (Decoration Day was the practice of garlanding graves by the Daughters of the Confederacy).  The Southern states set aside separate days to honor their fallen Confederate soldiers.

With the end of the bloody World War I, it evolved into a day of remembrance for all military members who died in the service of the United States.

Freedom is not free.  All gave some, but some gave all.  Honor and remember those who paid the ultimate price, and be grateful for their sacrifice.

"If you are able, save for them a place inside of you and save one backward glance when you are leaving for the places they can no longer go. Be not ashamed to say you loved them, though you may or may not have always. Take what they have taught you with their dying and keep it with your own. And in that time when men decide and feel safe to call the war insane, take one moment to embrace those gentle heroes you left behind."

Major Michael Davis O'Donnell
1 January 1970
Dak To, Vietnam

Mike was shot down a few short months later, on 24 March 1970.  He was attempting to extract 8 members of LRRP RT Pennsylvania, 14 miles inside Cambodia in Ratanokiri Province, after they declared a Prairie Fire emergency.  The Bikinis aircrews supporting MACV-SOG operations had a creed they lived by ... "You take them in - you get them out!"

RED THREE'S last transmission before his Huey burst into flames was "I've got all eight, I'm coming out."

Listed as KIA on 7 February 1978 (Presumptive Finding of Death).  Remains repatriated on 12 April 1995.  Identified on 20 June 2001.  Came home to Arlington National Cemetery in a group burial on 16 August 2001.
