Thank you to all of those who have made each and every one of the United States' 231 "Fourth of Julys" possible.

Happy birthday, America!

231 years ago, 56 patriots declared the United States a free county by signing the Declaration of Independence, a document that proclaimed the American people should not be ruled by the government, but rather that the American people should rule government.

As Thomas Jefferson stated when he put pen to paper:

"Prudence, indeed, will dictate that governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shown, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed.  But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security."

... a reminder that it is the responsibility of those who have the ability to stand up when injustice and oppression are present.  Along with the freedoms come responsibilities ...  to one another, to our communities, to our nation and the entire world.

I hope this 4th of July serves as a reminder of those responsibilities.
