When to get the new Edge browser

I'm on 1909 Windows 10, and using the legacy Edge browser.

I was reading about problems people were having when the new chromium based Edge is installed during a Windows update.  I think the problems were happening to those that already have or were getting the 2004 Windows  version.  The discussion said the problems could be avoided if Edge was installed manually and not through the update.

My question is, would it be a good idea I download the new Edge and install it now before the 2004 Windows is delivered to my machine even though I'm not on 2004 yet?

The number of people having problems is a very tiny number. They just make a lot of noise that gets amplified over and over by parrots and some in the IT press who love to point out and exaggerate Microsoft problems.

Microsoft knows that the vast majority of the 1 billion+ W10 users did not manually upgrade to the new Edge. And so they have taken great effort to ensure the 2004 upgrade goes smoothly.

Of course we have to remember that each and every one of those 1 billion+ W10 systems became a unique computer within the first couple minutes of its very first boot. This is due to users setting up their unique user accounts, networking, security, installed apps, attached devices, personalizations, etc. So there will be some users who have problems. But typically, the best odds come by just letting Windows manage things (that is, leave the defaults alone!). I did and all my systems upgraded just fine. The developers at Microsoft really are some of the sharpest programmers on the planet (can't say the same for the marketing weenies and some of the execs, but that's for another discussion).

Pete!

After I got Win 10 v 2004 (Saturday 8/15), and its updates (Sunday 8/16), I was very surprised to see I still had "legacy" Edge.
Since I usually use Firefox, I didn't worry about it.

Yesterday (Monday 8/17), I got a symbol in the "hidden icons" indicating there was an update awaiting a reboot.
It was "new" Edge.

I installed the new Edge a couple of months before I was offered the 2004 update.  There were no problems with the installation, nor with it working as expected after the 2004 process (nor with the 2004 installation for that matter).

"Good idea" ... that's rather subjective.  If you plan to use the new Edge, go ahead and install it now.  If you don't, there's no harm in waiting until 2004 pushes it out to you.

Thanks for the input, everyone.   I've been using Edge more and more. Its just faster than everything else and has had less problems. Oddly, I'm not even missing my extensions. The only one I have installed is Ghostery.

But since its working fine, there seems to be  no good  reason to change it yet.  I think I'll just let the natural progression of updates take its course.

Your computer, your choice. However I would be remiss in not asking ... if you are
Quoteusing Edge more and more
why wouldn't you want to update to the new and improved version sooner rather than later?

I guess because normally, I go by the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" philosophy.

Is it really better?  In my FireFox experience,  all the layers of "improvements" over the years resulted in a bloated, tubby engine that uses a lot of resources.

Yes, it is much better, with many new features, polished appearance and it's fast, secure and nice.

"if it ain't broke, don't fix it" philosophy doesn't applies here. It's something different and new, not just an update or an improvement of the old one. Only the name is the same. It could be something different.

Still using the old one? Still have doubts? Still asking?

I took the excellent advice given and downloaded and installed the new Edge.

Upgrade went seamlessly,  seems to have preserved all important settings and even cookies, so that's great.   I haven't noticed any problems yet, but still exploring.
