And the story goes:

zep was helping someone whose windows update service is missing...gone...nowhere to be found in services. He and I were trying to export the Windows Update Service key so the guy could merge it into his registry. He hasn't been able to update for 9 months.

Question: Is the WUS key the same for 32-bit as it would be for a 64-bit system?

PS: I had no idea he posted the test here. I came across it by chance and thought it was funny as it related to the issue he is working.

Don't know if the key would be the same for 32-bit and 64-bit.

Has the person tried the Microsoft Fix it solution?  How do I reset Windows Update components?

What about the System File Checker Tool?

Hm??? SFC? He hasn't ran that yet! He asked the guy to query the key and is still waiting for a reply.

He did try Microsoft Fix it 50202 in his 1st post here in the thread.

The member had a redirect virus cleansed back in Feb. of this year. I'm going to look at the thread to see if I can find anything. Looks like the update issue was never mentioned till now.

Doesn't look like he tried Microsoft Fix it 50686, Error message when you use Windows Update or Microsoft Update Web sites to install updates: 0x80070424, which applies to Windows XP SP2, in his original thread and the error message he posted.

In the fella's first post he states:

You see where he had the fella use a command prompt to start the  wuauserv but it came up as invalid. Odd! As if it isn't even there!

You know, zep should be typing this himself but I've been interested in update errors since I was given a laptop awhile back that was horribly infected and couldn't get SP2 to install. Flavius at Vista forum helped me fix it. That was fun and very educational.  :goodie:

Too bad he hasn't returned.  It really sounds like Microsoft Fixit 50686 is what he needs.

Symptom 1
When you try to connect to Microsoft Windows Update or Microsoft Update, you receive the following error code:
0x80070424

Symptom 2
On a computer that is running Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), you encounter one or more of the following problems:

    The Automatic Updates feature is turned off in Security Center and you cannot turn this feature on.
    The Automatic Updates service is missing from the Services snap-in.
    The registry is missing one or both of the following registry subkeys:
        HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wuauserv
        HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_WUAUSERV

When I see error codes posted, I like to research to see what I can find for solutions.

Yeah. The more I read the more I think so too! I love searching for error codes. Especially those that involve Windows Updates.
