1) are there any FREE apps that will open .gz files -- and WON'T pelt me with tons of ads and adware...?

2) if NOT, are there are reasonably priced apps that will do this, and be easy-to-use, compatible with everything else, etc?

* i need to access some website stats log files, and they're compressed with that .gz extension.

want something lean, simple and quick, so i can BLAZE
:boat3:

and not
:sinking:

babyoh,

  Have a look - http://www.gzip.org/

P.S. Have never had the need to open this kind of file.  :)

mitch

it's usually a linux zipped file
so don't know what it will be when unzipped, but could be linux (unix) files

babyoh

i downloaded 7-ZIP

when i RIGHT-CLICK - OPEN WITH 7ZIP, the files just FLASHES black on the screen for a fraction of a second

RIGHT-CLICK - 7zip - OPEN ARCHIVE
gets me INSIDE 7zip. it gives me my file WITHOUT the .gz extension -- but OPEN, just creates that Black Screen Flash.

Right-Click - EDIT gives me the info I WANT, but it's all mashed together (in NOTEPAD), with single spaces - no tabs, or line breaks.

is there some trick or command i can use, to make it more readable?
...it's alot of information.

i have FILE SIZE 232 K, PACKED size 14K, HOST OS- Unix,  CRC: 815B6415

* after i "EXTRACTED" the file, it's icon changed from "UNKNOWN" to a WORDPAD icon, but it still had the .GZ extension.

if i can't figure out anything else, i'm going to save it as a NOTEPAD file.
but it sure is going to be difficult to READ...

i figured out a little more since my last post.
- i can get at the RAW DATA in the .gz file --under TYPE it shows as MS-DOS APPLICATION (i can get it under EDIT, into a .txt NOTEPAD file)

i need:
- some way to preserve or create line breaks, maybe add color to some pieces of text, etc. (since it's all smashed together now)

* i just got NOTEPAD2, which allows me to highlight and organize text as programming source code (it has built-in defaults for HTML, javascript etc).

it would be PERFECT, except it's geared for PROGRAMMING, not stats (for example, it'll highlight COMMENT TAGS  in source, but not the things i need for it to)

anyway -- i need to do something similar but with a STATS LOG FILE.

when i googled, i only found apps that would DECREASE the amount of info (to make it more "understandable") - like AWSTATS

* so... if anybody happens to know of a way to take my data and Put In BREAKS, COLORS and FORMATTING and so forth.

(hope i made this clear)

- and THANKS tarnak and mitch, for your help
