I'm wondering if this is happening "in general" (i.e., simply by the presence of CCleaner on one's system)...
or if it's being catalyzed by the presence of avast antivirus???

Put more simply, I'm interested in hearing if this CCleaner update has occurred for anyone who is NOT using avast?

The above BC article was updated with a response from an Avast spokesperson.

Quote"We introduced a critical update feature in CCleaner version v5.36. The critical update is designed to protect our users against security threats and to provision critical software updates to avoid scenarios such as loss of data or severe software/hardware conflicts. This is different from the automatic updater that CCleaner Professional users can opt out of (automatic updates is not currently a CCleaner Free feature).

The response includes the explanations on why they determined it a critical update.  Additionally, with regard to privacy, the Avast spokesperson said,

QuoteTo answer your final question, during this update privacy settings were not restored to default. Over the course of the last few months, due to GDPR requirements and as a result of user feedback, privacy-related requirements have changed. As a result, the options available have been updated to reflect current legislative and user needs.

This is odd because I am not seeing this (I do not have Avast).

I manually upgraded this system to 5.46 a couple days ago and the first thing I did was check to make sure my privacy settings were not reset again. They were not! :)

I just now checked 2 other computers that I had sitting at 5.44. They are both still at 5.44. So no problems there either.

Is it still safe to use Slim version?  Those articles about it installing Avast with no opt out is disturbing. I don't want it forcing any other stuff on me.

Corrine

The Slim build does not include the pre-checked options.  That said, when installing any software or update, it is always wise to carefully watch each screen presented.

Beware: CCleaner may install CCleaner Browser and remap file associations

From the referenced ghacks article:

QuoteCCleaner users who upgrade the software or install it anew using the full installer may get these offers.
(Bold added)

Just one more reason to wait for the Slim Build!

CCleaner v5.74.8184 released 09 Nov

go for the SLIM build

Two important notes:

1)  Updates to CCleaner will now be applied automatically in CCleaner Free.  You can review your Update Preferences in the 'Options' → 'Updates' menu.
If automatic updates are enabled, CCleaner will run in the background and check for them twice daily (if you run CCleaner it will always check for an update first).

2)  Smart Cleaning is enabled by default and runs as a background process.  It can be controlled in the Options tab.  If Smart Cleaning is disabled, the background process will close and will not run when you next start Windows.

CCleaner v5.74.8198 (11 Nov 2020)

Note, this version received a small patch update (v5.74.8198) to fix a settings bug. This patch update will be applied automatically unless automatic updates have been disabled.

winchester73

I had un-ticked the automatic update box previously, but was offered this update when I launched CCleaner just now.
