One of my computers BSOD'ed after a win7 windows update. Am dealing with that now.
- i came across this:  it was posted about 30mins ago & is titled:  "new windows update causing bsod"
http://www.technibble.com/forums/showthread.php?p=299733

- On this computer i'm running XP Pro. Can I STOP the winUpdate? it's downloaded, is showing me the yellow shield in the taskbar. Am concerned, if i RE-START or re-boot, the thing may update and nuke the computer i'm on now too...

thanx

On the Windows 7 computer, did you restart again?  Did it get as far as showing you the message about installing updates?   The most troublesome update is generally .NET Framework and I had three .NET updates for Windows 7 with no issues.

On the other hand, the updates didn't seem to want to finish installing on Windows Vista.  It took three restarts before the "installing updates" message appeared and the process completed.

By the yellow shield on the Windows XP computer, do you mean that the updates are installed and you are being prompted to restart in order to complete the installation?  If that is the case, you can change time for the restart message while you complete the install on Windows 7 with successful restarts.

I had 5 Vista updates for .Net on this box, and no issues ... go figure.

thanx for your help, guys.

i think Microsoft may be trying to force me to go Linux Friendly.
:thud:

1, i had XP updates set to download but "ask before they install"
i simply clicked for the installation to not complete.
worked for many hours- then, when i had an ext HD plugged in, i noticed Win was writing the update files there.
Unusual-named folders like this, that appeared then self-deleted:
F:\6c9635e6ed16366864224b658b
F:\79120bc74ed6101974de
F:\bd5f2cd7386b7ffbfe8983f4bff9
(i recognized things like MS Removal Tool etc in some of the files i peeked in)
- NOW, it's asking me if i want to RESTART NOW or RESTART LATER.
a PAIN, since i thought it would behave itself.
hopefully, this will be ok.
*** no better way to control this? *** i thought i'd figured it out, but evidently not.
the microsoft update will not be denied!

2, win7 home computer.
got message re the win update, allowed it, after it completed i shut down computer. booted up again and... BSOD.
can't remember exact sequence of error messages, but i tried various things, and saw this quite a lot:
restart and select the proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device

earlier, i'd backed up things called BACKUP, SYSTEM REPAIR, SYSTEM RESTORE (i think) & also FACTORY STATE backup to several places.
when prompted, i told windows to back it all up to my ext HDs- but, found out now i can't boot from them. (Screen prompts told me that i would be able to, if i included System Repair- but it Lied!)
couldn't boot from "system repair" disk (DVD) either.
i COULD get the Factory State BU DVD disks to *SEEM* to work (A1 Recovery Burner may be a utility ASUS has).
4 disks, prompted to load them, one after the other.
But THEN- i was prompted to "insert my Windows OS disk"- which i DON'T HAVE- since that computer didn't come with them.
(i didn't insert the System Repair disk- should i have? __it's the One Thing i didn't try__)

tapped F2 to try and get computer to boot from USB thumb drive- couldn't manage it. found the screen, but none of the choices seemed appropriate.

by the way, this is the new ASUS G75 notebook- returned the unit to the store. they're usually awful in there, demanding customers pay re-stocking fees on bad merchandise, etc. THIS TIME they said they've had a lot of the ASUS G75 machines returned- they had two others returned this same DAY- one they can't get to stay in English. They keep re-setting it, but it keeps showing French! (LOL)

** Anyway. i got a replacement of the same model. ANYTHING hinky with it, it's going back and that's that.

i'm not sure whether this was a windows update issue, or a problem with the computer itself.

any help you can offer on stopping XP win Updates- or advice or ways to handle the Win7 problems, would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

PS. yes, Corrine- i restarted the win7 machine many times.
it never showed messages about installing "updates"- just all the other "Your Computer's Not Working- Ha Ha Ha!" ones.
i have .NET on my XP box- had what seemed like a serious problem with an update last month- but Microsoft fixed the thing after a ton of people complained on their forums.

If you wish to control windows updates just set it to notify you when available. It will then just show the yellow shield when they are issued. Its up to you if and when you download.
