EBay issued a notice on its websites asking users to change their passwords, but took down the message a short time later without explanation.

Looks like the warning is back now for real... perhaps the appearance/disappearance was the result of a slightly premature posting (???)

eBay is asking all users to change their passwords because of a cyberattack.

It says that the attack compromised passwords and other nonfinancial data...

Beginning later today, eBay users will be notified via email, site communications and other marketing channels to change their password. In addition to asking users to change their eBay password, the company said it also is encouraging any eBay user who utilized the same password on other sites to change those passwords, too.

It seems this breach was discovered several months ago.

One has to wonder if information is already out there being used.   I would feel a lot better if they just notified people when they find stuff like this, instead of waiting for weeks/months of damage control meetings before coming out with the news.

Well, I changed my password back then, but did it again today as well. Just to be safe.  :mitch:

It's is a bit late that eBay tells their costumers that one of their databases had been hacked between late February and early March.
If you have an eBay account it is a good idea if you change your password and so.

eBay - Change your passwords - FCS Blog:

QuoteeBay Inc. To Ask eBay Users To Change Passwords

Earlier today eBay Inc. announced it is aware of unauthorized access to eBay systems that may have exposed some customer information. There is no evidence that financial data was compromised and there is no evidence that PayPal or our customers have been affected by the unauthorized access to eBay systems. We are working with law enforcement and leading security experts to aggressively investigate the matter.

As a precaution, we will be asking all eBay users (both buyers and sellers) to change their passwords later today. As a global marketplace, nothing is more important to eBay than the security and trust of our customers. We regret any inconvenience or concern that this situation may cause you.  We know our customers and partners have high expectations of us, and we are committed to ensuring a safe and secure online experience for you on any connected device.
