I first became aware of the problem when AOL started telling me it had found and blocked Darksma.  After some researching, I downloaded and ran Vundofix.  It found, but was unable to remove, c:\windows\system32\geebcaw.dll.

I ran Spybot S&D and it found:

1. DriveCleaner 2006: Clas ID (Registry key) HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\InprocServer32
2. Virtumonde: Library(File) C:\WINDOWS\system32\jcmdlv.dll
3. Virtumonde: Settings (Registry key) HKEY_LOCAL-MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dlnf
4. Virtumonde: Settings (Registry key) HKEY_LOCAL-MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DnngCon

While Spybot is able to fix all except the Libray(File) C:\WINDOWS\system32\jcmdlv.dll, they seem to replicate themselves are found again on the next scan.

I ran a scan with AVG and it found and quarantined the following, but they also reappeared on the next scan.

WINDOWS\system32\wnstscc.exe -> Trojan.Small
WINDOWS\run2.exe -> Downloader.PurityScan.dc

I am at a loss on how fix this.  I have started receiving popups for spyware.

I am running Windows XP, SP2.

Here is my HJT log and thank you for any help you can provide!!

Corrine

Hi, NanaVic.  Welcome to LandzDown Forum.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe (Mirror location:  http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe )
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running as that may cause it to stall.

Please also post a fresh HijackThis log.

Thanks.

Hi, NanaVic.

I am about to start work so will not be able to review your log at this time and advise further cleanup.  In the meantime, however, is there a reason you haven't upgraded to IE7?  I would also hesitate to add anything to the Trusted Zone with such complete freedom:  O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.turbotax.com.  The asterisk means that any web page preceding .turbotax.com is trusted.

BTW, is your machine running better?

Thank you and yes, the machine is running much better. The only reason I haven't upgraded is I wasn't aware there was one.  Guilty of not keeping up with some things.  Will remove TurboTax from trusted zone.  I really appreciate all the help - Thank you!!

Paddy

Some reading for you as to why you should upgrade to IE 7

Also make sure you are up to-date with your Microsoft up dates .

Also your Adobe Reader is way out of date >>> C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Reader\

Adobe Reader 8.1>> is the new one

NanaVic,
To help you keep up with all your program updates may I recommenfd that you use Secunia Software Inspector.
QuoteThe Secunia Software Inspector:
* Detects insecure versions of applications installed
* Verifies that all Microsoft patches are applied
* Assists you in updating your system and applications
* Runs through your browser. No installation or download is required

A: It does seem to for a few hours at least.

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running.  Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Since search results were rather slim, if you don't know what the following is, I suggest remove it:  C:\Program Files\Miuchiz.  Be sure hidden files are showing and remove in safe mode.

To enable the viewing of Hidden files in XP, follow these steps:

   1. Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
   2. Double-click on the My Computer icon.
   3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
   4. After the new window appears select the View tab.
   5. Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
   6. Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
   7. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
   8. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
   9. Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
  10. Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

I agree completely with the recommendations of numbnuts & GR@PH;<'S, especially Secunia Software Inspector.  Since you didn't know about IE7, that implies that you have not been getting Microsoft Updates for many, many months.  I just looked it up and see that Microsoft released IE7 on October 18, 2006.  That is a mighty long time not to be getting updates.  There have been quite a few critical issues that Microsoft has addressed during this time.  Do you have automatic updates turned off?

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune from http://www.atribune.org/content/view/40/2/ .  Save it to your Desktop.

Run ATF Cleaner

  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
  • Shutdown/restart the computer.
Now scan again with HijackThis, post the log as a reply and let us know if your computer still seems to be ok.

Thanks.

Thank you everyone for the advice and assistance.  I'm still in the process of updating everything you identified (dial up is a slow process) but wanted to go ahead and post the most recent HJT because the main issues I was having seem to have been resolved.  How is it looking now?

Hi, NanaVic.  Great job!!!

For additional information on protecting your PC, please see Tony Klein's "So how did I get infected in the first place?" for important tips on how to prevent future infections.  There is also a lot of helpful information in "Mitch's Good Stuff" linked from here.

Install and update SpywareBlaster to prevent the installation of spyware and other potentially unwanted software.  You can click "Notify" on this thread to receive email notices of SpywareBlaster updates:  http://www.landzdown.com/index.php?topic=288.0

I really like WinPatrol, which includes the features described here.
