First, Howdy to those who know me, and hello to those who don't.  Been awhile, I know...  Been real busy lately and working my fingers to the bone, so to speak...

Anyways, a friend of mine needed help in recovering his system.  He has dialup and I told him he needed to have his system cleaned well.  He finally has the time, but I fear for his system,    heheh...   HJT logs below:

Thank you very much for any help you can offer.

Hi, R3D!  It is certainly good to see you again.  Even though you are busy, I hope you have an opportunity to stop in every now and again to visit.

As to your evaluation . . .

QuoteI fear for his system

I agree.

W32.IRCBot
QuoteThis Trojan contains backdoor capabilities that allows a hacker to control your computer remotely using Internet Relay Chat (IRC). This Trojan also has the ability to download and execute other files of the hacker's choice.
A backdoor trojan of this nature can also be instructed to:

  • download and execute files from the Internet

  • retrieve system information such as Operating System details

  • retrieve CD keys for certain computer games, if present

  • start a SOCKS proxy

  • perform denial of service (DoS) attacks

  • start several other servers: rlogin, http, tftp. The ports used for these are configurable.

  • log keystrokes

  • capture video from a webcam, if present

  • send e-mail
Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please refer your friend to these documents for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

If after that, he wishes to proceed, please let us know.

Yeah, I had a strong feeling he would need to reformat and start over.  i am going to try and recover some of his files from the system before doing this first.  I will, of course, scan them before I bring them on to my system.  I am going to see if he can upgrade to DSL service later as well.  I am currently building a system for him and I will replace his "infected" system before I rebuild this one.  Thank you so much for the advice. I will pass it on to him so he understands the extent of the damage, and why he should be vigilant in keeping his system clean.

I will try to logon more often, but I am working 10-15 hours a day with this major project and I travel around all of Northern California as well.  Yes, that includes Napa, heheheh...   :hammy:

Corrine

Hi, R3D.  That's a lot of hours and not much time left to spend with your daughter.  :rose:

When you finish your friend's system, I hope you also teach him about keeping his system up to date.  I see his has SP1 and IE6 and no firewall.  I wouldn't be surprised if Norton is expired too.

The following are free for personal use for consideration on the new system:

Free Antivirus Software:

avast! 4 Home Edition
Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic

Free Firewalls:

Agnitum Outpost Firewall
Kerio Personal Firewall
Online Armor Free
