Off and on over the last month or so, I have been getting an error -- that seems to be triggered by printer issues -- of Services.exe has generated errors and will be shut down with error code -1073741819 by NT Authority.

I say that it is triggered by printer issues, because each time I have had the error, it has been preceded by problems with my HP All-in-one Officejet 6300 printer.  Last time, it was printing gibberish and I uninstalled and reinstalled it.  This time, the scanner (which I don't use often) wasn't working and during troubleshooting as directed by HP I deleted the USB Composite Device, disconnected and reconnected the printer and reinstalled the USB Composite device.  Immediately upon completion of this I got the Services shutdown error, and upon restart when I opened the HP Solutions Center it came back.

Currently it seems to be working but as this error has recurred a couple times now I would like to get it permanently fixed. My AVG 7.5 (Paid version) doesn't find any viruses. I am still getting other errors; as I was typing this one popped up saying "svchost.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created."

I'm running Windows XP Pro, service pack 3, autoupdates on and complete.

I'm new to the forums here; what is my first step in getting help, please?

Thank you,

Dawn

to prolong that shutdown click start > run
in the box type shutdown /a
note the space between the n and /

that wont solve the issue, but will hold your pc from rebooting so we can assess this more

you could also try a system restore back to recent date.

I have learned the shutdown -a trick from googling this issue. The Thread referenced above was closed and locked without resolution due to it being posted repeatedly by the same person on several forums. I skimmed over their other forums but it appears that he has the lsass.exe version of this problem, which indicates the sasser virus; mine is services.exe, which I believe does NOT indicate the sasser virus.

Should I download hijackthis and post a log? I don't think I can do a system restore because I don't have a known good date. This started over a month ago; I thought it was fixed but it is recurring now.  It did not recur in the interim.

I will appreciate any help you can give. I see that others with this problem were often recommended to run combofix, but I also saw people "scolded" for running combofix without being directly told to do so.

I hope this additional information will be helpful.
Spybot: Search & Destroy found nothing but a single spyware (Coupon Printer).
Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware found 3 items, log below.
AVG 7.5 Anti-Malware PRO found nothing.

To add an additional piece to the puzzle (sorry for multiple posts back-to-back, but I can't seem to find the Edit button!  :smash: ) I am now getting a new error on startup -- not every time.  I got the error "Data Execution Prevention - To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program. Name: Services and Controller app Publisher: Microsoft Corporation"

This came up three times back to back, then I restarted and it didn't reappear.

My antivirus comes back clean. Spybot and Malwarebytes and Ad-Aware all come back clean.

I am now unable to do microsoft updates; if I try, I get the aforementioned svchost.exe error. I tried updating manually rather than the automatic update; same thing. It downloads the updates but gives the error and then hangs on install. It also gives me some funky graphical bugs -- seems to disable my windows Theme, perhaps? It just flickers and starts looking all win98-ish!

I am frustrated with this one!

@Felburg -- As Dawn recognized, it is highly discouraged to follow the instructions provided to someone else.  The instructions we provide are prepared on an individual basis.

Hi, Dawn.  Welcome to LandzDown Forum.

Several things.

-- When you post the log I am about to request, please just copy/paste the results.  Don't use the "code" as it is much too difficult to read.  (These old eye just can't take it :) )
-- It is also important for readability that you turn off wordwrap in Notepad.
-- Your MBAM log was not clean as it showed a CLSID for a parasite relating to a rogue (fake) security site.

I must admit, I have not run into someone with the NT Authority problem in a long time.  Keep Stealthzone's instructions handy to prolong the shutdown:
Click Start > Run, in the box:  shutdown -a

Please do the following:

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Thank you, Corrinne, for your response.  By the way after running malwarebytes and correcting issues, I did another full scan and it came back clean.  I ran the Windows malicious software removal tool to check for the sasser virus and it came back clean too.

Corrine

Hi, Dawn.

My lunch break is over but I have a quick (two-part :) ) question --

Is this a business computer?  If not, why are you trying to run Microsoft SQL Server?

I do use it for work, yes, and the SQL server is used for one of my applications.

Corrine

Hi, Dawn.  Thank you.  That is what I suspected.

We do not provide assistance in cleaning business or corporate computers. There could be legal issues if sensitive information is disclosed via the logs or if the infection or cleanup process damages company files. In situations where there is a malware issue, it is difficult to distinguish between well intentioned "fixing" by the end user and hacking the system. The damage that can be done to a business infrastructure is immense. If it is a networked computer, it is likely that more than one machine is infected. Thus, the company IT Department needs to be involved in the cleanup process.

Most of the tools used in the cleanup process are not "enterprise" versions and have only been tested on home computers. The tools could make policy or other setting changes that could conflict with the company policy. In addition, the software and other tools used in the cleanup process are "free for personal use" where the computer owner is accepting the risk. Not only are employees not in a position to accept such liability for company property, but we cannot knowingly abuse the terms of use of the software developers and vendors who provide the tools.

As one example, in the process of reviewing the software on your computer, I would have you remove the old versions of SunJava.  However, many business applications rely on those versions.  Thus, the process could disable the ability to work with those applications.  In addition, the System event log implies that the service errors you are having appear to be related to the Microsoft SQL Server software.  You may need to work with the SA (server admin) or DBA (database admin) to resolve those issues.

Kindly note that the use of the freeware versions of Lavasoft's Ad-Aware, AVG and WinPatrol are for personal use only.  Use on a business machine is against the Terms of Service.

Thanks for your help. I do have the paid version of AVG, didn't know about the restriction on Ad-Aware (which was installed only yesterday) and Winpatrol -- I'll remove them.

Unfortunately, we don't have an IT department or a network; this is the only computer. It's used for both home and business use.

I guess I'll have to have it serviced somewhere.

Thank you!
