Just received a call from a very kind gentleman, with a very heavy Indian accent,  working for Windows Technical Support, informing me that my computer has been reporting an infection for the last couple of weeks. He very kindly offered to help me clean the infection... :hysterical:

My response was immediate and  totally not printable. He just put the phone down! My wife, who overheard my response, said to me..."How can you talk like that to people??"...He!...He!... :tease:

What I find interesting is that the call came from number 02070976517. 020 is the prefix for a Greater London number. I tried to call it but as soon as the number is dialled, the line gets disconnected!
I have looked up the number and found this link...http://whocallsme.com/Phone-Number.aspx/02070976517

I find it strange that a call like that can appear to be coming from London. I assumed that they come from Asia and in this case my phone would have reported it as "International".

A brand new client called to have me come look at her computer that appeared to be a goner with all kinds of corruption on C: drive, AOL corrupted, and a whole cocktail of PUPS (Please Uninstall Programs Stat! ... yeah, I know it's supposed to be Potentially Unwanted Programs).

Got the computer working very well, ran chkdsk and it fixed a large passel of corrupted areas and removed all the PUPS I could find in Add and Remove and used RKill (it had to kill two programs), JRT, AdwCleaner, Malwarebytes Antimalware (MBAM), installed CCleaner, Spywareblaster as well, then uninstalled expired Norton Internet Security, installed lightweight AV MSE, got Windows updates, removed all plugins, setup PaleMoon Portable for emergencies), put on some fun games, and boy was that old XP computer working really well!

Then after talking to her about needing to get a new computer so we could get this one offline ASAP, she mentioned that she had a laptop that they couldn't get into. Turns out it was a very nice HP Windows 7 laptop and they were relegated to using expired XP because they couldn't get into the laptop.

Then I pulled the plug on the USB network device on the WinXP computer which she will now use for Word documents and games.

I used NTPassword disk to blank the Windows password so they could make use of their own computer. I did Windows Updates, removed expired security programs, and installed up to date MSE and other security programs; Malwarebytes Antimalware (MBAM), CCleaner, Spywareblaster. Ran JRT, AdwCleaner and then MBAM. Thankfully hardly any issues on the Windows 7 computer. Installed Google Chrome with Adblock Plus and WOT.

They will now use the Windows 7 laptop ONLY for Internet use. And the XP computer for offline tasks like games and Word documents.

Anyway, while I was working on these computers, the lady said that the day before we got together, they had received a call from a foreign guy claiming to be from "Windows" saying "Your computer is..." and she hung up on him.  Wise elderly woman!
