My week-old computer has two instances of the vundo trojan, both in the registry.  Rist wouldn't run, I didn't want to double my trojans with erunt, and the root program can't run on Windows 7.  But I do have a malware bytes scan and a HijackThis log.  I download some freeware games and they are probably  at fault.

This was the only infections:

Registry Keys Infected:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{56256a51-b582-467e-b8d4-7786eda79ae0} (Trojan.Vundo) -> No action taken.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{56256a51-b582-467e-b8d4-7786eda79ae0} (Trojan.Vundo) -> No action taken.

Here's the hijack this:

Please help me....this is a new computer!

David1970

As Ben Franklin once said, God helps those who help themselves.  Out of curiosity, I looked for the registry entries and found two identical keys, but concerning the My Web Search Toolbar, and I deleted both and rebooted.  I ran MBytes and it came out clean.  One of those games must have offered that toolbar and I accidentally said yes.

Am I out of the woods?

If so, please tell me what is the best free antivirus program and firewall?  I got Avast, MBytes, and Zonealarm.

Please tell me I'm clean, but tell me the truth if isn't.

Corrine

Hi, David.

Congratulations!  I see that you went all the way with 64-bit Windows 7.

Yes, you should be fine with Avast, Malwarebytes and ZoneAlarm as long as you do not disable them to play games and keep them updated.  I notice, however, that you apparently also installed AVG.  Have you completely uninstalled it via Add/Remove programs yet?  If not, please do so and then run the uninstall tool from http://www.avg.com/us-en/download-tools .

I could tell from the log on your previous computer that you like computer games.  Please do yourself a favor and only download programs from the vendor site and do not use P2P programs.  I would also advise you to avoid beta programs.  There were a couple of those in your add/remove programs on the old computer as well.

Although your computer is new, the software that was installed when it was built is probably out of date.  The best way for you would be to install Secunia Software Inspector from http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/

QuoteThe Secunia PSI is a FREE security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Attacks exploiting vulnerable programs and plug-ins are rarely blocked by traditional anti-virus and are therefore increasingly "popular" among criminals.

I would also advise you to install my favorite monitoring software monitoring program, WinPatrol, which includes the features described at http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html

Some additional advice as well as links to useful Microsoft help pages are available in my blog post, So, You Have a New Computer.

Now that you have reached the end of my long list of advice, David, yes it appears that your new computer is clean.  :)
