You are right about being careful when downloading.  When installing programs, whenever possible, locate the program/vendor home site rather than using one of the download sites.  Before installing a new program, create a fresh restore point.  That way, if things go south, you can restore your computer to the point prior to installation of the program.  It is also critical to read each screen when installing something.

Now, let's take care of the tools we used.

1.  Right-click JRT on your desktop and select Delete.  Then do the following to uninstall AdwCleaner:

2.  Double-click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool again.
  • Click on the Uninstall button.
  • Click Yes when asked are you sure you want to uninstall.
  • Both AdwCleaner.exe, its folder and all logs will be removed.
3.  Delete SecurityCheck from your desktop but please note that there have been major security updates since we started.  See the General Software News, Updates & Discussions forum for information on the latest updates for Oracle Java, Adobe Reader and Adobe Flash Player.

Please refer to the Safe Computing Practices and other recommendations in this updated copy of "So how did I get infected in the first place?".
