Anyone have the solution to WMP9 not wanting to play wav files thru the browser from off web sites but will play them just fine locally?

I reinstalled it again and still get the same problem.

Seems i never had this problem with Windows 98 even though wmplayer.exe is a very "Popular" exploit and is still targeted by lousy dog advertisers who still like drop exploits in their ads rotations for many clients. You can still get hit by just visiting some normal looking sites unfortunately. I wish i had the time to make a list of all the seemingly good sites that stand high on Google's search order but are sitting in wait to dump an exploit on you. I actually am considering contacting by phone Google and express my disappointment that they still allow sites with potential damaging exploits to have high search ratings and although i doubt you could get very far, it would be nice if they throw sites with lousy pop ups & exploits on them to the bottom of the heap. Or maybe even give them no attention at all would be better AND SAFER! for everyone LoL

KERIO is "caught" on a couple of occasions a loader.exe dumped in C:\ Folder where even the AV is missed it!  Each time this micro exploit occured the Firewall would First issue a notice that wmplayer had been tampered with followed by the loader.exe requesting outgoing access (yeah right). I promptly just deleted loader and overwrite wmplayer with a fresh copy LoL

Just so you know, ALL scans return positive and nothing suspicious is detected. Just wonder maybe if something else is limiting WMP9 from playing wavs from the web, of course microsofts lame old error list never offers any real solutions to anything. Theres no mention of needing some silly codec or any of that stupid nonsense.
Thanks

Paddy

Joe, not sure if this will help you or not but open up media player >click>tools >options>file types: and tick the box windows audio file (wave)
I had the same problem a while back I think its UN ticked by default for security reasons..

Hi Paddy: :)

Wish a solution were that simple: All those file associations are checked except AIFF, also under Network all the Streaming Audio boxes are checked also. It was suggested that section could be a culprit but that doesn't help.
I pity poor microsoft, they can't even perfect a small matter like an audio player, WMP, in these systems. After all these years i still read on the various forums and articles of users running into difficulties and continuing issues, especially with WMP10 which i dumped a week after installing it for it's lousy sound and kept breaking up the audio.
You come up with another suggestion please be sure to drop it in here for me again.  Joseph

Joe lets have another go then, have a look at this see if it helps.
But I can bet you already been here..I also dumped 10 only after 2 days it was crap..

1.7  When I click a link to a .midi or .wav file on a Web page, the file doesn't play unless I right-click the link, click "Save target as", and then save it to my desktop. How can I avoid this?
In Windows Media Player 9 Series or later, do the following:
1.   On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the File types tab.
2.   Clear the MIDI file (midi) check box, and then click Apply.
3.   Select the MIDI file (midi) check box, and then click OK.

Beats me, i can't for the life of me figure this one out nor really am going to put too much time into it ti understand why, still refuses to play a wav file online after completely reinstalling, applying all the settings again, and even installed some of those codecs which i think mainly have to do with video.

Any other suggestions to try?

Joe,

This doesn't answer your original question but have you considered installing Irfanview 3.98 and setting the file associations in that program to handle these file types? It may not be the  perfect solution but it should assist until you can sort out WMP.

I am very pleased to report a complete reversal of fortunes and now have WMP9 fully operational again. While in conversation with GR@PH:'<S in asking him to assist by testing a site with wavs, it occured that it was worth a look to check my firewall, and indeed! i discovered that 2 outgoing connections request were denied by rule to WMP, whether i inadvertantly made that choice at sometime or another or not, that was stopping the WMP player from being able to bring the audio onto the system. So then that was the problem all along and now removing the denial checks in KERIO was also the solution.

Thanks guys for suggests.
