NIVIDA ERROR at bootup

HI
I am using windows xp home SP2 with all updates.

I am using NIVIDA GeForceFx 5500

When the computer boots if i check Windows Viewer, i get this error in  : See below

The NVIDIA Display Driver Service service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this 1 time(s).

When click link to microsoft .com etc
I get this

I have never used command prompt before.
Would i type sc query followed by nivida, in command prompt then hit enter.

Everything seems to be working okay .

Pete, hi have run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool?

The DirectX Diagnostic Tool is designed to help you troubleshoot DirectX-related issues.

The default installation folder for Dxdiag.exe for Microsoft Windows 2000 and Microsoft Windows XP is:
C:\Windows\System32
To start the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, click Start, click Run, type dxdiag in the Open box, and then click OK.

The tool will allow you to trouble for problems.

You would type

sc query <name of service>

such as, if it was BlahService:  sc query BlahService

The question is, "What is the name of the service?"  While you can go into the Services MMC Snap-In (start | run | services.msc) to find out (double-click "NVIDIA Display Driver Service" then look under Service Name), I think a better route is trying the latest nVidia video card drivers.  While I personally 'cheat' and just install the new ones over the old ones, I believe the setup instructions say to first uninstall the previous one, then after rebooting, install the new one.

Just a shot in the dark idea.

Hi numbnuts

For some reason, I am now not getting the error anymore.

I run DirectX Diagnostic Tool, and it passed all the tests, but if i get the error again, i will certainly try Trouble shooting.

I have read your reply with interest, and will certainly try the above to see if it fixes the problem if it comes back
