Well the thing is, I need it on a disc, as I'm unable to download.  I'm assuming the makers of freeware programs are not going to offer their product on disc, except maybe for a donation.  But, maybe this is an "ass-u-me" scenario, and I will be able to find a freeware zip opener on disc without much searching???  Still though, I would want to cover their mailing cost....

OH!!!  Unless I can Run it from the download site, instead of Save it????  .....not sure about that, but I'll look into it asap.

Hi Brynn,

Please let me know if you received my PM.  Thanks.

Brynn,

As far as I know, the only difference between Run and Save, is Run simply downloads it to the Temp folder, and runs it as soon as it is downloaded. Save, simply downloads it to your own specified folder where you'll need to launch it manually. Advantage with Save being it isn't going to get wiped out by a Temporary Folder cleanup.
Beta. Software undergoes beta testing shortly before it's released. Beta is Latin for 'still doesn't work.'

Yes, that's right.  When a file is downloaded, it goes into the Temporary Internet Files area.  Upon download compltion, if Run was selected, then it executes from that location.  If Save was selected, then the file is copied from the Temporary Internet Files area to the location specified in the Save dialog box.

Some of us have discussed this thread in the IRC Chat room, and I've been asked a few times if I have any ideas to add.  The good news is what I've been thinking to try was already suggested before I hopped in to reply to the thread. :)  But now I'm not sure what else to try, and given the oddness of what's going on, I'm yielding to Microsoft Product Support Services to see how they can help.  I'm talking with Brynn via PM to set up a support incident.  (Sorry, I don't have an infinite supply of these.  Any requests to open one up for anyone else will be answered with an automatic, "No.")

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, please continue to post them.  I'd love to see this resolved, and I'm sure I share the same thought with many others when I say I'm interested in finding out what solves this.  "I don't know.  It just started working!" is ok, too.

Thanks,

Aaron

Aaron, I cannot thank you enough for your kindness and generosity.

I guess I did not realize this problem was such a puzzle.  As a kind of an inveterate newbie (or noob, as the kids say, these days ), I run into this kind of thing all the time.  And it always turns out to be some setting which I've inadvertantly tweaked.  But not this time, it seems.

Don't worry, I certainly will post any solution we come up with.

Thank you ALL for your interest in this problem, and your time and attention in replying.  LandzDown is my Hero Forum!!

Hi Folks,
As promised, here's an update on this issue.  Well 1st, to prevent Aaron from getting inundated with requests for a free support incident, we found out that MS offers everyone 2 free support incidents, before being asked for payment.  That goes for XP Home and Pro, but I don't know if it's 2 free incidents ever, or yearly, or what.  I had no idea MS offered free tech support

So MS Technical Support came to the same conclusion as SpyDie and others here at Lzd.  Way to go guys!  This user account has somehow become corrupted.  MS recommended creating a new user account and walked me through transferring all my files to the new account.  But this account contains a great deal of personalized display and other settings which will take me literally hours to reset in the new account.  To be honest, I think I would rather just use the new account for downloading.  I'm not doing so much downloading that would make it inconvenient.  And that's where things stand at this moment.  I don't know, maybe I will work on all those settings little by little, and eventually move to the new account....we'll see....

I have to say, though, that I find it quite frustrating, that the exact cause of the problem (exactly which files or components are corrupted) can't be identified.  I mean, if there is no solution to any given problem, I can handle that (witness my health -- no cure).  But it's hard for me to believe that no one can figure out what's causing this problem.

For this reason, I'm thinking of posting this problem in another support forum.  I have not definitely decided to, but if I do, I'll post a link in this thread, should anyone want to follow the saga  If I do decide to post elsewhere, this should not in any way be interpretted as my dissatisfaction with LzD members, or with MS Technical Support.  In my opinion, you have all given me excellent advice and support, and I could not ask for better.  LzD is still my Hero Forum!  If I do, it will be because I want to present this problem to more people, in hopes there be someone "out there" who can point to exactly what is corrupt about this user account.

And of course, if anyone here at LzD comes up with something, I will continue to monitor this thread.  Please feel free to post!

So finally, one last time, I want to say:

[bgcolor=#0000ff]THANK YOU!     THANK YOU!     THANK YOU!     THANK YOU!     THANK YOU!     THANK YOU!
Thanks to everyone who posted, thanks for the time some of you spent discussing and working on the problem offline from LzD.  And especially thanks to Aaron for offering me the MS support incident!  You guys are THE BEST!!!
