virus removed but no internet

So I bought a computer at Best Buy like a few a years ago.  I had their warranty plan so I brought it in and they removed the viruses for me.  The problem is that now my laptop doesn't recognize the wireless adapter inside and when I try to update drivers/discover the adapter, I get nowhere.  Can someone help me because I have a feeling this is a residual effect of the virus removal and infection.  The help would be greatly appreciated and I was told to post here from a friend's son. Please help!

We will do our best to assist you.  However, in order to do so, please follow all instructions provided in the sequence given.  Do not install/re-install any programs or run any fixes or scanners that you have not been instructed to use.  This may cause conflicts with the tools being used in the cleanup process.   

If you have questions regarding any of the instructions or problems running any tools, please let us know.

First a question:  Did you return to Best Buy and ask them what they did and why the wireless adapter is no longer recognized?

Next, in order to see what is happening with your computer, we need additional information.  Please provide a copy of the logs in the Log Posting Instructions topic.

Hi, Looper.

All Best Buy did was back up your files and reinstall the OS.  They left you with critically outdated Java and Adobe Flash Player installed. 

1.  Do you have a paid license for Norton Security?  Is it current?  If not, please Download and run the Norton Removal Tool to uninstall your Norton product, turn on the Windows Firewall, and install the antivirus program you had before Best Buy got their hands on your computer or install Microsoft Security Essentials.

2.  Uninstall Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6.  If you don't play games, you likely don't need Java on your computer.  See Java, The Never-Ending Saga.  (If you decide to keep Java, get the latest version from here:  Java Version 7 Update 17 and expect an update next week, April 16, 2013.

3.  The current version of Adobe Flash Player 9 is 11.7.700.169, updated today.  Even if Google Chrome is your primary browser, you need to update the ActiveX version for IE9.  Windows XP, Vista and 7, Flash Player For Internet Explorer 7, 8, 9, 10:  http://download.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/licensing/win/install_flash_player_11_active_x.exe

4.  The HP Wireless application is shown as being in Start Up programs.  HP has a help topic here:  HP Wireless Networking Center - Troubleshoot your wireless network.  If you are uncomfortable with any part of it or it doesn't work, please provide the exact model of your HP laptop.

5.  You'll need to defrag your hard drive, but let's deal with the other issues first.

Sorry for the late response, but I uninstalled both the flash player and the Java.  Also I see the HP wireless link and everytime I click it to open it, it doesn't respond.  Nothing comes up when I click the link and oddly the switch on the side to toggle the wireless on and off has no effect also.  It still doesn't recognize any wireless networks. I can't put my finger on it at all.  The type of HP laptop I have is a Compaq Presario V6000
