Hacktivismo, a group of human-rights advocates and computer security experts, has released a Firefox-based browser designed to allow anonymous Web surfing.

The Web browser, called "Torpark," is a modified version of Portable Firefox. Released last week, it can be run directly from a USB drive, meaning it can be used on public terminals in cybercafes. It creates an encrypted connection to the TOR (The Onion Router) network, which supplies a succession of different IP addresses.

personel comment ....

This should drive China crazy trying to track people

nothing is left on the host computer if run as a portable
and pretty darn hard to track with the IP changing every few min or you ask it to
and it is Firefox portable under the skin !

well off to download ;-D

Q: does it work
A: It does seem to for a few hours at least.

takes a bit of time to get "hooked up" when you start it !

and after 90 sec it gives you the option to quit, try again, try and don't bug me option
i use the don't bug me and try again and hook up on the pen drive ! takes about 3 or 4 min on me and dialup and slow usb !
firefox is set for max security, os i did
extensions/no scripts/preferences  ( they had it to disable all scripts)

and using my old sygate firewall i showed stealth on all ports at grc.com and kiero on a friends showed a few open ports ?
i played with it for a bit and was in france, germany and uk for a bit before i quit and came back to usa on regular ff ;-D

mitch,

Well as you can see I have it working but yes as you sdaid it does seem to be a bit slow but it does do the job that it was set out to do so I will give it a

Digitally-Enhanced

:gwave: :mitch: :mitch: works fine once you get used to it even on an older PC.
Born before the micro-chip so be kind !

i'm quite leary about leading ppl to believe it is at all possible to stealthily touch the net.
yes, an internet cafe is a good start, but if you frequent it, you begin to build up a routine which can be followed.

remember, ip resolves to a solid, real, hardware (mac) address; whether it's your router that you're spoofing with, or your pc's nic, or your modem.  ip routes from here to there through routers with solid, real, mac addresses.  and the isp knows who's at the far end of their line; they bill them every month.  not to mention the horrors of micorsoft's leaky os.

just my thoughts... off the wall tho they may be...

encripted and changing ip addresses

did you see about how in germany tor servers were confiscated by the police as they had tracked won a kiddy porn on it?

well it is 1 month later and they gave up trying to find out where it came from

no i do not support illegal file sharing! but i figure if the police and all their skills gave up it should be safe for me with my firewall and other things ;-D

babyoh

mitch,
i'm very curious about torpark...

(i wonder whether it would work as an alternate browser on a laptop or PC, or cause conflcts. is it virtually indentical to the FIREFOX browser interface?? is it DIFFICULT to set up??)

i looked at TOR, but it seemed complicated to set up - also complaints of it being SLOW. (how much is TORPARK slowing you down??)

ALSO, i read Somewhere that onion server proxies used DONATED bandwidth, and there alway's a risk somewhere along the line,  people are "looking at" what passes through (i'm not sure how "encrypted" the signal is, and whether it's possible to extract passwords, etc.)

* anyway, curious to hear more about your experiences -- or, ANYONE's -- with this product, or TOR.

(i lead a pretty boring life, but -- hey -- anything that increases privacy, i'm FOR it.)
:Hammys pint:

the idea of encryption is encouraging, but we the citizens are not allowed to have really good encryption; that would hinder our (any) government's efforts to snoop.

and yes, i'm all for privacy.  it is not appropriate for police or a police state to be poking and prodding in everyone's business as cuba with it's block monitor (the family in the neighborhood that writes who left whose house at what time and what direction they were going (see national geographic magazine for details.))

it's just not a realistic expectation to think you can conceal yourself should your government become interested in you.  even if you have never or never will be involved with crime, espionage, or other immoral activities...

as to stories on tv, radio, newspaper... who knows...

mitch

it has a "new button" on the firefox and you can go to "tor" or can use it as a regular firefox, and it has a nice collection of "extensions"
i have been just playing with it. and on a dialup and only usb 1.1 it is slow

a portable app can be used on a normal system. all you have to do is download the portable app, and have a folder for it, unzip it, and create a shortcut of the blue onion to your desktop.. then you just double click the onion and follow the directions ( click ok)
i click the keep trying and ignore the time) and after a bit you get a modified firefox screene ! no magic setup required !
i will not be using it full time, but it is nice to have in my bag of tricks ;-) and a new toy !
i would call this program as easy as you can get and no skills beyond newbie are required ! just load and go , ( i did change a few of the addon settings as i like to allow/disallow java so no scripts was changed !
i don't play computer games but do like to try something totally new and this is it for me now ;-D

read their documentation page on install and you will see

Temmu

i'm installing pc linux os 9.3 on this pc (in a bit) but afterwards, i'll download and play too!

mitch

i just got the ubuntu distro on the mail and WOW !!!!

i got a cd for free ( or you can d/l a iso)
and i impressed a bunch ! ease of use and already has GIMP,Open Office, firefox/ installed
they have a easy way to install most of the common aps (t-bird,k3b and such)

now i am going to have to look around for a hard drive for it ;-D

(don't like dual boots)

so with that and the a/v they have a guy would be pretty safe !

total cost===$0.00

and looks like they have a good forum going too !

min specks for a "live cd" is 256 meg of ram, for install min of 2 gig disk space

and as with all inuux has troubles with winmodems but found my external without trouble (kppp)
