Recently, I opened up my Internet Explorer, and instead of my usual homepage, this address is coming up as my homepage about:blank then immediately changes to http://www.systemupdates.net/ ( I would advise to not clicking on it, unless you can fix any problems it might cause).  All attempts to revert my homepage to what it used to be have failed, it always goes back to this page.  I've tried many adware/spyware/virus detection programs, and hijack shredders (from trendmicro) and It's still holding off my original homepage.  Here is my HJT log, as per your instructions.

I am also encountering other problems, but I will hold off on those while you get a look at this, and hopefully any fixes you have may solve those as well, as they all started happening at the same time.

I'm new to this forum, and only happened upon it by chance, but after reading some of the information already posted, it sounds like you guys are very knowledgable and very helpful.  Thanks in advance.

Die Hard

Calvin, hello and welcome

You might want to print those instructions,or copy them to a notepad sheet and save it to your desktop when we are going to work without internet connection during the cleaning procedure.

1. Download smitRem.exe©noahdfear and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.
Do not use it yet

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please go here and download Ewido Security Suit:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

A quick guide is found here:
http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/Tutorials/ewidoQuickGuide.pdf

  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
    Ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed ,close the program for now

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:[list=1]
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode
    .
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://qus8.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-qus8.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://yahoo.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = :0
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) -  - (no file)
O2 - BHO: HomepageBHO - {4da4616d-7e6e-4fd9-a2d5-b6c535733e22} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp96F0.tmp
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)

Close HiJackThis.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Run Ewido:

  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.

On the first alert, a window will open prompting you to take action. Checkmark "Remove" and "Perform action on all detections".
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
    Now close ewido security suite.

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut.
    - Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
    - A new window will open...click the Check Now button
    - Enter your Country
    - Enter your State/Province
    - Enter your e-mail address and click send
    - Select either Home User or Company
    - Click the big Scan Now button
    - If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
    - It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
    - When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
    - When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of smitfiles.txt and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

    regards

Going to go ahead and do as you listed.  I will post what you requested once all is done.  Thanks again.

Well after all the scans etc, I no longer have any popups or notices of "adware present" in my windows task bar.  I also have reset my homepage, and it is staying.  It is no longer reverting to the wrong address.

Here are my logs as requested:

Thank you very much for your help.  I've recommended this site to many of my friends if they have any future problems with this type of thing.  It seems everything is running properly.  I have been in normal mode now for about 4 hours, and have had no popups, banner adds, or any other problems.  Thanks again!!!!!!
