nice pc but cant get the password

hi to all,
a friend of mine buys pc's at police auctions and i clean them up for him to sell. we have an xp home that is password protected and of course we will never figure out the password. one other time we had this and he took it into a tech and they used a software prog and found the passwprd. it cost him $$$ to have it done so this time i thought i would ask the knowledgable people here if anyone knows of any free software i could use to get the password or does anyone know another way to get it. ive tried using safe mode to establish an admin account but as you probably know i couldnt do that. so we're stuck with a very nice pc but no way to get to the desktop. any help would be greatly appreciated.

thank you for the links. my friend buys these puters, i clean them up and he sells them at a decent price to people that cant afford the price of a new off the shelf pc. we've helped many people this way and it has allowed me to learn many ways to clean up the nasties over the last 3 yrs.
i browsed the links and im sure the answer is there. thank you again :thumbsup:

im sorry but after going over the info in the links im confused :oops:
what im looking for is a tool that will let me find the logon password in xp/2000 without creating a partition or destroying data. so much to choose from and i see something about linux being used also?? sorry but im totally lost on this one. anymore specific help would be appreciated by this newbie.

I've seen something posted at Freedomlist but didn't find it when searching this a.m. so located the site above.  It sounded to me that you were looking for something like the software described here:  http://www.petri.co.il/forgot_administrator_password.htm#20

Originally I was thinking of Belarc Advisor but as I recall that shows SN's not passwords.

Hi eagle,

I'm rather confident that the Offline NT Password & Registry Editor will help you in those situations.
It's been tried out by lots of users in Scandinavia and they recommend it with words like "It's a Golden Nugget".
No risks of spyware or malware bundled either... 8)
