It's a dreaded day for many Internet companies: On June 30, an extra second will be added to the clock, creating the potential to wreak havoc on computer systems not equipped to handle the change.

The International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems (IERS) announced an extra second will be added at the end of June to account for a discrepancy between Earth's rotation and the atomic clock.

At least we won't have to turn our clocks back 3601 seconds in the fall.

Here's how some of the major players are treating the 1 second addition:  June 30 Leap Second Worries Markets, Internet : GPS World.

M3 Sweatt is my source for time changes that are computer-related.  He pointed me to his article from January of this year:  The story around Leap Seconds and Windows: It's likely not Y2K - Satisfy Me - Site Home - MSDN Blogs.

In Part two of the story around Leap Seconds and Windows: #NotY2K - Satisfy Me - Site Home - MSDN Blogs, M3 Sweatt quotes KB article 909614:

Quoteafter the leap second occurs, the NTP client that is running Windows Time service is one second faster than the actual time. This time difference is resolved at the next time synchronization.

So, if Internet Time for your computer is set to time.windows.com, it will automatically add the extra second at the next sync.

A little more information from M3 Sweatt, Another look at the coming 2015 leap second - Satisfy Me - Site Home - MSDN Blogs.  All we really need to do is make sure our computers are synced with time.windows.com.

About an hour and 15 before it happens.

23:59:58 --> 23:59:59 --> 23:59:60 --> 0:00:00 UTC.

which for here in Seattle is 4:59 and 60 seconds Pacific Daylight Time.

So far, the world as we know it has not ended.

M3 posted another update on his site yesterday.  Apparently, he's still getting lots of questions.

So, what is everyone doing with that extra second today?

Maybe the leap second is why so many people are running into a problem with Build 10158 sitting at "Downloading updates 0%" for an extended period of time.  After about 40 minutes, I restarted, a message on Windows Update indicated that updates failed to install and "fbl_impressive Professional 10159 - Error 0x4001e".  Clicked try again and it started downloading and installed just fine.  Others have reported the same thing.
